Tonight is the night when New Line Cinema, the makers of Rendition, commemorates 40 years of moviemaking with a black-tie and posh frock gala at the Lincoln Center in NYC. The evening will be hosted by the chairmen and CEOs of New Line, Bob Shaye and Michael Lynne, and, judging by the price tickets are going for on the internet, it should be some night. The event was announced in May and we've heard almost nothing about it since. At the time it was indicated that Jake Gyllenhaal and Reese Witherspoon would be there among the stars. But who can say - I suppose there is nothing for it but to wait and see.
A week today, Jake will be on Tonight with Jonathan Ross. A friend rang the production company and was told that they were postponing the usual Thursday recording of the show until the Friday, on account of Jake - make of this what you will. Jake's schedule is getting heavier by the day - not to mention a healthily increasing accrual of airmiles. As requested, I will put up a schedule over the weekend and, if anyone hears of any new TV or radio, whether in the UK or US, it would be great to hear of it. So everyone keep your eyes and ears open - we don't want to mis a thing. At the moment, we have Letterman, Conan, Regis and Jon Stewart in NYC and, presumably in LA, Ellen.
2005 Radio 4 interview with Jake (audio file)
When I was searching around this evening to see if I could come across clues to any other UK appearance by Jake, I found an old Radio 4 interview in which Francine Stock talked with Jake about his contrasting roles in Brokeback Mountain and Jarhead. It took a few goes to get the file to play, but when it did, and once I got over my annoyance at the mispronunciation of Jake's name, Jake exhibits some apprehension about how Brokeback will be received by wetsern fans and filmgoers in general. This is before the acclaim of the Oscars - at this stage, Jake says that 'time will tell how people will respond' to the turning of these iconic cowboy figures on their head. 'I'm not going to show myself in any cowboy bar soon' and, he adds, neither will Heath. Jake even says that he is expecting protests, despite the film being 'very conventional' on many levels.
It's easy to forget, now that Brokeback Mountain is so critically acclaimed - time has indeed shown how people have responded - that this was new territory, both for a film and for a young actor.
Press warned not to salivate or sigh too much
So while we're thinking of Jake in London and Jake being acclaimed for his Jack Twist, we should remember the BAFTAs 2006 and Jake's well-deserved reward. Here is an anecdote about that night by a Guardian reporter: 'There was no doubting the press pack's favourite winner of the night - Brokeback Mountain star Jake Gyllenhaal. A warning "not to salivate or sigh too much" when he came in the press room went largely unheeded, and he was greeted with whooping and cheering when he returned with co-star Heath Ledger and director Ang Lee. Gyllenhaal turned the table on the hacks with a question of his own. "I have a question for the radio people," he announced. "I was looking for a little hip hop in the car [on the way to the awards] and I could not find any." Well, even a Hollywood star's gotta relax those nerves somehow. A chap from Radio 1 suggested he try his station on a Friday night. Not much help on a Sunday though, is it?'
And finally...
... Variety interviews young actor Josh Hutcherson. When asked who his role model is, Josh replies 'Jake Gyllenhaal. He chose projects not based on potential box office but for the most diverse characters and stories. That's how I want to go about my career.'

I don't know why it always tickles me so to read things like this. I guess it's that I imagine people in that business get exposed to just about every "dreamy" celebrity there is, and yet Jake has his undeniable, overpowering effect on them, too. Thanks for finding these tidbits for us, once again! Here's hoping Jake is in New York this very moment, getting dressed to kill.
Hi Cherita - I couldn't agree with you more! I love things like this too - the idea of warning the press not to swoon and sigh over Jake :) He has such charisma, it can't be resisted. It would be so good if we wake up to some stunning pictures tomorrow.
Thank you so much for that Radio4 interview:) I love it!!! Jake has such a beautiful soothing voice...I don't always appreciate that in his TV interviews cos his gorgeousness makes it almost impossible to concentrate on anything else but when his face isn't there to distract me I get goosebumps listening to him *swoon* I feel so peaceful now I cwn't even be bothered to rant about yet another presenter mispronouncing his name ;)
Hi Twisted Logic! I'm so glad you liked the interview - I'd never heard it before either. I've not managed to get the second half to work yet but hopefully tomorrow. Jake's voice is wonderfully calming - I could listen to it all night.
