Love and Other Drugs to open AFI Fest! PoP DVD is No 1! Jake Gyllenhaal goes into a subway!

I don't want to shock everyone but there's actually some news in this post. Not the news that 94% of all WDW readers are waiting to hear - that Jake Gyllenhaal has shaved off his 'Face Pet' - but it's almost as good as that and there's more than one bit of it. Firstly, it's just been announced that Love and Other Drugs is to open the AFI (American Film Institute) Fest in LA on 4 November. Rather nicely, Jake's previous co-star Natalie Portman's film Black Swan will close the Fest.

''Ed Zwick and Darren Aronofsky honor us by premiering their films at AFI FEST,” said Bob Gazzale, President and CEO of the American Film Institute. ”As alumni of the AFI Conservatory, both men symbolize a perfect fusion of the Institute’s national mandate to educate the next generation of storytellers and to honor the artists and their work.” David Lynch, who serves as the festival’s Guest Artistic Director, is also a graduate of the AFI Conservatory.'

'“AFI is where it began for me, and where I return as often as possible, to teach and to learn,” said Edward Zwick. “I’m honored to open the festival, and to join Darren, David, and so many alumni for whom this marks a kind of coming home.” “As an alumnus of the AFI Conservatory, it’s always a thrill to partake in the wonderful festival AFI puts on,” said Darren Aronofsky. “The fact that we get to show at my favorite theater in the world, the Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, adds to the honor.”'

It's been quite a while since we've seen one of Jake's films at a festival, let alone opening one and this is quite an honour. It can also do nothing but contribute to the Oscar buzz and general excitement surrounding the release of Love and Other Drugs - at least in the US. Beyond those shores there's still not much thought being given to it as yet. Please may that change, oh Fox.

News No 2

Prince of Persia: Sands of Time was a huge international success but in American theatres it did relatively poorly. However, today comes the news that the DVD and Blu-Ray release has completely trounced all of its competition. As the Hollywood Reporter... er... reports 'According to Nielsen VideoScan sales data, "Prince" sold nearly twice as many copies its first week in stores as its nearest competitor, Summit Entertainment's "Letters to Juliet," which debuted at No. 2 on the First Alert sales chart.'

Prince of Persia has topped the DVD, the Blu-ray and the rental charts this week meaning that more than a lot of people are enjoying Jake Gyllenhaal and Dastan in their homes. It's a great thought and something for the critics to notice although many of them probably won't. I think I should make it clear that, accidentally, I did buy two copies.

News No 3

Jake Gyllenhaal got on the NYC subway today.

He was seen going into a subway station and was reported as looking hot despite the accompanying beard. I rather like the sound of Jake making his way about a city just like everybody else and I should point out that we have a very good public transportation system in Oxford - brand new doubledeckers on most routes - that is just waiting for Jake to test it.

You may have noticed that a new poll has appeared on the right of the home page - this is the result of the issue that is dividing Gyllendom to an extent not seen since Hatgate of 2009. At the close of this poll, Jake will be left in no doubt as to what he should do with his ever-increasing facial fuzz.

News today was unexpected and so I must put away my laser pointer, flipchart and white coat until tomorrow. Until then, some more transportation photos.

So many good news! Great post! Love that LAOD is getting closer. Love that Prince of Persia is doing so well... And love to hear about Jake riding the subway. :-)

The subway line I'm more familiar with here in Buenos Aires still has the oldest trains. That means they make loud and scary noises and from time to time, you get the feeling it will all fall apart. More than a normal ride, it's an adrenaline rush. I'd love to accompany Jake in the A line underground. He might need a comforting hug, you know? Best thing is that, when you reach the surface again, a lively city awaits. Not quite NYC (although I've never been there), but I promise you BA is a charming place.

And I'm listening to Empire State of Mind by the Glee cast on repeat play. Urban fantasies today. ;-)

Great news about LAOD opening the AFI film festival!

And I also watched PoP over the weekend - hubby volunteered to watch it, that is a record our household.

