An update on a much anticpated Jake Gyllenhaal movie requires a second post of the day, especially as it coincides with new photographs from the ultra glamorous and mysterious photoshoot - many thanks to IHJ for these beautiful pictures. The movie update is that Damn Yankees, starring Jake and Jim Carrey, is getting closer and its writer/director Todd Graff has been talking about his plans, which have brought the musical into the 21st century. Apparently Graff is a diehard baseball fanatic... he hides it well.
"['Damn Yankees' will be] a big, movie-star movie," the Mets fan explained of the flick, remembering a time when he had to sell himself to the producers. "I said, 'Listen, there may be writer/directors out there who know more about musicals ... there may be writer/directors out there who know more about baseball, but I guarantee you, there is no writer/director out there that knows more about musicals and more about baseball and hates the Yankees as much as I do.'"
'"If a character like Joe Hardy — who's the character in 'Damn Yankees' — sprung out of nowhere and was hitting 70 home runs in a season, who would not think immediately 'steroids'?" said writer/director Todd Graff, who has cast Gyllenhaal in the Tab Hunter role of a baseball fan who sells his soul to become the greatest player. "So [steroids] is not even a side character for us; it's our main character. No one is going to think, 'Oh, it's because he made a deal with the devil!' They'd think, 'He's juicing!'"
"The original was about the Washington Senators, who obviously don't exist anymore," Graff said of one major update that will undoubtedly please the fans of a Chicago team that has gone 102 years without a championship. "Now, the most obvious candidate is the Cubs. It is going to be set now, and my whole pitch was that it should feel like 'Jerry McGuire' with songs," Graff explained. "It should really feel like the real world of a major sports franchise and what would happen with this fantastical goofy, funny idea of a baseball fanatic who sold his soul to Jim Carrey as the devil in order to be turned into a 20-year-old Joe Mauer."'
'Graff is planning to hold on to only a handful of the original songs and having new ones composed — including one possibly about, yep, steroids. "There will definitely be about five or six new songs," Graff revealed. "[We'll keep] some of the originals, but we'll jettison some of the originals, and we'll write some more new stuff." For fans of the original, however, don't worry: The sexy, signature tune "Whatever Lola Wants" isn't going anywhere. "It'll be in there," he assured, saying he's currently looking to cast his Lola. One thing that won't be in the new "Damn Yankees," however, is Bob Fosse's famed choreography. "I think it'd be a mistake [to keep that]," Graff said. "They did that in 'Chicago,' so it's been done. His stuff was brilliant, his sensibility was very hard-edged and cynical, and I think what we're going for is more of a muscular, athletic, youthful, sexy movie. We're going to be less brittle, less razzle-dazzly and aim to knock your socks off with the athleticism."'
'Graff is rewriting the script to get it ready for production — and to help get in the right state of mind, he's heading to a spring rite of passage shared by thousands of other die-hard fans. "I'm going to spring training; that will affect the way I write it," he said. "I'm going to Tempe to watch the Cubs spring training, hang out and talk to everybody. I'm going to soak it all up, get all the details right, the behind-the-curtain stuff, which is going to be kind of awesome."' Source.
So, what to say about all of that? It's great news to get an update and it is clearly going to be a big film. I'm also pleased to hear that there will be new songs, as well as old favourites, plus athletic choreography. However, while this is undoubtedly a filmmaker who loves baseball and musicals in equal measure (no doubt a good thing for a musical about baseball), I rather hope that he remembers to make this film appeal to those of us who know as much about baseball as we do about sumo wrestling and thought cubs were something lions had.
I want this film to travel well. I fear that watching Jake Gyllenhaal leap around a baseball stadium while singing a song about steroids might not do it. I'm counting on other dimensions - Lola may provide it. But who to cast? Anne Hathaway has been suggested. Emily Blunt? She's another. How about Rachel McAdams?! Much as I long to hear Jake sing, on reflection, I think the Joe Namath movie may have more to offer. Todd! Prove me wrong!
I am sure that many of you will disagree with me and so I look forward to hearing your views.
Many thanks again to IHJ for these stunners!

Glad to know that we have new songs and the musical is not razzle-dazzle.
