Rendition solidarity and Jake and the amazing bracelet

More beautiful pictures of Jake Gyllenhaal have emerged from the Los Angeles Rendition press conference. Now all we need are some photos from the conference of all of the cast with their director. I was struck, when listening to the press conference, with the respect and affection that each appeared to express for the other, whether it was Gavin Hood and Jake encouraging Moroccan actress Zineb Oukach to speak or Gavin protecting his two leading stars from 'unsuitable' questioning ('That was rough!' exclaimed Jake as if in sympathy with the press).

Gavin also remarked on his amazement at how well Reese coped with the paparazzi, who surrounded her from the first day, particularly when filming in Pasadena, the budget Chicago stand-in. Gavin had never been exposed to that kind of attention before and was intimidated. Reese, in turn, was intimdated by Meryl Streep and spoke of how nervous she was on the drive to work that day.

It's also interesting to consider Gavin Hood's perspective as a South African. At the press conference, Gavin spoke of how, as a young law student, he looked up to the US constitution as a guiding principle and that, when he learned of the practice of extraordinary rendition, he was shocked. This feeling was intensified because he is now the father of American children and he feels driven to recover that principle.

A red carpet Gyllenhug

I discovered another video of Jake and Reese arriving at the Rendition Gala in Toronto, this time from a CBS news report. It shows that on Jake's arrival the first thing he did was to wrap one lucky fella up in a famous Gyllenhug!

Jake and the bracelet

Talking of videos - let's backtrack a festival to Cannes and I hope you enjoy this video as much as I did. When an interviewer from Britain's ITN tried to ask Jake about his film, Jake was far too fascinated by her bright pink snap on bracelet! 'It's amazing!' he says and tells her it will add some time to the interview (I don't think she minded...). After trying it on a few times, Jake then snaps it around the ankle of his interviewer who says, perhaps unnecessarily, 'It's staying there'. The video includes new film of the red carpet and interviews with Chloe Sevigny (the difficulties of finding a dress suitable for the steps) and Mark Ruffalo, but it's the image of a laughing Jake snapping the bracelet round his wrist which lingers in my mind.

The LA Zodiac 'premiere'

The LA Zodiac premiere was... unusual. I speak with some knowledge of this as I was there - well as close to the red carpet as possible in those extraordinary circumstances. The event was moved from Hollywood to behind doors at Paramount Studios. All fans were barred and the few of us who turned up could just peer through the gate and see stars in the distance being photographed - a sham if ever there was one. Jake and David, of course, weren't there but the other members of the cast were, including Robert Downey Junior, plus Robert Graysmith himself and the lovely TDAT Emmy Rossum. The closest we got was Mark Ruffalo's brother coming out to take pictures of us and some woman sticking her head out of her car to yell out that Jake was gorgeous in real life - yep, we knew that.

This is a big preamble to say that I also came across a bizarre video of this oddest of premieres - two Danish reporters interview Chloe and ask her what it was like working with Jake. Chloe responds: 'He's very cute, very handsome. Sometimes it was quite distracting'.

Boot trouble at Boot Camp

I know that many of you love the funny little details as much as I do. This is today's. In an interview to promote Jarhead, Jake spoke of the tribulations of Boot Camp, which, appropriately included Boot trouble.

"Physically, I was ready for all the running after I killed myself working out, but then mentally it started. The first night of boot camp I got an hour and a half worth of sleep. I woke up in the middle of the night because I later found out (co-star) Lucas Black had thrown a bottle in the air and it hit me on the head when I was sleeping... Those things were constantly happening and, by the end of that week, I had gotten cumulatively 10 hours of sleep. My head was in such a weird space." As a result: "I had a 10-and-a-half wide and a 10-and-a-half regular (boot size) and I had loaned one of the guys my 10-and-a-half wide boots. I thought my other boots would stretch and it would be fine but I was standing there for two and a half hours and my left shin was hurting so badly."

And finally...

... hardly a surprise but it looks like neither Jake or Reese attended the New Line event last night.

Very sweet, WDW, I'm really admiring Gavin Hood right now. I'm going insane waiting for this film. Re the pink bracelet, what a flirt! ;)

Hey Marina! The more I see of Gavin Hood and hear what he says - the more I like him. I passed him in the street in Toronto when he was coming out of my hotel and he gave me a really big smile, so I think he rememebered me from saying hello to him outside the press conference. A nice guy.

And flirty Jake - sigh :) I want one of those bracelets!

Lovely stuff for a Sat. afternoon, WDW - when the roads are too crowded because of fall festivals to leave the house; besides it's very warm!

