Jim Sheridan: 'You look forward to where Jake Gyllenhaal will go as an actor'. And a personal comment

This post takes the form of a little bit of a time out - the hoopla of Prince of Persia is quickening pace and there are wonders on the way (not all of them wearing a shirt). And so, while I figure out what to do with my two PoP sticker books that arrived today and before we get sucked up again into the excitement of it all, this post is intended as a big thank you to Jake Gyllenhaal - for entertaining me, enthralling me for years. My heart has beaten faster, my eyelashes have fluttered (irresistibly), I've cried, I've run down streets, I've stood up and applauded and I've been turned to mush yet inspired to write, all in the same moment. Without doubt, fun has filled my life and much of it is thanks to Jake Gyllenhaal - his talent, his character, his smile and his fans.

So this hug of a post is inspired by a number of things, but part of it is that I watched Brothers again today, on DVD and with Jim Sheridan's commentary. Listening to this, while enjoying Jake's transformation into Tommy Cahill, shows all too well how Jim and Jake succeeded in their aim, which was to make Grace, the little girls and us all fall in love with this ex-con who wants to put things right. I was going to put a lot more into the post tonight but I think I'll leave those for tomorrow.

Here are some of the things that Jim says about Jake and his role in Brothers, beginning with our first sight of Jake and Tobey Maguire together: 'I miscalculated how young Tobey looked in his eyes and how old Jake appears in his eyes - like Tobey seems like a new person to the world and Jake seems like he's been here for millennia so the audience actually had a hard time believing Tobey was the older brother.'

Walking in the prison: 'You see what I mean about Jake? He has a different aspect to Tobey, he has a different DNA structure. It was his idea, actually, to go to the jail and it changes the movie.'

Grace gives Tommy the bad news: 'It's a difficult part for [Jake] in the movie. I think he's really good in this scene. He never does the same thing twice, thanks be to God. I know that would drive a lot of directors crazy, but for me, it's kind of like... I think me and Jake occupied the same kind of space on the set, where we both wanted to be the centre of attention. So early on I was kind of in conflict with him - who's the most anarchic, I suppose.'

'Jake is very smart about what you might need and he would do shots like that or he would ask me if he could do a shot in the prison, or walking along, or in his room, or lying on the bed, whatever. Stuff that seemed so incidental but is very useful when you're editing. If he wants to be paid about a quarter of what he gets paid as an actor, he might end up as a director one day.'

The kiss scene: 'I think when we shot this I stayed on Jake for hours with the camera, like where he wouldn't do anything after Natalie left. And I suppose the mags were ten minutes long and sometimes for four or five minutes nothing would happen until eventually he kind of broke down, crying, and got upset. So you never know what's going to happen.'

Towards the end of Brothers, Jim had to work with the material he had of Jake because 'I don't think he had a moment, Jake, before he went on to the other movie.'

'You kind of look forward, I supppose, to where Jake Gyllenhaal will go as an actor. He seems to have a lot of possibilities.'

Standing up - A personal comment from me

You know that feeling you get when you can see someone you care about getting bullied or lied about by someone who doesn't even deserve to be in the same room as this person that you care for? I have that feeling right now. It's impossible to ignore the cruel lies that have rippled out of Montreal over the last few days, nor is it possible to pretend that Jake's feelings and honour have not been assaulted. A statement from his rep. to E! definitely demonstrates that this has struck deep:

'Our client is taking such strong and immediate action because of the seriousness of the issue behind the allegation. He would never harm a woman, or touch a woman in anger. Such behavior is not only criminal, but personally abhorrent to him.'

The Examiner puts it perfectly and so I suggest you read that because I find it hard to string words together about this - rage and compassion mixed together with a big dollop of fury have a way of stealing your words. But I needed to say something.

Hi WDW, hope you are feeling better now, watching Brothers again must have helped.

Just reading the post brought a tear to my eye, you are very articulate and what you said I think speaks for all of us who admire and support Jake as an actor and a person, we all want to protect him but being famous has its pitfalls I suppose (and there are many nasty people out there who want to make a name for themselves) x

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Thanks Karen. I'm feeling a bit better but got sent home from work due to me being a biohazard!

