Jake Gyllenhaal on how Heath Ledger always inspires him to want to be a better actor - and some fun and games

I know I hide it well, but Jake Gyllenhaal is my favourite actor - yes, he is. My affection for Jake Gyllenhaal may be lowkey and rarely mentioned but, as is well documented, my favourite director is less of a secret - David 'is it really possible for a director to be this hot and sexy and talented and tall all at the same time?' Fincher. And so, you could have knocked me down with a feather when I saw the new old photos on IHJ today, which not only show Jake and David sharing a joke at Eden Roc in May 2007 (the 'too posh for credit cards' hotel that they stayed at during the Cannes Film Festival), they show Jake and David roaring with laughter.

They also show Jake's a dab hand at Charades...

... and Hide and Seek.

The photos also prove true that well known adage - do not let a man eat when he has just put on a clean shirt. At least he's not trying to lick it off... (knowing aside to Mr WDW).

Open, friendly, bright eyes...

In this German interview, we are blessed with a new picture of Jake from when he was in London for Prince of Persia and I can only say that I have stared at this photograph much longer than is polite. What a stunner! And I like the introductory description: 'athletic, toned, not an ounce of fat, but not too muscular. Not a giant. He is very polite, friendly, has good manners. An open expression, friendly, bright eyes.'

Q: Were you surprised that they offered you the role?
JG: Sort of. At first glance, I'm not the obvious candidate for the role. That was the exciting thing.

Q: Had you longed for such a blockbuster role?
JG: Yes. No, really. I've long wanted to have a role in an action movie. I grew up with movies like ET that are now classics that have changed the film industry. They inspired me, which I loved. When I started making films, I was just cool. With age, I also wanted to have more fun and go back to the things that I loved as a child.

Q: Do you have a favorite action hero?
JG: I love Indiana Jones. He is THE action hero for me. Because he suffers, and is frustrated, and there's humor - but in the end he comes through.

Q:There are scenes from Prince of Persia which remind me a bit of Johnny Depp's Captain Sparrow from "Pirates of the Caribbean" ...
JG: Oh, really? That wasn't intentional. But I hear you. I take that as a compliment.

Q: What's your next film?
JG: After this I played a pharmaceutical representative in the mid-90s who sells Viagra.

Q:Are you still single?
JG: Yes, I am.

Q: But you plan to start a family at some point?
JG: Definitely.

Q: What does the ring on your finger say?
JG: I've had that a long time. It says Carpe diem (seize the day). It's a kind of reminder. (He laughs)

Q: Do you think that your fans will react with surprise or shock at the action hero Jake Gyllenhaal when for many of them they have the image of the gay cowboy in "Brokeback Mountain" in their heads?
JG: I hope both. I always hope. I enjoy criticism just as much as compliments. Of course, such a great movie isn't aimed at the whole audience. Many of the gamers who played the original Prince of Persia may have asked themselves: What type of guy is in this movie? And I think if some people have an image of you, who you are, what you act like - and then he does this, then at least it gives him an opportunity to change the attitude of many.

Q: Your friend and "Brokeback" co-star Heath Ledger died in 2008.Has your view of life changed since?
JG: It sounds kind of funny that what I had focused on so far that had become so important, became even more important in my life. I refer to my work. It was even more important because I felt that what Heath had done was so extraordinary and inspiring. So I always want to be a better actor. On the other side of me as a human being, it was clear that it's just my job. I think that - mainly in the film industry - there are people who think that they will never grow old, never die. Heath has gone from us much too soon. I've noticed a distinction between work and life.

This week on MV

Sightings show that Jake's visit to LA was indeed a fleeting (business?) trip and he was quick to return to MV. On Wednesday, he went to the weekly film festival viewing along with Peter and Maggie: 'On Wednesday, Caroline Kennedy, "Jarhead" star Jake Gyllenhaal, his sister Maggie Gyllenhaal and her husband Peter Sarsgaard checked out "The Tillman Story," Amir Bar-Lev's documentary about the death of pro-football-player-turned Army Ranger Pat Tillman that hits theaters this month. The film, which looks into the military's cover-up of Tillman's death from friendly fire in Afghanistan in 2004, was hosted by Russell Baer, a soldier in Tillman's platoon, at the Chilmark Community Center in Martha's Vineyard. And a source at the screening tells us that Jake, hung around "to meet Baer" after the screening.

More recently, Jake was seen at Nancy's restaurant in Oaks Bluffs yesterday. This is one of the many restaurants that BBMISwear and I managed to experience in our short stay on the island (we stayed in Oaks Bluffs) and we were there as it reeled from the visit of the first family the evening before, an event which was plastered all over the local paper. We kept our visit lowkey...