Seeing Jake in Cannes in the spot where he made the Happy Birthday Cannes video plus the shoe thing brought back memories - he seemed very happy, in Cannes - and young, and relaxed. Now that he has, by his own admission, anyway. "matured", what can this mean for the upcoming talk shows and interviews!

I have fallen in love with each manifestation of Jake, though, perhaps even more so.

I liked Gavin Hood alot, his warmth and passion and comments - and it becomes more and more clear that Jake leads with his heart, politically, as well as artistically.

Hi Positively Pia - I just don't know what to expect with some of these interviews either. It would be good also to see Jake on a 'serious' show, so that he would have the opportunity to discuss at length these topics that mean so much to him.

I have fallen in love with each manifestation of Jake, though, perhaps even more so., me too, Pia :)

Thanks for finding those, WDW! The bracelet bit was classic Jake, so playful and casually flirtatious without even meaning to be, I think (at least in some cases). And the fact that reporters still keep asking his costars what it's like to work with Jake Gyllenhaal...even in the jaded business that surrounds movies and stardom, people are almost universally smitten. Us regular folk never stood a chance of resisting him.

Hi WDW...long time between comments..but I have been extremely busy...I have had time to read...thank goodness for your wonderful site..and your fabulous updates...the press conference was great...a lot of great insight from the cast. The bracelet interview was
funny...I agree with Marina...Jake is a flirt... I actually had one of those bracelets when they were popular...it was not pink though..LOL!!

Hi Cherita thanks for the comment :) I'm absolutely charmed by the bracelet video - playful and flirtatious definitely. I don't know how Jake is to be resisted. I agree, we have no chance of being immune - all fall for Jake and who could blame them :) I'm watching Zodiac right now but it's not taking that image of playful Jake out of my mind.

Hey Michele! - our comments clashed ;) So good to see you again. I'm glad you've been enjoying the posts - the conference was very special - and I'm jealous of the bracelet, I've never seen such a thing. Good to see you back :D

Dammit, I reacted too soon. I iconized the Rendition conference pictures of Jake two days ago, but it looks like I'll have to go back to the drawing board cause I absolutely HAVE to include these newer ones.

Anywhoo, the Gyllenhug. My immediate response: WTF do I have to do to get a Gyllenhug? Anyone, please enlighten me, cause they look really comfy :).

Thank you WDW for the Zodiac interview! I've never seen that before. Jake just looks so cute engrossed in that pink bracelet. I guess we all should start wearing pink snap-on bracelets around now; just in case we run into Jake, the first thing we can say is "I HAVE A PINK BRACLET! DON'T YOU WANT TO PUT IT ON MY ANKLE?!"

Darn, the link was cut off in my other post.

Here it is again, if you would like to see: (just copy/paste both lines as one URL in your address bar)

Hi Fourplay - I love your little faces of Jake - they are incredible expressions. As a series, they seem to tell a story. Good luck fitting the new ones in :)

Those Gyllenhugs look special, don't they?

Anonymous said...

Hey WDW! Looks like you've been on a bit of a treasure hunt today! Thanks for all this stuff :)

Fourplay, if you find out what one has to do to get a GYllenhug, please can you let me know? ;) Personally, I'm wondering if chaining myself to the railings outside the BBC with one of those pink bracelets might do the trick!

And what's up with Lucas Black?! I loved his character in Jarhead, but I'm sorry, you DO NOT go around throwing bottles at our Jake - you got that?! I love how Jake just mentions it so casually though! My brave hero...*sigh*

Thanks for the Jake Week schedule WDW! So much to look forward to, and that's before Rendition is even released! Btw, for my fellow Brits with More4, Jon Stewart is on at 8.30pm every weekday (an hour later on More4 +1, and they sometimes repeat it later at night but I think the times vary). We usually get it a day after it's been broadcast in the US, so it should be on the 18th. Ellen's show is also on FiveUS but I'm not sure of the time or how behind the US it is, so I'll have to do more detective work!

The snap bracelet was delightful . So was the hug. Thanks for finding these.xxxooo

. . . so playful and casually flirtatious without even meaning to be, I think (at least in some cases).

Cherita, that's what I thought too - just naturally and sweetly charming, and deadly sexy, without even meaning to be it appeared. He was incredibly handsome in that clip. I'm just glad the interviewer could keep her professional composure, because it would have taken everything I had to conduct the interview if I had been in her shoes. Talk about disarming! :)

Ahh, that is the sweetest clip! And the caps are great - even better if you could cap that killer smile at :48-:49. I know I know - never satisfied. :D

Seriously, thank you for all. I don't know where you find all these little treasures day after day.