I didn't realise there was a second half! I just listened up to 11 minutes and then it seemed like that was the end of Jake's bit so I stopped it.Do you know where the second part starts?
It's great finding new old Jake stuff, isn't it? I loved listening to him talking about BBM before it all happened. I'd love to see someone ask him about it in one of the upcoming interviews (Are you listening, Jonathan Ross?) I'd love to know what Jake's perspective on BBM is now, almost two years since its release, in terms of its impact on people and on his own career. JR went into quite a bit of detail with Jamie Foxx last week about Ray, so I hope he'll do the same with Jake and BBM.
Just think this time next week we'll all be sitting in front of our TVs drooling for England:D
I can't wait!!!
Yes, thanks for "tidbits" - you find the tasty ones, and pictures that are just right. I love looking backwards - Jake worried about messing with the western myth! he had no idea!
Im watching Grease, with commentary; another charismatic figure breaking boundaries - you can't take your eyes off the young John Travolta. And he was not a beauty, like Jake.
everybody settles down, after awhile, I guess. or not. (but how much csn our poor hearts take?) Jake talking about historical perspective: I dont think we yet understand the affect of BBMt in breaking stereotypes.
And as for the affect of Jake - it seems to be on-going!
(Unlike the autumn in New England when you KNOW when the color has HITS ITS PEAK - )
Hey Twisted Logic - well, the BBM interview lasts about 5 minutes and then she launches into Jarhead but I've not heard that bit yet, you have to keep replaying it and it was driving Mr WDW mad! So I'll have a go tomorrow.
I can' believe that this time next week I'll be sitting here watching Jake on JR - it should be so funny, words defy me.
Thanks Positively Pia - I do love these little bits and pieces. I found it quite moving listening to Jake worried about how his film would be received. It made me realise how brave Jake had been to take it on. It's easy with hindsight to go on about how extraordinary BBM is, but then, there would have been so much uncertainty.
I was lucky enough to experience autumnal New England once - how beautiful :)
Thanks WDW:) It works fine for me though. Hope you get it to play soon:)
I wonder if Jake will be the first guest to appear, or will JR tease and torment us (like some people I could mention not unrelated to his show!) by making us wait til the end (and making us watch Jordan and Peter in the process). The wait is killing me already!!
Pia, I love Grease! And yes, John Travolta is spellbinding in it. But I have to say, whenever I hear Summer Loving these days it just reminds me of Ennis and Jack's summer on BBM:)
Thanks Twisted Logic - hopefully it'll work tomorrow for me:) I bet Jake's on LAST next week!
JR just announced "Hollywood heartthrob Jake Gyllenhaal" on next week's show!!! It's totally official now!!
TL (tender, loving?) yes nothing can compare with the BBMt summer - nothing! -
Hey Pia! Yes,I can be, most of the time;)
Brokeback Mountain, 1963 is THE summer of love for me now. That line "met a boy cute as can be" always makes me think of blue eyes looking out from under a black cowboy hat:) Oh, I need a BBM fix now!!
^^I feel the same way, TL; when I listened to that old interview, and heard the clips from Brokeback. I'm always awed by just how moving that film was.
Thanks for that interview, WDW, I hadn't heard it before either. Despite the repeated misproununciation of Gyllenhaal by the interview, I thought he had some very thoughtful responses to her questions, especially as concerns Jarhead. And you're right, he does have a very calm (and calming) voice, I love to listen to it too. :)
^^interviewer, sorry
If Jake and Heath turned out to be an item, that would be really OK.
OMG -- thanks for that interview, WDW. One of the best I've seen/heard regarding both films. Thoughtful questions AND answers -- quite refreshing. Jake was just 24 then? Wow.
Thanks for the update. You have such good information.
I'm glad jake is going to be on Ellen. They have a good rapport and I love the thing where he calls her and plays the harmonica and asks her out.He has the bedroom voice going.
Thannks for doing WDW, I love it. Barbara
I remember reading the precis of the Brokeback story and thinking "I have to see that film!",before I had ever laid eyes on Jake or Heath. Then I heard that "The Film Programme" on Radio 4 would be interviewing the mispronounced Jake Gyllenhaal and tuned in to that interview when it initially went out.
