I believe that some readers in the United States may have had their minds taken off the all-important issue of Jake by some vote that is taking place tomorrow. When Jake himself was able to join in with campaigning back in 2004, he reflected that it was one of the few times when people would listen to celebrities: 'What's interesting about celebrities is that somewhere within some of them, at least, there's a non-partisian part of the work that they do... I hope that they hopefully have fans from everywhere, and if they take a stance on something, maybe people will hear what they have to say.'
Jake's impact on the voting public was unanimous: '"(I attended) partially because I am a supporter of Kerry," [a girl said], "(and), second of all, I've been in love with Jake Gyllenhaal since 'Donnie Darko' came out."' And another potential young voter at a different campus: 'It's hard not to be happy when Jake Gyllenhaal swings by to say hi'.
As a Brit with no votabilities whatsoever in a US election, I will resort to subliminal messaging....

I have tons of American friends and I'm almost "forcing" them to vote, because this last administration (I don't even pronounce that man's name), made the world a worse place.
It's time to recover. It's time to see and understand at once that an American President (unfortunately) is the president of the Planet. He has the power of changing lives all over the Globe. He and his partners scare me to death! I'm sure If oxygen was worth money, they would invade Brazil and occupy the Amazon Rain Forest. If bananas were worthy, they would invade Martinica! And so it goes. Like they've done to Iraq's oil. War on terror? I doubt!
Some Americans have no idea of how their decision can change MY life. That's why I asked my friends do go out and vote, if not for themselves, for me!
That's it. If the third world's population is not a good reason, please go out and vote BECAUSE JAKE ASKED YOU TO!

Yes I am ready to VOTE tomorrow!! I can't wait to do my civic duty for the U.S. and the world.
This election has been hard on a lot of levels. I am more than anxious about tomorrow. I can only hope and pray that we will have real change with a president who is thoughtful, graceful, inspiring and intelligent enough to be inclusive of the world, like Monica said, and who is about change and not hate and divisiveness.
So all I can say is YES WE CAN!!!

I do agree with you guys about how important your vote in the US is for the entire world, I so wish I could vote too! ;) Actually it's weird how I seem to be so much more interested in US elections than those in my own country, probably because I'm kind of disgusted by our government and politicians...Jake being part of voting campaigns would definitely stimulate my interest though ;)

I've voted, but I'll be on pins and needles today and well into the night! The polls close at different times in different states, but we should have some early indications on which way it's headed.
For Example, polls close in Virginia at 7 PM. Virginia is closely contested, but Obama is expected to win the state. Ohio, Indiana, and Pennsylvania will close at 8 PM, I believe. Pennsylvania is going towards Obama, while Indiana is a dead heat, they say, as is Ohio. I will be watching those three as well as Florida. I do not expect Obama to get Ohio or Indiana, but if that is so, he must win in Pennsylvania, and a win in both Florida and Pennsylvania will lock it up for him.
In the western U.S., Obama is polling well in Colorado and New Mexico. They're saying he has Nevada, too, but I'm not so sure.
In any event, we'll know, based on how well things go in the eastern U.S., how things stand, hopefully before midnight, our time. (Of course, this assumes there will be no mischief or "breakdowns" at polling places.)
I think there are a lot of people all over the world today, who'd love to be able to vote in our election, and I don't blame them.
My thoughts and prayers are with Senator Obama and his family for so many reasons, but knowing that he lost his grandmother, as he described her, the person "Who poured everything she had into me..."
Wish us luck! Hopefully, this time we will get it right!!!!

Well, in fairness to Monica, and as an American, I took her comment to mean that possibly young Americans are considered silly to the rest of the world, and by silly I thought she meant taking their circumstances for granted, taking the right to vote for granted, not taking things seriously and being too involved with superficial things, haven been given everything and not knowing poverty or what it means to work for something. Other young people across the globe are not as lucky as we in the US. I share her wish that all young people get out and vote today, historically they are the ones who do not. I don't think she meant any harm. I think changes starts with recognizing areas where we need improvement and trying to fix it. That's not anti-American in my book :)

But to be respectful, I believe we must not make generalizations about other cultures.

Well, we Americans do have an "image problem" in other countries' views, and not totally undeserved. We're not all like that tho, generalizations don't help matters, but neither does pretending problems don't exist, which is another form of ignorance, and which is not bliss. I didn't mean to "generalize" either; I was just trying to consider another's point of view. I don't view people from other countries in cultural stereotypes, and neither should they view us as stereotypes. There are many, many involved, knowledgeable and politically active young Americans. I think Mr. Obama is going to do great things. :)

I wish I could say that Jake swung by to say hi at my polling place this morning, but unfortunately he didn't. Nevertheless, I did vote, and I have my fingers crossed. I'm not so much concerned about the two candidates for President, but one of the Vice-Presidential hopefuls is scaring me almost to death with what the candidate might do to scientific progress if the candidate succeeded upon the death of the candidate's running mate. (I can't give away the candidate's gender...)
I hear people talking about the election as I stand in supermarket checkout lines. It is seen as an almost holy movement that transcends party, and will change history. This one is very different from any other election I have experienced. Something very big is going on.
But, yes, having Jake at the polls might have boosted turnout. I can only hope he was busy boosting turnout elsewhere. ;-)