Many thanks to IHJ for the new old pics, other pics from links and WDW.

Absolutely adore these pics, Sass! I had a bit of a fangirl moment... I love to see Jake and David together. Great to see you - hope you're doing well :D

Good to see you Bertie :D Thanks - I really enjoyed doing this post - a lot to love about Jake in it :D

"Carpe diem" is for many journalists a good motto. "Jour" is the French word for "day". So "Catch the day" is what they do.

Hey :) Loved the last post WDW, Jake gets around. I love the pic of Jake standing at an ATM, havn't seen that one. Toronto is one of my favourite Jake places too! Not because i've seen him there, but it was where he was interviewed when he answered my question and where my signed poster was sent from :) Jake definitely needs to travel round England, preferably making a pit-stop in Liverpool. I hope its a future location, that would be amazing. Part of Sherlock Holmes was filmed here! I didn't know at the time, RDJ and Jude Law were 10 minutes away from me, i've always regretted not trying to find them.

Love the pics of Jake and David :P Where does Stephanie get all theses New/Old pics from!! Brilliant.

"Q: But you plan to start a family at some point?
JG: Definitely." - Aw, i like this answer :)

On a side note, my Donnie Darko Blu-Ray arrived today! I've been having fun exploring the extras, i love the production diary. Jake looked so hyperactive, it was so funny. I've yet to see the directors cut, and the commentary with Jake, can't wait to see them when i have time. I've pre-ordered my PoP blu-ray! Shutter Island came a week early when i pre-ordered it, so im hoping PoP will come earlier too.

It's so great that you when to the location of Moonlight Mile, DD is my ultimate fave Jake Movie so if i could ever go to LA i would love to find the places it was filmed, especially the first bike scene, that would be great :)

I think it's just about time for a LaOD trailer. Pleeeeeeease :P

does anyone know why he is in MV? is he filming? his family/sister is there too... whats the occasion?

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Silver! Jake would love Liverpool! I didn't realise some of SHolmes was filmed there. I know that feeling. Heath was filming The Dark Knight just round the corner from me and I didn't know.

I love Donnoe Datko so much. It would be do cool to follow that opening bike ride :)

Ooh me too, Gyllenhaalisgr8!

Thanks so much, JF:D

This was nice WDW. I love to hear Jake talk about Heath. He chooses his words carefully.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Anon - posting at the same time :) The Gyllenhaals have a house on MV and Jake and Maggie spent much of their youth growing up there. Jake loves to spend his summers there. It's a beautiful place.

Thanks for these WDW, I love seeing him cut up like he does with friends & totally enjoy life. & the German interview was great. Nice to hear he is getting to spend more time in MV. It must be like heaven for those guys, since it's so totally removed from the crazy Hollywood fastlane & the paparazzi.

Wow, Silver, thanks for mentioning that you pre-ordered PoP, I had it on my wishlist at Amazon to be notified when it was available for pre-order & they changed the location of it on me & I didn't know it was already available to pre-order! I just went over there & found the RIGHT one so I can order it now. I can't wait to get it in my hot little hands! I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE that movie! >;-)

Thanks so much, Gail :) Jake spoke beautifully here about Heath.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Vanessa! I keep just missing everyone : D PoP is available to preorder now and has an official release date of 14 September. It was put on Amazon today I think. I'll post on it tomorrow with full details.

There great pics of Jake and David laughing:)

Any post where Jake talks about Heath is extra special for me. As we had a bank holiday here today and the weather was miserable I watched a few of Heath's movies so timing of your post tonight was really appropriate WDW:)

Jake has always said he wanted a family. Being close to his family it has always been an imporant thing to him.
He has said at least 2 kids, maybe 4 but no more than that.

Thanks for the post WDW.

Loved the expressive pics of Jake and David at Cannes. It shows that despite the up to 90 takes per scene Jake had to do in Zodiac, he and David enjoyed an easy relationship and had a rapport.

That interview is amazing. Jake opens up so much, about wanting children, how losing Heath affected him. He seems to open up far more to the foreign press. I love seeing photos of Jake and Heath together - still such a BBM fan - thanks for posting the photo.

Cheers

Tui

Jake, I love you to death son but you got to get back to work or at least update the imbd page with projects that are not "still in pre production" 2 years and longer. Dude I'm worried about your career. Seriously.

WDW, that's not Hide and Seek. -- That's Peekaboo.