I was so bowled over by the intellingence, thoughtfulness, charm and good humour of this young man talking to Francine Stock, quite apart from being totally floored by the velvet voice. I think it was right there that I began to fall for that very special 24 year old as he was then, sweet and savvy beyond his years.
I began to rabidly collect magazines which made mention of Jake,Heath and Brokeback and showed pictures proving that the beauty of the voice was easily matched by the man himself.
By the time I'd seen "Brokeback" for the first time,in fact well before the film had finished breaking my heart for the first time of many,I had completely fallen for Jake Gyllenhaal and the rest,as they say,is history.
Thanks so much for linking back to this lovely interview,WDW,and bringing back such special memories for me.
However,I'm going to have to have a word with young Mr.Gyllenhaal if he continues to be so hooked on Hip-Hop. Ok there are some hip-hop and rap(I often spell it with a silent C)tracks that I find utterly brilliant but as a genre in general? Oh perleeze! How am I going to continue my self-delusion that this young film icon, who spent his formative/teenage years in California is 100% compatible with this married woman of 47 from Central England if he persists with such aberrations?
But seriously, even Jake's musical taste seems to be a plus-point about the bloke because it would appear to be as varied and complex as he is.
Gotta go now, have a great Saturday folks, hope to see you later,
Yours,totally smitten...
If he's recording at the BBC on a Friday, there's an outside chance he may turn up on Radio 5 that afternoon (Friday has movie reviews from Mark Kermode).
Also, if you don't get to see Jonathan Ross on Friday, the BBC have got pretty good at putting clips on Youtube and making shows available on their own website for a week or so afterwards.
Morning everyone! I'm so ready for an entirely lazy weekend devoted to nothing but Jaking. I'm going to be around a lot so come and chat with me...
I saw JR last night Twisted Logic and heard his reference to 'Hollywood heartthrob Jake Gyllenhaal' - Mr WDW looked at me as if to say 'I dare you to whoop', so I did. Very exciting!
1963 is a year I need to be reacquainted with this evening...
Hi Marina - I'm so glad you liked the interview. I've not got the Jarhead part to work for me yet, hopefully it will today.
Beckela - I culd listen to Jake talk about Brokeback and any of his films all day. Not only do I like what he says, I love how he says it.
Barbara - Thanks :) I loved it when Jake called Ellen up - I just have to wonder what he's going to do this time - I suspect something will be planned.
Hey Drive By Nadine - that is so cool that this interview was one of the hooks that caught you and that it's brought back some special memories for you. That means a lot. And so you fell for Jake's voice first! Then discovering that the face matched.
Please don't have words with Mr G about his hip hop tastes though (love the 'rap' with a silent 'c'!!) - I'm a bit of a fan of it myself. It always amazes me that my eclectic and bizarre music tastes have found their match in Jake's. Hence a week listening to Kanye West and Arcade Fire!
Hi bmg - thanks for that tip. I've been having a quick search around this morning and I've found that he's NOT on Parkinson that weekend and I can't see reference to him on T4 as yet. JR is repeated late Saturday night I think, at midnight. I need to find a radio schedule.
Hi WDW!
I just noticed your beautiful and colorful "shedule" of Jake appearances comoing up. Thank you, thank you! ;)
I forgot to mention how much I love that last pic with Heath and Jake together - Heath looks so much like Ennis there. :)
Hi Marina - I hope the schedule's a help and it can be added to/amended anytime. Note the Today Show is a new addition :)
It looks like a busy day for our darling on the 16th - 3 shows scheduled for that day! I can hardly wait to enjoy. There are some more press conference pics on IHJ that are just heavenly, btw. *sigh*
You'll love the part of the interview where he speaks about Jarhead. I wish that more of his thoughts had been made public. I recall something he received a lot of flak for, which could have been taken out of context and most likely was, in the press, when his other comments, such as these, were never mentioned. I did read the book, so his comments in the interview I understood. Comments such as just because they were not at war, didn't mean there wasn't one going on internally. I wish more people would think of what war is like from the soldier's point of view, especially those who send them. If you watched Ken Burns' latest program at all, it's literally to tough to take. I could only watch it in small bits, with breaks in between. It's told from the POVs of the soldiers and families, not just a dispassionate account of battles of WWII. I loved Jake's comments; and I was very moved by Tony's book.