I suppose because I'm not feeling too good, got a bit of a temperature and I'm emotionally yucky at the moment, it all got a bit much for me with all this rubbish. And especially after watching Brothers this afternoon, where Jake shines in what is a very difficult role. Very difficult role. I had to say something, not to draw attention to idiots, but to draw attention to the fact that Jake doesn't deserve it. But yes, you're right - this is a pitfall of being famous and Jake has escaped to date but he's clearly upset and that makes me mad!!!! Lessons to be drawn maybe.

So this post was, like you say, to express support and admiration. Thank you for reading and commenting x

aw what a lovely lovely post!!♥♥♥ you said it all better than i ever could.
and i agree with Karen that this post speaks for all of us.i'm glad we have this place.thanks!

i hope Jake knows that no one gave those horrible accusations any credit.it's not even being mentioned in most sites and the ones that do are expressing their disgust over that person.
Jake has this innate goodness&kindness about him, i wouldn't have believed that stuff even if i wasn't a fan.

oh and get well soon WDW! :) *sends hot chocolate*

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Thank you Gretchen - that means a lot :) It's difficult to know what to say or if to say anything at all, but I had to get some of it out and I feel better for it. I am feeling protective - I can't help it.

And that's so good to know that it isn't getting credence - Jake's integrity shouts out - in complete contrast to this moron. My feelings about all this, though, aren't because peope will believe it, as I don't think anyone would, but because Jake's upset. I don't like that feeling. I really, really hope he knows, as you say, that everyone knows this is nonsense.

Thank you for the hot chocolate. Much appreciated! Can you pour a cointreau in it...?

Ruby said...

Baileys in my hot chocolate please. :)

Good post, well done. The Examiner article is spot on.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Thanks Rubes... that means a lot xx But pleeeese, Baileys? That stuff is only good for giving heartburn...

I just got caught up on a lot that I missed here and thank you for all of it as usual!

Big hugs to you and those here who commented with good wishes to Ted and I during our weekend adventure - I'm still laughing so hard at the comment about our meeting Jake story being made into a movie (we actually have heard that a few times now so it's making me think that maybe I'm missing a huge money making opportunity - LOL)! No Jake sightings for us this time but with everything that went on I'm wondering if maybe it wasn't meant to be this time. There will be other opportunities I hope! Ted took some interesting pictures that some here may find...ummm...entertaining (or just plan goofy)! Maybe I'll ask him to send them to WDW and she will share them some day - LOL!

I love the last few posts, WDW, but purposely did not read some parts as I don't want spoilers! I will be getting the magazine soon :-) and just bought the Brothers DVD today so will listen to Jim's commentary soon. I could use a good dose of Jake's Tommy right about now.

On a serious note I have so much to say about the psycho blogger crap but nothing to say at the same time, ya know? Does that make any sense? A lot of thoughts swirling in my head and I thank you, WDW, for putting some of your thoughts here as hard as it is to do. *heavy sigh*

Well, back to unpacking...good to catch up a bit here though!

:-)

I had no idea that there had been any problems in Montreal until I read today's WDW update so hopefully that means that most blogs and goss sites don't want to publicise such crap. I can just about see Jake punching the guy for what he said but no way do I believe that he would ever have pushed a woman. It's this stuff and fanwars and the general level of hatred out there that makes me wish sometimes that the internet didn't exist. People have lost a sense of boundaries and the line between reality and fantasy gets mushed up.

Hi WDW, Very well put, i think you sumed up what everyone thinks & its awful to think that one persons cruel & frankly thoughless actions could hurt Jake so, especially as Heaths name could have been used & everyone knows how close they were - in fact id like to smack that guy, should we form an orderly queue as is the british way - lol Tx

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi BBMISwear! Welcome home :-) Glad you had a good time and I'm sure there'll be a future time when you can catch up with Jake and tell him that you and Ted have only just met :D I loved that in your famous account :D Movie please! I'm trying to think of suitable actors...

You certainly will be getting the magazine soon! I hope you can spend some time with Brothers too, if the laundry don't get you.

Yep, difficult to know what to say... Hopefully see you very soon :-)

Well, you've been very lucky, Anon. It's everywhere! I do have a lot of google alerts due to WDW but even so, judging by the emails I get and the comments here, I am not alone.