Morning everyone - overdosed on Zodiac last night so I needed a sleep in :)

Hi Twisted Logic - it was a good day looking around for little Jake treats; if I could do that everyday....

I quite like your Gyellnhug plan - hmmm, we need an awful lot of pink bracelets. Y'know, I'd not really thought about it before - but you're right. What is Lucas Black up to throwing botles at Jake's head! That is not acceptable.

Thanks for the heads up on the UK repeats of the Daily Show and Ellen. I have no idea how the Ellen repeats work, I think there's a longer gap. Is there any way to find out?

Hi Law Goddess - I'm glad you enjoyed the videos - I'm relieved I didn't wear them out!

Marina - that would hav been a difficult interveiw indeed to carry out. She must have been wearing her Jake Patch to get her through it. To get through Jake flirting...

Hey Neely - I'll see what I can do to capture the48-9 second laughter. I know the moment you mean. Thanks for the kind comment, much appreciatd *)

I just saw that Reese is on Ellen the day after Jake!

I saw a different trailer, or somewhat different I think, on television last night - with Douglas Freeman yelling, "open the gates". Wow - looked very intense. Two weeks to go!

I am loving all the Jake treasure, WDW, as usual. Feeling very spoiled, in fact LOL! BUT: I can't seem to get the flirtatious, pink bracelet Jake video to play for me. Everything else is working, just not that particular one....and I feel very frustrated.
He is definitely impossible to resist.

As for the TV appearnces, I'm wondering about Leno. Jake didn't do Jay Leno for Zodiac, bcz all his PR was centered on the East Coast. Probably bcz he had to fly in and out for Morocco. But it appears he is heading west this time to do Ellen, so maybe the Jay Leno appearance will happen. It wouldn't surprise me if Reese did Leno. I certainly will look forward to her conversation with Ellen...especially since she will be coming on the day after Jake.

Can any US Gyllenhaalics who watch Ellen help me out here please? I need to find out when Tobey Maguire was on Ellen's show, cos that's the episode that's broadcast tomorrow in the UK, so if we can find out when that was on, we should be able to work out when Jake's appearance is due. Hopefully someone will upload it anyway, but it's always nice to see Jake on our TV screens:) Any help would be hugely appreciated :)

Marina, that clip sounds brilliant! I haven't seen any TV trailers for days now:( Oh well, we get to see the whole thing soon - I can't wait!!!

Thank you, WDW! :-)

Hey twistedlogic! - I haven't found out about Tobey's appearance, but maybe you could start tracking the guests this way. Go to www.interbridge.com and scroll down to Music, Art & Entertainment, then click on "Late Show Line-ups". Ellen is close to the bottom.

On tomorrow's show (Mon Oct 8)she will have - Melanie Brown and Maksim Chmerkovskiy, Shawn Johnson, Matchbox Twenty. If you can wait until this show airs, you'll be able to track when Jake's show will air.

I think she is due to appear on Leno on the 16th

Hi everyone!

Ooh Marina - the 'Open the Gates!' moment in Rendition is one of my absolutely favourite moments! I can't wait to see that bit again. I still have yet to see a trailer....

Hi Bobyanna - I'm glad you're feeling spoiled but sorry the video won't play - the link's still working so I don't know why it's not working for you :(

As for Leno - I saw that Reese will beon the show that week (thanks Anon), but no sign of Jake - they've not put the schedule up for the rest of 'Rendition week' and still no Jake. I'm hoping this is because he's off to Rome. I hope somepne will capture Reese on Ellen as I'd like to see that.

Hey Twisted Logic - that's a good way to track it down, working from a UK edition and finding when it was aired in the US. I'll have a look. I might ask a question on a Tobey site! Two weeks.... can we last that long?

Hi Neely - I've grabbed a 48 second and a 49 second moment and they'll bein the post toay - just for you. Of course it was a real hardship having to watch Jake snap that braclet round his wrist again and again and again ;)

Anonymous said...

Thank you Neely! That's a great help. I'll have a look later and see if I can find when that one airs:)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

I've had a search around as far as I can see Tobey's not been on Ellen since 5 May this year so hmmmm - bit of a lag there :(

Anonymous said...

^Five months!!! Blimey! That's not good:( I just looked at the Sky Guide and the one Neely mentioned isn't on next week, which is as far ahead as it goes. Looks like we're in for a long wait, but if anyone's worth it, it's Jake :) Hopefully it will be online before then anyway. I wish some UK station would bring back Conan and Letterman, they used to be on but not anymore:(

Thank you for finding that pink bracelet vid. lol. I wonder how many pink bracelets Ramona now has so Uncle Jake would play with them. I wonder if Jake went to Lance and tried to convince him to make "Live Strong" snap bracelets. I wonder if I will ever stop drooling at the thought of Jake shackling my ankle with a snap bracelet. Sigh.

