Jake Gyllenhaal - I'm young and I vote

Today Oxford's streets were even more clogged up than usual, the reason being a small protest against the current situation in Zimbabwe, by people from that country who now live here and therefore are able to voice a protest. And much of that protest was through song and dance. With Barack Obama now almost certainly the representative of the Democratic party in America, this seems like a good day for a brief look back at the place of democracy and civic liberty in Jake's list of course, focusing on the last Democratic campaign, back in 2004.

Then, Hollywood, as ever, was used as a means of drawing the young and apathetic to the polling booths and Jake Gyllenhaal was one of those who went out of his way to make voting something the young and sexy should want to do. Jake's main role was to attract first voters. A big part of this was visiting college campuses, as can be seen in this video, taken at Carroll College, Wisconsin, on 28 October.

The tour continued to Bowling Green State University, where Jake said 'When young people turn the age to vote, they are more excited about buying porno and cigarettes than voting.'

In September 2004, Jake was one of those who featured in a special video on the Oprah Winfrey show, again encouraging the young to vote by almost wooing them to the booth. Definitely, Kerry had brought out his big guns and we could see how handy Jake was with the pompoms.

One of Jake's causes has been Declare Yourself and in March 2004 it held an event at the Beverly Hills Post Office, which was attended by 'some of Hollywood's most influential young actors', including Jake, Kirsten Dunst, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Peter Sarsgaard, Reese Witherspoon, Tobey Maguire and Mark Ruffalo. At the event, the young stars could examine the only touring original printed copy of the Declaration of Independence.

'"A lot of my friends who are sort of just leaving their parents' home and establishing their own life, they don't have health care because they can't afford it," "Moonlight Mile" star Jake Gyllenhaal said. "If there was something serious that would happen — God willing it doesn't — I hope they can afford it, and right now they can't. It freaks me out and it's a huge issue." Gyllenhaal also predicted the environment — a topic he's been studying for an upcoming film — would be an important issue in the presidential election, and he showed off his new "I'm Young And I Vote" T-shirt, a reaction to the controversial "Voting Is For Old People" shirt...'

'Jake's sister, Maggie Gyllenhaal, also attended Tuesday's event, walking hand-in-hand with beau Peter Sarsgaard, whom she described as "the guy who reads five newspapers a day." "The economy and the ongoing war and how much the government will be involved in our social lives, those are the three big issues," said Sarsgaard, who earned a Golden Globe nomination for "Shattered Glass."'

Although the event was non-partisan, in 2004, Jake never made a secret of his support for the John Kerry campaign.

While Maggie drove people to the polls, Jake was known to go one step further and literally carry them there... This one looks like she's got a good grip.

A huge thanks to a good friend for helping with the pictures.

Talking of Jake and Peter, I can never get enough of this. If Jake and Peter tell me to eat soap suds, I fear I may...

Includes pictures from here, View Images, IHJ and a good pal!

It's great to see Jake pics I haven't seen before!

"including Jake, Kirsten Dunst, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Peter Sarsgaard, Reese Witherspoon, Tobey Maguire and Mark Ruffalo."

Lol!

Hi Narcissa - glad you liked the pics, it's taken 2 days finding them all :D And the list of stars just shows what a small world Hollywood world is :D

Great post, some pictures I've never seen but I seriously don't think Jake knows anyone who cannot afford health care. He comes from a very affluent background, I'm pretty sure, financial worries are something he isn't familir with. Just my humble opinion.

Thanks for acknowledging this "historic" day, WDW - wonder if Jake and pals will have time to do some campaigning, this year -

Awk! too hot to tawk!

Hey there Anon - so glad you enjoyed the post and pics :D This quote dates from a time when Jake was that little bit younger and he may have been painfully aware of the (growing) financial differences between himself and other people less fortunate, and this was how it expressed itself. It's an interesting quote.

Hi Pia! Now there is one official Democrat to back I do hope Jake will be able to do some campaigning. He did so much in 2004. Stay cool in the heat. A beautiful day here :)

You've outdone yourself again WDW. What a fantastic post with sprinklings of current issues eg. Obama could be the next president and Jake's strong links to the ACLU.

I was very lucky one day to be at home and watch a repeat of the Oprah Winfrey show where Jake and Maggie were doing their thing for students to vote. They made a very serious issue into a fun and interesting one. I can't believe even with those guys campaigning hard that Bush won again??? I won't even go there.