I think a musical is more likely to be successful around the world than a movie about a football player. Even having a theme of baseball, he has many things to attract the public: comedy, romance, music.
Hi there Monica! Updating it and making it youthful, athletic and sexy is definitely a good thing. But I think the Joe Namath biopic may have more to it that appeals to non-sports fans and/or people outside the US. Obviously just my opinion but I'm gonna take some convincing!
Today was a wicked day and not just because it seriously is like a scene from The Day After Tomorrow (without Jake unfortunately). GRRRR...I hate days like this...but I do love finally getting my few minutes on line and finding 2 WDW updates! Yay! (And thank you - I needed it)!
Great additional mystery photo shoot pics - can't wait to see the real thing.
I laughed at some of the stuff in the earlier post - those special theaters sound a bit scary - but I'm really happy to be able to go to my local IMAX! (Speaking of...note to Paul...let me know if you'd like to join me for a POP viewing at my local IMAX theater when the time comes)!
The cooking tid bits were funny! Do we know anything about Bravo magazine? It seems the Sun (not very reliable...right? Or maybe I am mixing them up with some other publication) was quoting something from Bravo magazine (just wondering how reliable these funny little cooking and girl impression quotes were) - as entertaining as they are - hee hee!
Now...on to Damn Yankees. I think you're right, WDW, this movie is an American movie plain and simple and not many movie goers from other countries are going to really get it. But I guess these types of choices are bound to be made by American actors now and again - kind of like when there are films made in other countries that make it to some small artsy theaters here in the states for the small interested crowd that wants to see them but no way do the masses attend. I think the whole things sounds pretty funny - but I fully understand baseball - don't know how entertaining it will be to those who live in areas that don't understand it quite so well. The most disappointing part to me is that if this was made 8 years ago the featured team would probably be the Boston Red Sox instead of the Chicago Cubs (LOL at the Lion/Cubs comment WDW)!!! But the Red Sox have now proven themselves so the writer is going to focus on an even bigger losing team than Boston - the Chicago Cubs! Nice weather in Arizona where the writer is going to join them for spring training at least. Still wish is was Boston he was focused on! :-) I love the idea of the singing and athleticism though - sounds yummy to watch! But the steroids thing made me gasp a bit - first viagra and now steroids - it's a strange Jake Movie Role World at the moment!!
I think the Joe Namath movie would be a little more mass appeal but still very much American so same potential problem for those of you not in the states. I guess a field trip to the USA may be in order for you non-Americans in the future (I'll host)!!
Until my next catch up time... :-)
But 'Damn Yankees" is sill a Musical and Jake in a musical only adds to the varied type of roles he has played. He will also be very good in it.
I think that's a good thing.
"I fear that watching Jake Gyllenhaal leap around a baseball stadium while singing a song about steroids might not do it."
ARGHHHH NOOO!! I'm worried too WDW!!
And i agree a Joe Namath biopic would definatley appeal more to me..but i do want to hear Jake sing..its very brave of him :P
Silver
Unless they change that part a lot - the character of Joe isn't involved in any of the baseball field singing and dancing - there's one with Lola and the team .. But if I rem. Joe's main song is "Two Lost Souls" which is done in a nightclub..I think they should keep that song because it's one of the best in it. The singing of 'You Gotta Have Heart" happens inside the baseball locker room..and Joe isn't esp. a part of it.
Hey BBMISwear :-) Good to see you - glad you're catching up. Sorry to hear about that appalling weather.
I don't know much about Bravo but, from what I remember of the original German article, the Sun (and yes that is the Sun!) took bits pretty verbatim. Probably all nonsense (or an amalgamation of old interviews and soundbites) but I do like to hear Jake talk about stripteases - it's a weakness of mine :D
I agree with you about Damn Yankees. And yes that's a good comparison. I suppose that's the luxury Jake has earned now, to make different kind of movies simply because he wants to. Same with Carrey. This director sounds a bit scarey though! Now if it had been about the Red Sox. that would be a whole different ball game (boom boom!). Ahem... Always up for a field trip :D
Hi 23:21! It is indeed a musical and one thing I do know about it is that Jake will be very good in it. No doubt about that at all :D However, that doesn't stop it being a film about baseball.