With Jake this kind of thing is an absolute rarity and that's why it stands out so much. It's so unusual with Jake. This isn't a problem to do with the internet, this is a problem to do with one moron in Montreal. The love for Jake on the internet is very powerful and very positive. Not surprising - he's a lovely guy.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey T! Excellent idea. Let's form an orderly and polite queue and then... Ahem... Thanks!

Gretchen said...

of course!cointreau for you and bailey's for Ruby :) (aww but i love bailey's too)
you can also have a cupcake to go with it if you want! ;)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Thank you Gretchen! Can I have a banana one? No doubt Ruby will want a weird one like red velvet or lemon coconut...

Nice post WDW - I also couldn't believe anyone could do this either - couldn't have expressed it any better than the article in The Examiner. The whole thing is ridiculous, and I feel badly that Jake had to experience this. Hopefully things will be looking up soon. Better things to concentrate on, like Jake's wonderful projects. :)

boy talk about the timing of this post of yours WDW. I just rented out "Brothers" from Blockbuster today and I'm planning on watching it later tonight. I am very anxious to see this movie and the photos and comments in this post make me even look forward to it even more.

As for what that piece of crap did to Jake I hope they arrest him and throw his sorry ass in jail.

He was looking to start something with Jake and using the internet to spread lies about him. We fans know Jake (well as well as a fan can without knowing him personally) and we know he would never harm a woman or strike anyone unless it was self defence.

I just hope that Jake can go on and enjoy his experience making Source Code and enjoy his time in Montreal

Hi Bertie! I hope Jake can ut it behind him too and yes there are so many exciting things ahead - not to mention the dilemma of what to do with all my PoP stickers...

Thanks Sweetpea - hope you enjoy the film :)

Thanks Karen *)

I think you'd like it, Rubes! I tried red velvet once at Sprinkles - an unusual flavour, but not displeasing :D

WDW, you said everything I have been feeling about this disgusting thing that Jake has to be dealing with. This "person" is a total scumbag and what he has been doing is vile.

And I am sorry you are still not feeling well. (((Hugs)))

Very glad Brothers is out on DVD! Plan to get it this weekend. :)

Hope you are feeling better, WDW!

btw, getting if off your chest should help!

Can only imagine how hurtful it must be for Jake, he seems like the guy who can take a joke and laugh it off, but that lowlife is no joke. I hope Jake's team make him pay!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Thanks so much, Get Real *) I think the word 'scumbag' sums it up bvery well...

Enjoy the DVD - love it (although deleted scenes would have been good...).

ooh, blueberries are good... Gretchen :D Most definitely, though, bananas are best. I seem to remember Sprinkles doing an amazing orange cupcake...

Thanks Winterbird! And you are so right, getting it off the chest does help. I've been stewing... And me too :D

I'm still with a cold, but maybe starting to feel better, also thanks to some hot milk with honey and a dash of Cointreau in it that I'm drinking now :)

Thank you for the beautiful homage to Jake in this post. I savoured every word.

I'm pleased with what Jim Sheridan said on the audio commentary, especially that Jake doesn't do the same thing twice.

And thank you for linking that wonderful Examiner article. I just left a comment there (signed by "P"). I'm at a loss in trying to understand what goes on in certain people's minds, throwing such abuse at someone they see in a restaurant only because they're 'guilty' of being a celebrity, and they call it an "innocent" comment. I'm so furious right now.

I loved what you say, that you didn't need to draw attention to that idiot, but to the fact that Jake doesn't deserve it.

I admire and respect Jake even more now, if that's possible.

Get well soon. Hugs.

Thanks Paola *) I hope you feel better soon - that sounds like a good rememdy. We could do a book of remedies :D

I love what Jim says about Jake in the commentary - you can just feel Jim's admiration and his sense of how much he and Jake are alike. I love that. I think Jake would have got a lot from this role.

I left a comment there too, it was all put so well and it released a lot of feelings in me. As for what you say about Jake - I feel it too and it is possible, hard as it is to believe *)

Definitely a sparticus moment here (I am a proud Gyllenhaalic). Like everyone here may I say this is a beautiful post that gives me a warm feeling all over and that you speak for us all WDW. The fury is fading and being replaced with a strong conviction of Jake's integrity and of being a good person (which is totally assumed on my part but it's a gut feeling.).

