Backstage on Prince of Persia - and Jake Gyllenhaal 'cuts the mustard as an action hero'

Thanks to JakeWeird for uncovering some Prince of Persia backstage gems! Here are four behind the scenes videos from the set in Morocco, with the caption: 'Backstage of the Disney feature film; Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (2010), shot in Marrakech, Ouarzazate, Agdez Arfoud Morocco.' No obvious sign of Jake Gyllenhaal but nevertheless great to get some glimpses of the environment in which Jake's been working during recent weeks.

Yesterday we were looking at some of the Prince of Persia news that emerged during Jerry Bruckheimer's presentation at Disney Day in Hollywood this week. There are more pieces today. [Thanks to IHJ for some new old pics, including this beauty.]

Empire Online: 'We saw some brief clips and animatics from Mike Newell’s upcoming Prince of Persia, which looked really strong and could be the movie to break the curse of the videogame adaptation. Jake Gyllenhaal, in the title role, is really buffed up, and we saw a couple of cool but brief swordfight sequences which proved he could cut the mustard as an action hero. Gemma Arterton looked stunning, and we also saw some really interesting concept art of the bad guys, some of whom can shoot snakes at people. We also got a brief animatic look at the way Gyllenhaal's character can pause time. This looks like it could be a very nice surprise.'

Shoot snakes at people - at Jake! Oh my...

This reviewer on seeing the footage said: 'The production is only in its first few weeks of shooting so there weren't any completed shots but they did show some of footage from dailies, on set and animatics/pre-viz. I have never been the biggest fan of Jake Gyllenhaal, but I have to admit, he looks pretty bad ass as Prince Dastan... Not much of the story was revealed, even though the script has been reviewed by multiple online outlets. Prince of Persia is massive - the sets are huge, the action sequences are huge and the only thing that comes to mind is that this is another Pirates of the Caribbean in the making.'

Meanwhile, students have been invited to help Disney come up with some ideas for a new theme park ride, and you can guess which film it's based on.

Thanks for the update, WDW!!!! I can think of several suggestions for a Prince-themed theme park ride...but none of them would be Disney material!

Thanks Anon! Those vids were well hidden away on YouTube, so good job to JakeWeird for finding them :D

Hmmmm - Disney PoP ride.... Mine would feature a magic carpet, some exotic music and candles (although they might be a hazard on a carpet) and some gentle soaring. There would only be room for me and the Prince of course :D

...the more I know about the movie, the more I think I'm gonna love it...! I love sweet Jake, but bad ass Jake sounds too good aswell ;)

Thank you WDW for the updates ;) now I'm in a bad need to see all this vids of Jake fighting!!

Hi Good Girl! Bad Ass Jake is good - RDJ saw this side of Jake and I wanna see it too! Ahem... I just wish more than I can say that we could get to see the swordfighting clips too :(

This looks like it could be a very nice surprise.

Good news if it's from Empire magazine, yes? I'm so happy! I can't wait to see the videos once I get home. BTW, I love that pic from GQ, the outtake. Reminds me of October Sky for some reason. :)

Thanks, WDW! :)

Hey good to see you BK! It really is good to hear such places coming to the realisation that Jake can play badass. I do think some of them have never seen Jarhead...

That picture from GQ is absolutely wonderful :)

Hope you're having a good day!

Thank you WDW, I am having a great day, despite the rain. A good day to work, only now I have to wait to see the videos until I get home! I wish Jake mucho success in PoP. It's very exciting to hear about how things are going. His Royal Bad Ass Highness, I love it. :)

It is great to hear how things are going, and I hope we hear lots more :D Sorry to hear about your rain :( Beautiful here but a very frustrating day - my car is sick and has failed its MOT on just about everything and is being rebuilt - sigh! I hope one of these days I get it back! Off topic whinge over :D Jake is hot!

hey everybody! caught in election weirdness, and other strange happenings, but I Will Survive due to whatever heat-seeking mechanism is implanted in our beloved WDW that seeks out HOT PIX of Jake.

Glad to see our Prince has some control over Time; wish I did.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Pia! Thanks so much for that :D I can't take credit for hot pix though - with Jake it's very hard to find a cold one :) Wouldn't mind some control over time myself - I wonder what the Prince is like with car mechanics... But I don't like the sound of the evil baddies chucking snakes at Jake :(

I'm keeping myself in blissful ignorance as far as all the political etc shananigans are concerned. I find that when I miss Jake I just can't focus on such issues... :D Have a good afternoon/evening!

I'm glad that the filming to date is receiving positive reviews.

In honor of Jake's epicurean adventures in the land of couscous and tangines, I have committed myself to several months of sampling some of the leading recipes. Tonight I will be making a tagine (tagines are Algerian, and tangines are Moroccan, though I don't see much difference) with olives, raisins, chickpeas, beef, and some other ingredients, all bolstered by a spicy, aromatic sauce that contains plenty of cilantro. (Everything I will be eating this coming week will contain generous amounts of cilantro, except for the salad and dessert courses....)

On a moment, I will have to take a black bean and salsa calzone out of the oven--that's got plenty of cilantro, too.....

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi there Paul! There are tagines as well as tangines? I think I'll stick with my vegetarian toad in the hole :D

Wow, thanks for all the fantastic news on PoP!!! Sounds very promising and I am so happy to hear very good buzz on Jake as the Prince. What a great thing to hear about his movies and not about his private life. I think they are giving this a very good spread out intro to get people talking. Now we just need news on Brothers.

Frankly, while this kind of movie isn't my thing either, when I hear such good buzz that makes me feel it will be very good. Same goes for Batman, etc. I don't have issue with Johnny Depp, Heath, Maggie, Christian Bale, etc. doing some light summer movies with action figures, so I don't see the issue with Jake.