Hey Silver! It is brave of him! I'm proud of Jake trying these different things. I agree about Namath - that project seemed less focused on the sports whereas Graff seems very focused on a game that he loves. He's changed the original musical so it's difficult to compare the two.
Hi 23:30 :D The song in the club sounds interesting. I hope they keep that.
Much as I'd love to hear Jake singing, I'm not sure about how this one. Mind you, any good movie can be made to sound stupid with a poorly worded description, and vice versa. Both Chicago and 9 had big time vampy-diva song and dance numbers. I cringe at the thought of that same cinematic treatment for Damn Yankees so I'm just going to have to take it on faith that it's going to turn out all right.
Also, Jake is beautiful.
Wow, so much Jake news it's making me dizzy - I need time to think about all of these new films! I am kinda intrigued by Damn Yankees - it is interesting that they are going to take a new approach with it, I think it could work. Source Code sounds great, and so does LaOD. Prince of Persia too - I think IMAX will be more than enough for me. :)
The GQ pics series is gorrrrrgeous tho. :)
I have to say two things. One I'm not a BIG baseball fan. Sure I used to watch the game a bit with my late father (we never went to a game. I'm more a horse racing fan and we'd do that together instead) I do keep track of the NY teams. I do NOT hate the Yankees, but I root for the underdog, the mets.
I DO want to hear Jake sing (I loved him on SNL) and I do like Jim Carrey I think it will be a riot for Jake and Jim to play off each other.
I wonder, now that Jake is doing a sports related movie if he'll still do the Namath biopic or if he even should do it.
Thanks again WDW. I see more pop promo pics. There will be in April's GQ? I was looking at the newstand and they still had March issue there. I guess it will be in stores sometime next week?
sweetpea
HOT DAMN!!!!
Other words fail me, sorry... :D :D :D
Will have to take a closer look at the Damn Yankees news later, busy at work right now...
As a huge fan of musicals I am very interested in this one:) I'm glad that they are going to move away from the Bob Fosse choreography as I don't think they did a very good job of it in the movie version of Chicago.
I love all these photoshoot pics. What issue of GQ is this going to be featured in?
Morning all! Back at work and it's hit me with a vengeance...
Good to see you all - I'll be back to chat later...I'm not sure which issue of GQ this is - I'm assuming the May one?
Must say though that I too am glad this won't be like Chicago which, to say I detested it, would be putting it rather mildly :D And Jim and Jake together is something that would be well worth seeing.
What a rush! But I've managed to fit in an emergency haircut :D
a Jerry Maguire with songs... mmm... I am still hoping Jake would sing those songs topless :)
thanks so much for the news and the gorgeous pics :)
Oh my those pictures are just to much...... I cant stop looking at them, which i need to as this report at work wont write its self - wonder if i could include pictures in it????
Hmmmm not sure about the musical!! would love to see Jake work with Jim maybe in a comedy but i could be swayed by a musical xx
Gorgeous pics! wowee!
I agree with you totally about Damm Yankees WDW. Sigh. I only get really worried about it though when I think about how completely un-remarked-on Jake is outside the US. I think we all underestimate it a bit. You know he is almost not in the Hello magazine Oscars issue at all? Only one small photo with Maggie.
And then, when you combine that with things like the Indy 500 report...! I thought Americans didn't go in for sarcasm in print!? Maybe I'm just reading it with too much cynicism.
I think all the films Jake is doing at the moment are intriguing, but I think he may be overestimating his ability to become a superhero now.
Personally I dont think that is a loss, but I think he might think so, which is a bit sad.
Hi there everyone! Back home after such a busy day... I'm shorn as well :D
I hear the storm is moving away from the NE - hope so... How are you doing, Paul?
Good to see you all - chuckling at Uli drooling over the pics :D
I agree TD that Jake is not a very big name here at all - it'll be interesting to see how PoP and then LAOD changes this. I think Jake certainly has the ability to be a superhero and I think he always wanted to do it but I think there's so much more to him than that and he didn't quite tick the boxes.
Hope everyone's having a good day - I want pancakes tonight - all I need is someone to cook them for me...