Morning everyone! Great to see you all :D

I'm so glad you liked the post, Carol :) Sorry to hear you had bad weather for the Bank Hol. I hope things improve a bit. It's cloudy here today too.

Hi there KC! That interview with Jake did make e laugh - as Ruby pointed out at the time, Jake seemed to think children only came along in even numbers!

Evening Tui! I do love that - despite all the extra takes, Jake and David showed a great rapport in the behind the scenes features on the DVD and in all the publicity - real affection.

The German interview is a really wonderful one - some great answers. He began with the usual hair stuff and then just opened up. Clearly a very good intreviewer.

Hi Jake Fan! Well, hopefully this long holiday is giving Jake that much needed recharge of the batteries and he'll be raring to go (fingers crossed!) But I don't see much to worry about - not with two highly anticipated movies on the way and the rate at which they were knocked out!

So glad you liked it, Linda :D

Hi Gyllenhaalisgr8 :D It's great to see these reviews of LAOD - I'm expecting great things!

Hey Anna! I must definitely bow to your eperience on this one - hmmm... you could well be right :D

I wonder what on earth they were talking about!

Have a great day everyone :)

So Jake breezed into LA before going back to pap free MV. good for him! Maybe it was some kind of business trip. I still hope he might do the Chilmark race. It's on Aug 14th.

I love the pics with him and David Finchner. looks like he had a great time with him.

I hope we hear something soon about his next project.

I can't wait to see LAOD

If there's any young actor who doesn't have to worry about his career it's Jake.
He will be a working actor as long as he wants to be a working actor.
It's not unusual for actors who have scripts for movies that they want to do, to wait up to 5-6- even more years for it to be done.
Now and then a movie can be done quickly but from a script to actual on screen 2-3 years is not an unusual time.
Have seen actors mentioned for roles and by the time the movie can be made they are doing something else and another has taken it over.

I'm so loving those new old pics of Jake and David Fincher! Jake is so expressive, isn't he, I wish I knew what he was saying. And boy did he look good in Cannes. :)

That pic of Jake and Heath... *sigh* So much gorgeousness.

Speaking of Jake and Heath, BBM was playing on English Canadian public television Sunday night and even though I said I would never watch BBM on TV, I couldn't help myself and decided to watch until they got off the mountain. It was so weird to have commercials. But the worst thing was that they cut parts of the movie and stopped it for 5 minutes to do the news!!! I was horrified! First, they cut most of the "that's the most words I've spoken in a year" scene. Just after Jack says his father never came to see him ride they went to commercial and came back with the boys moving the sheep to the second camp site. How could they do that!? That's a very important scene, where you see Ennis opening up for the first time! And then they cut part of the first tent scene just after Jack unbuckled his belt and Ennis turned him around. Bunch of prudes! Thankfully they didn't touch the second tent scene but after that I had to stop watching, I was so mad.

I knew I shouldn't have watched it on TV. Now I'll have to find some time to watch the DVD, it's been a while and I miss those boys.

Just when I think that little zing I used to get from looking at pics of Jake was beginning to wane, along come those candids with David Fincher and damn, but Jake is one hot man. Jeez, seriously, how can a guy be that smokin'. Thanks, WD&W for reminding me why I have a library full of Jake DVDs and a hard drive full of Jake pics. whew!

Great to see pics of Jake and David getting along so well! :)

And his comments about Heath are always so touching and heartfelt and heartbreaking all at the same time.... Good interview.

Glad to hear he was able to get back to MV quickly and that he, Maggie and Peter are participating in Island activities! I love reading peoples excited reactions to meeting him in person. :D

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hello everyone! Been out for the evening :D

Hi Sweetpea :D The race is coming up - I do wonder if he and Chris and Doug will do it again.

Hi KC :D With Jake we certainy do see these different types of movie - the ones that Jake may be involved with behind the scenes and then the others that are announced and just happen. The mix of the two is good.

Hey there Gyllenhaalisgr8 :D I wouldn't be surprised at all if Jake and/or Maggie bought it.

That is absolutely terrible, Olympia! How can they do that to BBM?? Over here I've seen it with occasional adverts but it's been sensitively done - fortunately nothing cut out of it. You need to see it as soon as possible on DVD to recover!

Hi JoeAnn! The pictures of Jake and David bring back such wonderful Cannes memories - what a week that was!

Hey there Get Real! It's great, isn't it, to think of Jake and Peter and Maggie over there, part of the (summer) community! I hope Peter doesn't get bitten by a tick again!

Off to do the post...