He still has Brothers and Nailed, which I hope their PTB get off their asses and promote properly. As for the difficult angles Ang mentioned, well I found no problems in BBM, Zodiac (and I am sure DF would have said something about it), Jarhead or Rendition so I have no issues there.

Sure I don't love the hair, etc. but it is for the role and Jake is an actor who changes his looks for a part. I think it is most important to see it in the final movie to make any jugements.

As I said above I am thrilled to hear good things about Jake's work in his films and I hope PoP is a great movie even if it is summer fair.

Pia, I am with you in having a lot of frustration with the political weirness going on.

But last night had a wonderful time seeing In the Heights, which won the TONY on Broadway. If any of you can get to see a Broadway show that is one to see for sure.

Hope everyone has a good Friday/weekend. We are having rain...

And the Jake pics are stunning...those eyes...sigh. :)

Hey Get Real! Good to see you :D I so agree with you - it is great to have the net buzzing with movie news about Jake and not his personal life.

I am so ready to hear some promo news for Brothers and I think it's about time that the powers that be behind Nailed pull their fingers out and get this film distributed. Jake spends all that time making a movie, I want to see it!

So glad to hear you had a good night on Broadway! Sounds good to me. I love it when I can get to London for a play/show in the West End. I hope it dries up for you soon :)

have a good evening :D

Thanks for the updates WDW. I think this movie will either be a huge success or all or a bomb. Not everything Disney is automatically a success. And not all video inspired movies make it (I'm not sure how successful Tomb Raiders was)

But I do wish Jake much success. I hope we get to see a trailer or some clip soon of the Prince. You know in one of the vids you see some riders walking their horses you can't tell if one of them could have been Jake.

Hi Trekfan :D I do hope PoP is successful - I think it will be and I think Jake will be a big draw for some moviegoers who wouldn't normally see such a film - a bit like RDJ in Iron Msn and also Heath in TDK. Although I must say I'm one of the few who loved the Tombraider movies (especially the first one) possibly because I love the games and have played them (badly) for years.

I know just what you mean about that video. I was looking at the3 riders and horses and just wishing we could see Jake. I miss him :) Thanks for commenting!

Hi, WDW. There are plenty of vegetarian tangines and tagines. Some of them have no cilantro in them. I hope I haven't scared you (or anyone else) away from them.

As for cutting the mustard, the original expression was about musters, not mustard. There would be a call for soldiers, and some would make it (cut the muster), while others would be disqualified.

Oh no, no shooting snakes at Jake, we will be his protective barrier!...I'm getting pumped up for POP, even though we have so long to go..:( However,we must stay strong to keep us in check until we see or hear about Jake's moves!! I all of a sudden feel like a drill seargent or a leader of the Jake forces!:)) I don't think I could withstand the pressure!!

Whew, thank you WDW for the great B&W pics of our beautiful man;) The main thing that I do miss with B&W pics, are his incredible blue eyes. He is the type of person I think that you are drawn to..ahhh..
even with just the eyes:) *blink, blink*

'night everyone:)

Oh yes, no boots in bed baby!!

Morning all! A pea souper out there, wrap up Jake :D

Hi Paul! Thanks for that explanation. I do like to hear where familiar expressions come from. Talking of mustering, I was re-listening to the Jake and David Fincher interview soundbite last night, with the idea of them doing a swampy and muddy Civil War movie together. Would love to see that :D

Hey there Viv! Boots in the bed are bad, but if Jake insists... We are definitely going to be about fit to burst when PoP finally makes it to our big screens. I miss Jake's eyes too :D

I'm in shock at the price of having my car rebuilt... I feel the need to go out there and hit it with a branch a la John Cleese. Have a good day everyone!

A couple nights ago, i dreamed that Heath Ledger had a dual career: when he was between movies, he worked as a reference librarian at the library where I work. In the dream, he had not died (someone had caught him just in time), and he was back among us while he built up his strength for more movies.

Well, Paul, Ive always liked the housewifey take on cutting the mustard's heat with vinegar. Farmers dont cut the mustard in the field, you've gotta pull it up by the roots. Cutting the muster seems a further reach, but I'll give it nod.

As for our beloved WDW you must have a smart bomb implant that takes you directly toward HOT JAKE - your amazing choice of pictures keep the HOT alive while our boy is gone -

Indeed YOU'RE DA BOMB

"I wanna sport you like a lexus coop i wanna make you my boo cause
you're da bomb (you're da bomb) yeah you're da bomb bomb biggy bomb baby baby biggy biggy. . . "
ETCETCETC.

Have a great weekend everypeeps!

Good post. Thanks for the info WDW.

I hate to bring the fun element down here but I just heard the news and I'm gutted. Paul Newman has died. I know he was Jake's showbusiness godfather. I'm so sad for his family. I adored him as an actor and I hope Jake has the same interesting career as he's had. I knew it was coming but .... still so sad news.

Hey, Sheba. Im also shedding tears for Paul Newman's death this morning and glad for his fine work and life -

Our beloved actors are like family, eh?

I have always envisioned and do hope for such a career and life for JG - full and fertile!

Thanks Pia, yes, we invite them into our homes and our hearts.

This is a really good reflection of what I thought of Paul - rest in peace you beautiful man.

Good evening everyone.

I'm gutted aswell hearing about Paul Newman.

He was a brilliant actor and a lovely man.

May he rest in peace.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Carol :) Reading around today, it's very clear what a special man Paul Newman was, never mind his acting genius. This is what makes people such as Paul and Jake stand out.
