Jake Gyllenhaal did not get a nomination for Brothers. However, Tobey Maguire is up for an award - maybe the panel muddled them up? And so is U2. Here's hoping that success comes their way, if only to prevent the Avatar song 'I See You' from winning. Maggie and Peter Sarsgaard have also not been nominated despite, as with Jake, having given critically-acclaimed performances in 2009. But best of luck to Carey Mulligan who is up there alongside two other British actresses, Emily Blunt and Helen I'm-Running-Out-Of-Dresses Mirren. Maggie, Peter and Ramona arrived back at LAX this weekend amid twitter sightings of Jake buying cookware at Surfas. Time to try out a new recipe on the family? Maggie did attend the BAFTA tea party yesterday and there's an amusing account from the function here.
From the sound of it, people have been doing their hair and picking suits and dresses for the last 11 months. But not Maggie: 'Former Globe contender Maggie Gyllenhaal decided only recently to go to the Globes, in part to show support for her "Crazy Heart" costar Jeff Bridges, who is nominated for best Actor in a drama. "When I've been nominated, you get like 20 dresses and you try them all on and you do the whole thing," Gyllenhaal said. "I came out here actually for work, and only decided last minute, actually, to go to the Globes. And I tried on one dress and that's the dress I'm wearing."' I'm imagining a mealtime Gyllenhaal debate over the relative merits of Tobey Maguire and Jeff Bridges for Best Actor, with Peter in the middle saying 'It should have been me!'
All this talk of awards, reminds me of two of my favourite quotes from Jake, which come from when he was given a New Power Award by Premiere back in 2004. Fashion Wire Daily reported: '“I know you guys came to see me tonight, not Tom Cruise,” kidded Gyllenhaal, whom presenter Mark Ruffalo (news) crowned “the new punk rock movie star,” “This award means a lot to me because my girlfriend and my sister already have one. But it really does look like a penis. Oops, sorry ‘Premiere.’” At the afterparty, Jake elaborated: ''"This award looks like a penis," remarked Jake Gyllenhaal, who received one of the obelisks. "Not a particularly normal one. In fact, I feel sorry for any woman or man who have to accept a penis like this."'
One shudders to think what Jake will say when he wins his first Oscar...

Oh, I hope to see Jake somehow involved in the events surrounding the Globes today. Maybe a pic at the after parties or something. Frankly, I would love if he attended the Globes to support Tobey and U2.
I absolutely agree that Peter should have been one of the nominees for best actor. He does his job too well, though. He makes his acting seem too easy and effortless, so the critics don't figure out how much talent and effort he uses. :-(
I couldn't agree more, Get Real! It would be so good to see Jake a part of all this, supporting Tobey and U2 like Maggie supporting Jeff. But, I think, this year Jake'll play it very low key. But as for the Oscars. I'm really hoping we see Jake there this year :D I also really hope Tobey and Carey win tonight. Hi Paul! Posting at the same time - totally agree about Peter. He should have been in that list, absolutely. I do agree with your statement that Peter makes it look too easy for these critics. I think Jake has a bit of that about him too.

It's good Tobey was nominated but he won't win.
I would hope if there are more of the reviews from Britain that menioned Brothers best performance being Jake's that the BAFTA's will notice.
Hi Anon - I think Jeff will win but I'm really hoping on a surprise for Tobey. Brothers and Jake are getting great reviews in the Uk but, unfortunately, the Baftas longlist is out (posted it a few days ago here) and Brothers wasn't on it. I'm hoping that's because of release dates but I doubt it.
Sometimes Jake is so disrespectful about some things.
I want to see Jeff Bridges winner. He is a great actor and deserves all the awards. But I'll be happy if Colin Firth win.

Jake's full of life and having a laugh, Monica, and more power to him. I wouldn't want him any other way. I hope you can tell from my posts that I love too laugh with Jake. I love a man with a sense of humour who doesn't take himself too seriously. Life is too short.

Jake is who he is. I see no point in being judgemental about him enjoying a laugh, especially about something he said six years ago when he was such a young man. Anyway, just my opinion :) Jake is funny! plenty of actors aren't. He could be a lot worse!

Jake is at the 2:00 minute mark and Peter and Maggie are at the 11:57 mark. Jake is all smiley, looking very sexy, and Peter and Maggie look great.

I've seen pics of Maggie's arrival, she has a cute dress on and looks nice. Anne attended the party too. I wonder if she and Jake became closer friends after LAOD? I'm so looking forward to them promoting their movie later this year.

I just got back from seeing "A Single Man." Extremely moving and well done. Firth's performance is really great, but I really marvelled at Matthew Goode's versatility. He can play a proper Englishman like Charles Ryder ("Brideshead Revisited"), or an Irishman ("Leap Year"), or an American gay man (A Single Man." He was also in "Watchmen." Incredible talent! Someday he is going to march out of a ceremony with an award of some kind.

The GG party was the one he came to late. Wasn't able to be there because of late filming of "Zodiac". So he wasn't there during the show to be drinking.
Think that was the thing Fincher talked about Jake wanting to go to an awards show, but filming came first.
Whatever happened at the party is still not something he continually does as a public thing.

I think you're in the wrong fandom if you can't appreciate some wry sense of humour. A combination of a very tight entrance guarded by the paparazzi, bright lights, uneven pavement, and someone with a distractingly heavy German accent calling out to the stars, which probably caused a good few of them to think they had missed the memo about the GG's being moved to Frankfurt.

I just looked at the list of Golden Globe winners. I've seen all but one of the performances, namely the one in "Precious." I had been thinking of seeing "Precious" today, but we had a horricious storm last night, so the roads may well be bad. besides, the closest theater that's showing it is in Waltham, which is about 15 miles away, and the closest parking lot is a hike, especially when the bitter wind is hitting you. :-(
Thanks for this wonderful video. Jake looks great, though his face looks thinner. I noticed that when he has a beard his face looks heavier. I hope he is doing okay. He is certainly happy to be at the party. Spending time with his sister and her family and other actors.

Tas the guy you heard calling out the star's names was not German. I've seen him on Jimmy Kimmel his name is Ya ya. I believe he is Egyptian. He goes to most of the awards ceremonies in LA and gets pics of himself with celebs. He's shown them on Jimmy Kimmel's show. He doesn't even know the celeb's names.