Perhaps good can come of this where boundaries will be respected and public figures can be regarded as human beings again regardless of income and status.

Jim Sheridan's work has been largely ignored for some strange, unknown reason, pretty much like David Fincher but it's there on celuloid forever to be appreciated for generations to come. It was an insightful and interesting comment Jim made that Jake taking a 75% pay cut could be an awesome director. Again, a gut feeling that he may head down that direction if acting loses its appeal. Anne Hathaway described him as an actor's actor. Clint Eastwood was described that way too and it would be awesome if Jake in his twilight years after delivering great acting performances delivered great directorial pieces that perhaps could even outshine his performances.

It had just dawned on me the major significance of Jake presenting the best adapted screenplay oscar to the first African-American writer to win that award. This is 82 years in the making. Maybe Jake was aware of the significance of that moment (perhaps even remembering his mom's nomination)and the reassurance he gave to Geoffrey who looked stunned and shocked was heartfelt, joyous and genuine.

I want to watch every single performance this man has produced (come on Nailed ) and the ones yet to come. What an exciting time for him and for us too. What a ride.

Sorry for the long post. Insomnia can produce either words of genius or inane ramblings - take your pick. Goodnight peeps.

Hi Sheba! I hope you got some sleep in the end :) Like you, my anger is fading now too. It's good to get it out of the system and then put it behind. I don't feel this weight now.

I can see Jake doing that later in his life, after many years of acting in magnificent films. Oh yeah - c'mon Nailed! I think Jake was aware of the significance of that award too and he does celebrate in the success of others :)

Ooh, like the sound of that, Twitter!

Lucky boy, Atti :D

Hope everyone has a good day and a happy birthday is in order...

Happy Birthday Ruby! I imagine Jake's whipping up some trifle as we speak :)

I haven't yet got my Brothers DVD, WDW, so I really appreciated Jim Sheridan's comments about Jake. Especially the observations about his eyes and Tobey's eyes.

I also appreciate from the bottom of my heart, your post about the despicable conduct Jake had to experience in Montreal - of all places!

I knew the moment I first heard about it, that it was pure rubbish, and the creature is a sick vile thing. I'm glad you posted the Examiner piece. I hope more people get a chance to read it.
The problem is, we are Jake's fans, and we know this is a despicable lie. But there are a lot of people who don't know Jake at all, and will get their first Jake experience thru PoP.

Those people need to be aware of what an incredible lovely person Jake is. I want this whole episode to vanish. I want the despicable creature to vanish.

Thanks WDW. Trifle, yum! Be generous with the sherry, Jake. :)

spoilers!

I saw Brothers last night. I thought Tobey did a fantastic job, I felt he portrayed a soldier going off to war and coming home so realistically. I felt his pain. He showed just how much combat changes a person.

I thought Jake did a good job playing Tommy. I only wish they would have done more of a backstory about why he was in prison. I didn't know why he was there until later on. But it was never mentioned directly only that he was going to the bank to apologize to the woman. So I assumed he was sent away for armed robbery. Was this Tommy's first offense? How long was he in there for? Was the reason he got into trouble was because his father thought Sam was a saint and Tommy was a sinner?

I wish they had shown more in the prison. Maybe had a scene where Sam visits Tommy while he's in jail just before he's being released.

Jake did a good job with what he had to work with but I don't think they showed the range that Jake had to offer. In BBM he went from having a loving moment with Ennis to later on raking into him during the final confrontation.

Jake has such an expressive face, especially his eyes. I would love to have seen more of this.

Reading between the lines, I gather that Jake thought very quickly and decisively in that Montreal incident. Remember what people have said about his defense of his friend Chris when they were in school? And remember what Maggie said about Jake's ability to "read" any situation and come up with wise approaches to it? The truth is, I would always expect Jake to come out well just about anywhere he went. He's a wise and perceptive soul, but also a man who is exceptionally fit. Who but a fool would try to pick a fight with him?

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Thanks 12:22 :D And I so agree with your description of Jake - incredible and lovely work very well :) It looks to me like all this is dying away now, thank heavens.

Hi Sweetpea - it was a difficult role for Jake, as Jim says, and much of it was all about suggestion. A lot of these things you're not intended to know for sure. And Jake does very well with this kind of role.

Hi there Paul! Exactly! Like how you put that :)