^^Forgot to add - in reading Jake's interview with David Fincher - I was happy to see that the context of the remarks was made quite clear, with notatino made as to whether or not a comment was made sarcastically or laughing, etc. The QC article left a lot to interpretation, I thought.
Oh and if you do watch Ken Burn's wonderful documentary, don't miss the FUBAR episode (soldier's own jargon and acronymn for Effed Up Beyond All Recognition). Tells it like it was for them, with no holding back. I may have to save that episode.
^^oops, sorry, that should be "notation" and "GQ" article. :)
Wee! So much Jake going on. :D
Thanks WDW for the list of Jake!week events. Can't wait. Btw, does anyone know if there will be premiere and if it will be in NYC or LA or a premiere in both cities? Haven't heard any info on that? There are a ton of movies opening up on the 19th so it will be a busy time. And I have seen lots of ads on TV for the movie. Different versions on different channels. The one that had the cast names and AA nominations/wins listed and was glad to see they added Peter's name. I was surprised the full trailer didn't have him included. Thankfully it was changed.
Love that interview with Jake about BBM and Jarhead. I have heard it before and he is just so eloquent. Wonderful interview.
So no one from the "Rendition" group was at that New Line event last night. Oh well, we will have plenty of Jake starting next week!! ;D
Have a great weekend all!
Hi Marina - thanks so much for your thoughts on Swoff and Jarhead - I read somewhere today that the film sent out conflicting messages to some because of Sam's focus on Jake's buffness to the detriment of an analysis of Swoff's character. Interesting.
I agree that the GQ interview left so much open to interpretation - which I also thought was one of the reasons why I was so interested in it - but David Fincher's humour is a lesser know entity and I appreciated some clues!
Hi Get Real - I can see no sign of a premiere in either NYC or LA. At the moment, I'm thinking that the 'big event' will be Rome on the 21st but who knows at this stage? Studios don't seem to like to give much away - I've emailed them and they've not bothered answering.
I'm very glad to hear they're making more use of Peter's name in the publicity. I've still not seen a single trailer! My mum phones me up each time she sees one... :\
I'm not surprised at the no show last night.
Ah yes, that gorgeous buff bod obliterated all of my capacity for reason the first time I saw Jarhead . . . :)
Oh, apparently there's a profile of Jake on The Biography Channel (UK) on Thursday October 11th at 17:00 and 20:00.
I know Maria - when I wasn't being distracted by the jarhead cut, the body was incredible :)
Thanks bmg - I expect that's a repeat but a welcome one - unfortunately I can't get that channel but it's on IHJ, I believe. I'll add it to the schedule. Thanks!
Oh my goodness,I'll have to do a trawl of my mates with cable/satellite telly and find out who's got the Biography channel! Thanks for the tip Bmg!
So much Jake coming up and "Rendition" too! I shall be relying on the fabulous Stephanie at IHJ to get all the chat show appearances up on site for us Limeys.
I really appreciate Jake's eclectic music tastes,WDW, and yours. Mine are a broad church too, from Rachmaninov to Radiohead, from punk to funk, I'm willing to dip in to most if not all genres of music. I can cry at Maria Callas's version of "Vissi D'arte" from Tosca while still looking back with a fond grin at Alien Sex Fiend's "Drive My Rocket Up Uranus Baby"! A classic I tell you!
Keep your fingers crossed for me,because my husband has tentatively agreed to watch "Zodiac" with me tonight! Ok so once he gets comfy in front of the telly he often falls asleep, but I can carry on watching and for him to even countenance viewing a Jakey film is progress indeed! See you anon, folks. xxx

I had to laugh when I read this - me too, Nadine, me too! ;)
Hi Nadine - I hope you enjoy watching Zodiac with Hubby! I watched it with Mr WDW a few weeks back and he said at the end 'That was good!' as if it should be a surprise :)
... Alien Sex Fiend!!! One of your faves too Marina! :) I bet Jake wouldn't say no
Hi WDW,
Interviews, photographs, TV schedule and upcoming movies,
this is my go to place for all things Jake. It's safe--I can salivate in that old Hollywood fashion about my favorite actor-- exchange ideas and opinions freely, and not worry about snark.