Oh and I had to lol when I saw the TIFF vid. I think I can hear myself and my banshee-ness. Can you make out who he's hugging? Is it Gavin? I didn't see it because I'm a midget and I know you were inside RTH. I know Gavin arrived before Jake and did some press but was hanging around as well. I don't think it was Peter because Peter was more rumpled.

You must be so excited about Jake crossing the pond to be with you again! xx Em

Hey Twisted Logic - hopefully we'll get to see Jake's Ellen on YouTube long before it airs on UK! I don't think I could wait 5 months!

Hi Smilesalot! It is funny when you can hear yourself on one of these videos - I heard me on one of the Cannes clips. As far as who Jake's hugging, it's not Gavin and it's not Peter. Iwas wondering if it was somebody connected to his publicity/management team as there were a lot of them about.

Can't wait to have Jake on this side of the pond :)

Oh that "Open the Gates!" scene from the Rendition trailer was quite breathtaking, WDW - looks like an explosion or something frightening. I'm more curious than ever now.

I'm fascinated by that pink snap bracelet too! ;)

Hello folks :-) I'm coming late to this but better late than never is surely apropos(!) here, because this is yet another great post,WDW,with little nuggets of gold unearthed all through it.

I agree with Pia,that Jake looked particularly relaxed(and devastatingly handsome)throughout his appearances at Cannes and this snippet with the pink bracelet is a peach, I just love his child-like geeky(in a good way)fascination with the mechanism of the bracelet. His flirting is so sweet too, because it does seen to a large degree unconscious and without any lurid intent,I'd be gob-smacked if he ever hit on anyone in a sleazy way,(if the likes of Colin Farrell had been doing this I'd have probably seen it as a preamble to getting into the interviewer's underwear - not to wear it...you know what I mean!Apologies to CF fans!)

And is it me,or does anyone else come over all unnecessary simply at the way Jake says the word "ankle"? Am I normal?(Sound of hysterical laughter...)

Chloe Sevigny seems quite a game girl, I like the fact that there's nothing overtly "Movie Star/Diva" about her and I had to smile at her conspiratorial giggles with the Danish reporters, especially all three of them going school-girly over Jake(and who wouldn't?!)
And mixed skinny-dipping??!! Chloe's certainly got chutzpah!

Her comments about choosing the right dress when there are lots of stairs involved gave me a nostalgic blush of embarrassment. I was walking down a flight of stairs into a gay bar with my then boyfriend about 20 years ago, when I caught my five inch stilletto heel in the hem of my long coat about 3 steps from the bottom and ended up flat on my face on the carpet in front of a bar full of customers, who gave me a round of applause! :-( And my boyfriend - he walked off to the bar, pretending he wasn't with me! One of the reasons why he eventually became an ex-boyfriend!

On the "Zodiac" front,as promised, my husband did watch it with me last night. He can sleep through half of his favourite programmes once he gets comfy,as he's normally knackered by the time we get around to watching TV,but he only dropped off for a minute a couple of times throughout and at the end said he'd enjoyed it,it was a very good film and that Jake was a good actor. That may not seem very effusive for those of us who know Jake is a wonderful actor, but coming from my husband that's some endorsement! I was chuffed to bits!

And finally,Gyllenhugs. Don't you just love to see a guy who isn't afraid to be publicly affectionate and tactile with friends of either sex? I would think a Gyllencuddle would have great therapeutic properties, endorphins a-go-go! What I'd give.....

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Nadine What a wonderful comment - never too late. I love what you said about Colin - even though he's my number 2 actor if you see what I mean - but that still puts him a hemisphere of miles behind Jake ;) I can never imagine Jake behaving in such a way and, while I derive amusement from Colin's antics, I would never wish to see Jake behaving in such a way, and nor would he.

I really like Chloe - and not only for pointing his fans out to Jake at Cannes, but also because she's not afraid to be different and 'quirky'. I'm not so keen on her dress sense but I did like this blue Cannes dress and Jake's matching blue tie. Sorry that I had a good laugh at your terrible date!

I'm glad your hubby enjoyed Zodiac. Mr WDW seemed to enjoy it too, in his own muted way. The thing with Zodiac is, you can never avoid the fact that it truly is a good film.

Gyllenhugs should be issued for all who want them - like flu jabs :D

Don't worry,I recalled that story about my trip down the stairs expressly because I thought it might give people a laugh. I think it's really funny now, despite being mortified at the time!
