Jake - 'when they come together, I do think they make a circle'

A beautiful wedding at the weekend - complete with tables decorated with packets of love heart sweets - puts me in mind of a post dedicated to the love between our two cowboys Jack Twist and Ennis Del Mar. Not least, because this was not a love with a happy ever after and it was not a love that was celebrated and toasted with glasses held high by joyful friends and family, brought together with that sole purpose.

This interview and feature on Brokeback Mountain comes from Pride on Screen and the gay and lesbian radio magazine This Way Out. In addition to audio clips from the film and its soundtrack, it also features interviews by Steve Pride with Ang Lee, Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal. A main theme is why Ang went with his choice of actors as well as the reaction of all three to having the performances called 'brave and daring'. And of course, the subject always returns to love and what the audience should take away from the story of Jack and Ennis.

So this is what Jake has to say, along with selections from Heath and Ang.

Jake: 'I thought that Ang would want to cast me as Ennis and Heath as Jack, just because I felt like Heath was more outgoing and you're used to Heath being a kind of active, less passive presence, you know, and somewhere in my mind, naively I guess, I thought that. And when we were cast opposite what I thought, I realised that Ang recognised in both of us something that I don't think either of us saw necessarily and that want to always kind of push forward and progress and change things was something in Jack that I felt like I really had too. And that the amount of words he says, I think, it's sort of the same thing in a different way. They're like ying and yang, you know, and when they come together, I do think they make a circle.'

'Heath and I talked a lot about - I find a lot of - just in Heath - in his own nature, I feel like Heath carries his heart on his shoulder. He's the kind of guy who's always protecting himself in different ways. But he's really a sensitive guy and whether or not he's talking or he's not talking, I think you can sense that from him always. And I was just playing with that. I saw that and it was like a friendship that we had as actors that was somehow translated into the movie.'

On whether or not Jake was 'brave' to take on the role of Jack Twist: 'All we were doing was servicing a story. You know what I think is really more courageous is people who are trying to be intimate in their real life and who are up against the real things. We were just making a movie for two months, when we played characters, and I think it's a time when more people are open to this than it might seem.'

Heath's response to the same question is, in hindsight, extremely powerful and not a little upsetting, and you must listen to it yourself. But he starts off by saying that 'Fire fighters are daring and brave - we're acting.' He's safe, not harmed and alive.

Ang says that it would have been easier if he had selected two gay actors for the roles 'but I have to go with my best choice.' 'I think Heath is a great anchor man for the western theme and Jake should be a romantic lead so I just go for the best possible choice.'

Finally, what Brokeback Mountain means to Heath: 'For me, it's a story of how love transcends all - the environment you're born in, the opinions of generations before you, ie your family, your parents, your father - and how love is stronger than opinions that are installed in you as a child and you can break down these barriers. And just the power of love.'

Oh so beautiful - I never tire of hearing about the thoughts and impressions of those involved in the making of Brokeback Mountan, a truly beautiful film, and one of my very favorite films ever.

Glad you had such a lovely time at your sister's wedding - :)

Hi Bertie - I was just in one of those Brokeback moods this evening :) I love to hear Jake and Heath discuss what drove them on to give such performances, and here that goes hand in hand with listening to their beautiful voices. Thanks! I had a great time :D

damn..... that movie never fails to put a lump in my throat.

'I think Heath is a great anchor man for the western theme and Jake should be a romantic lead so I just go for the best possible choice.'

and how perceptive Ang is.

and wow... you survived the wedding without a hangover, well done!

Hi Monica :D I agree - it's so good to go back and take a trip up the mountain :)

Hey Winterbird! Yep, I'm relatively unscathed :D Jake has romantic lead written all over him... Ang really did recognise and make us of Jake's potential. I could never see Jake as Ennis.

Pia, here.

Who'da thot that the Willie Nelson song would be more about Heath - ?
ironic as hell.

O Jake and his buddhist mind! I like Ang's "milk and water" metaphor even less than the ying and yang business, but - hey! love them all so dearly despite their inscrutableness. except Heath who is always highly artiulate. what a loss!

Im so glad WDW that you were inspired by your sister's wedding to celebrate BBMt love and wasnt THAT a wedding made in heaven - Ang, Jake, Heath, Anne, Michelle, Annie - do you really pronounce her name Pro-loo? - I guess - and the screenwriters and the divine Rodrigo and all -

ah sigh - it was a lovely interview. thank you!

(o gosh do I have to become a google blogger or whatever to avoid being anon? come on, pia, evolve, evolve!)

Hi Pia! Is the name/URL still not working for you?

You made me chuckle with your comment about Jake's Buddhist mind! And you're right, the whole of BBM was a marriage made in heaven, I didn't think of that :D

I have to admit that I have no idea how to pronounce Annie's name!

Thanks for the great post WDW!

I always felt that Heath and Jake had even more chemistry off screen than on screen. I love the way they were looking at each other, especailly Jake at Heath. They were perfect together.
Their film is one of my favourite of all time!

Hugs,

Sandy

Yes I'll join you WDW in a tipple in celebration of ying and yang and weddings. and chemistry and the beauty of BBMt - and the beauty of young men -

Sounds like an excellent toast to me, and that's what I'll raise my glass of Jamieson to - cheers Pia!

Yay for cyberpubs and pentomime horses and love everlasting (I do love weddings. . . ) or not, and WDW it's all your fault.

must go cook my supper. :D :D

oh Pia, you know when Ang Lee said that "You guys go like water and milk"... he didn't come up with it himself, it's a real Chinese proverb:

水乳交融 - check out the English meaning of it (item 15 on the list)

you know how much I want to go over there and teach Jake that proverb when he's scratching his head "what"? (too adorable..)

WDW, I agree... I can't see Jake as Ennis.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

I accept full responsibility, Pia :D I'm starving, enjoy your supper!

Winterbird, thanks so much for that - that's fascinating. And it's great to see it's a genuine proverb while also sympathising with Jake not having a clue. Jake would have appreciated your help on the set, clearly!

the picture is so dear, winterbird, of you serving as Jake's wisdom guide. Esp. Jake as the apparently "clueless" Congressman. I would love to "instruct" Jake. Heaven on earth!

Well Chinese proverb or not, I ain't got a clue. Milk and water makes watery milk. And I can just picture Jonathan Ross asking Jake whether he plays ying or yang. Bad JR!

A message for Nicole:
I could not see the videos. I do not know what happened, but not open.
You have another place to post them?
Someone has a place?
I want to watch!

Hi Monica - they probably don't work as you haven't got a later version of Flash installed on your computer. I'd download a new version and see if that helps.