I wonder if that college student who Jake carried on his back knew who he was?! She'd get the shock of her life now I bet!!

Anon, from what I've read, Jake's parents have encouraged him to meet people from a variety and diversity of backgrounds, probably that's why he seems so comfortable around everybody. His point was if these friends leave the comfort of their parent's house they may have difficulty. In addition, who's to say what the future may bring for anybody - times and fortunes change so uncertainty about the future is a right that even Jake should have.

WDW, your posts are very insightful, thoughtful and so appropriate for what's happening around us today. I humbly thank you for this gift and to the friend that supported you through this - you just don't know xx

haha... Jake and the cheerleaders :) that photo never fails to bring a smile on my face.

is it just me or the people around Jake are more interested in looking at Jake than, err... the other political stuff?

I wonder if Jake will be as involved as in 2004, since he has a very busy summer....

Thanks so much for that, Sheba *) I love how events in life and in the wider world tie in with Jake. Now that the Democrat ticket is decided I really hope we will see something of Jake in the campaign, but he's going to have such a busy summer. Who know, though?

I saw that Oprah Winfrey too and I've never forgotten it.

Hi Winterbird :D I love Jake and cheerleaders!!! I have to say that Jake must have been quite an attraction and a distraction :)

Just popping in to say for this post, WDW (and friend) xx Brilliant pics :D
The subject matter here is really interesting to me, but my brain's not up to it atm (especially after watching that Jake/Peter vid *swoon* ) so I'll have a proper read tomorrow and comment then(by which time hopefully everyone will have said what I want to say, only a million times better, and I won't need to).

Hope everyone's having a good weekend :)

It's like a sauna here in Boston this weekend: low 90s by day, and about 70 at night. I just got back from watching "Don't mess with the Zohan," which was one of Adam Sandler's better efforts. Since this current post is about Jake's participation in the political process, I'll just mention a funny scene in which (male) Israeli and palestinian immiogrants in a New York neighborhood talk about what they would like to do with Hillary Clinton and Laura Bush and Mrs. Obama. Subtle it's not, but it's good-natured. I don't think Jake has worked with any of the actors that were in this movie. Sorry.

Health care is a perennial concern of mine. The "right" to health care has morphed into the ubiquity of HMO's, which I'm not sure is the best way to go. But you can't stop them, and they keep getting paid whether their patients are well or sick. That just seems to me like a prescription for costs getting higher and higher.

Correction: There is *one* actor in "Don't mess with the Zohan" who worked with Jake: Barry Livingston, who had small parts in DMWTZ and "Zodiac." I had to go through about fifty actors in the cast list to find the link, though... :-/

Good morning everyone! Another beautiful day here - very warm and sunny. Pleasant change after last week's storms and flooding.

Hi Paul! Thanks for telling us about the Zohan movie - it sounds quite fun. I like how you found the link ;D

Have a great day everyone - I've got a Jaking treat - lunch with Winterbird :D

Morning :D

WDW, glad you got wined and dined Friday night, that the weather is great there and that you have a wonderful lunch

with Winterbird!

As like Paul and Pia, we are having a major heat wave here. It was steaming hot yesterday, will be today and tomorrow.

Paul, I saw the Zohan movie too and agree with all you said about it. But I did have a few laughs from it.

Back to Jake :D I love/loved that he has been part of supporting the Democratic process and did so much to get people to vote. Makes me love him even more! Plus, it's very sexy to see him and Peter in that video...they sure make me want to get out and vote! ;p

Going back to the last thread, it's impressive that Jake's work on the stage was so well received. He's a true talent. Poor Kieran C though. He was great in Igby Goes Down.

Have a great day. :)

Hi there Get Real! Hope you're OK in the heat. A beautiful hot and sunny day here. I had a lovely lunch sitting outside in the sun with Winterbird. Such a great time :D

Jake and Peter make me want to vote and I'm not even eligible :( The more I read about Jake's success on the London boards in TIOY, the more I realise how talentd he is. That was no easy feat.

Hope everyone's having a great day :D

That student that was "carried" knew before he ever picked her up who he was. She was thrilled. Her dad worked for the UW Daily Cardinal when he went to school there; he now works for the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinal. He e-mailed that photo to all his friends - proud PaPa. The student carries that photo on her smartphone to this day
( she showed it to me a few weeks ago).