We need new pics of Jake sans the forrest!

That 3rd pic is sooooooo yummy! It's great to have a visual of what Jake would look like half naked on my couch. :DD

That's great news about LAOD opening a festival. Does it mean we'll get a red carpet? I have a feeling that red carpets with Anne and Jake will be really fun. :)

Guess how I voted on the new poll?

If Jake likes public transportation so much, he should have been at my sister's wedding last Saturday. Instead of a limo, my sister and brother-in-law rented a city bus! :DDD It was amazing, it was brand new, had never been on the road, and my mom and aunts had decorated it inside and out. It took my sister, parents and a whole bunch of family members to the wedding and afterwards the newlyweds and anyone that wanted to go went around town to take wedding pictures. Most of the guests had no idea they had planned this, it was quite an entrance. :DDD Yes, I know, my sister is weird but she's so much fun. :D

Damn, I really should have invited Jake!

Hey Alejandra! It's a good news day :D

Ooh I LOVE to hear about the places where everyone lives - Buenos Aires sounds amazing (although maybe not its trains!). I've always wanted to visit Argentina.

Hi Winterbird! That's great you saw PoP with hubby - Mr WDW saw it with me too but under much duress and he complained all the way through it (I did catch him smiling on occasion though...). And we do!

I think I an guess how you voted, Olympia! And me too :D I think a red carpet could well be on the cards - Jake and Anne on a red carpet together - FABULOUS! It will be wonderful to see the two of the together.

Your sister's wedding sounds fantastic - I love something like that - different. And what a lot of fun :D

WOW! exciting news!!!
I just can't wait to see LAOD!!
oh and the girl who saw Jake heading into the subway is still alive??
haha I can't even imagine how awesome is that, yes even with the beard :)
I've been gone for so long, so I hope you are doing great! :D

This is great news that LAOD is opening at the AFI in LA.

So we KNOW we'll be seeing Jake there and I have to assume that his facial fuzz will be considerably less once he is again introduced to an old friend named 'razor' I bet they will have a lot to catch up on. :D

Well if you want to get to where you want to go in the NY metro area taking a subway is your best bet. Unless you like living in traffic or taking cabs. Besides I bet many won't recognize Jake with his facial pet.

You had me in stitches with that opening paragraph! Fantastic LAOD news, and I'm even more thrilled about the PoP news. I had so very much hoped for this to happen. It's a great thought imagining that many, many people are enjoying it this week, and it's an even greater thought fantasizing about a, dare I write it, sequel. Please Mr. Jerry B, pretty pleeease...?

Currently it's 15-1 for the Razors/Shavers/whatever we're calling ourselves. Take note, Sasquatch. :-P

I did my part for the cause, bought my PoP dvd last week! But as awesome as Jake was as a fantasy prince, I cannot wait to see him as a REAL MAN WITH (hopefully) ERECTIONS (that I'm sure we will not have the pleasure of witnessing)! I plan on having the Happiest Thanksgiving EVER!!!

Hi WDW and all,

I've just voted! Shave ASAP.
.
Musical was one of my votes.
I've been busy at work and home lately so did not have much time to comment.

Good to read you!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Lady Ekster! It's such a great thought, it really is! And I do hope the peope who should take notice. Glad you got a chuckle :D I know, the Sasquatch lovers are losing!

Thanks xxxx :D

OMG Gyllenhaalisgr8, you owe me the cleaning bill for spitting out my wine! That is hysterical!!! I just wish the film were opening here then so that we could all share it!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Ooh my browzer missed some posters!

Hi Linda! Good to see you back :D

Hey Sweetpea :D It's definitely the best way to get around - although I'm certainly not a fan of the Tube in London. Nothing like sitting in an oven for half an hour.

Good to see you back, Eureka!

Oh my!
gyllenhaalisgr8, you made me come back and comment again. ;-D
Didn't spit but my eyes went wide open. Boing!

Thank you WDW for the post and all the good news! Much needed and appreciated!

Ah such a great news about the AFI festival, that might mean tuxedo-Jake? Mmmmmm!
I am still strongly hoping for LAOD to be at the Rome Film Festival even though I don't know if I can go, but knowing we're breathing the same air in a range of ... JUST 5-600 kilometres ... well that would make me oh so happy :P

And about the sighting ... needless to say that if I saw Jake at my bus stop, I'd probably freeze and then pass out. My brain cells wouldn't have the time to process the epic event.
I can't believe some people get THAT lucky, urghhh!

'night everyone :)

Hi!
WDW, thank you very much for all those news.
I'm so happy because of POP DVD sale in USA. At last they appreciated the movie. Better later than never :)Everybody were working so hard to make this movie as good as possible. I just can't imagine, they could never do another part.
Great news about LAOD - Opening Festival. And for us - one more chance to see Jake. Can you imagine all those pictures and maybe interviews?
Another news - a subway story. Jake is unbelievable! After successfully hiding so many weeks suddenly he comes into the subway, full of potential fans and locks with them in the tube, faces them. Incredible story. Like Anne Hathaway said " It's hard to believe". If this is truth - Jake Gyllenhaal is truly a Lion Of Persia, fearless! What would you do discovering yourself standing eye to eye with Jake? Would you speak to him, or pretend you don't know him? If I wouldn't faint or blush(embarrassing) - probably I would smile and maybe say hi.:)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Eureka!

Thanks so much HVV! That takes me back - I saw Jake at the Rome Festival back in 2007. Such an incredible time (there are posts on it here back in the archives - along with some pics of some good old Roman archaeology!). Being in the same timezone is such a wonderful thing. When Jake's in London, I just love it, even though I know the chances of seeing him are so slim. And sometimes I've come sooo close! But you just have to deal with it and moe on and hope for the next time :D

Mermon, that's a lovely comment! I love it :) I've seen Jake at big events on a few occasions and then he is ready to go, but in a non event setting, I don't know... I think I'd be tongue tied but I would just say hello. No pictures or anything, because he's not performing, but I think I would say hello and just be ahppy to have had the chance to see him :)

I have so enjoyed the comments here - I've been thinking so much about how wonderful it is to have Jake around, remembering the times when I've seen and spoken to him. I do hope we get pictures soon!

Oh yes, I loved picking the pictures for this post!

By the way, I've written a piece at MovieBrit about seeing films more than once

BR said...

So...we have crap public transport down here in the south. However, I am perfectly willing to wait at a bus stop with Jake, should he wish to give it a try.

On another note...I should like to point out that whilst clearly most of your readers think J-Gyll Sasquatch Esq. (Jake's official new name. Yup) should shave off that wonderful facial flora, we allllll know that opinions are not created equally. Therefore every beard vote holds the weight of 12 non-beard votes, and as such, us beardy fans win automatically.

Yes, I've already ducked to avoid the missiles. XD

Thanks for the great updates WDW.

Hilarious comments, hilarious post, wonderful news, lovely pics. That's more like it. I voted for the razor. Glad to hear Jake can sing, will give the musical post a go.

Uh oh, RDJ just 'got his' in 'US Marshalls' ;( - sorry, OT.

I think blogger is having trouble? This is 3rd time lucky.

@gyllenhaalisgr8: girl your comments should come with a warning! *rofl* I do wonder if we'll get to see (badly edited) glimpses of that infamous merkin... Jakes owes us after the Jimmy and Jonathan interviews. ;-)

@BR: I knew you'd come up with something for your pro-bearders! :-P Ha, 12 times heavier... by the time we get to October Jake's beard might just be 12 times larger than last time we got a glimpse. *runs in horror, leaves BR in face fuzz heaven*

I had no hope of seeing this film at a festival, but I'm happy with this news.
Of course it would have been wonderful to see it in Toronto, but I think they know what they're doing.
And it will be wonderful to see Jake in a festival again.

Alejandra said...

What I would do if I saw Jake in the street? Well, in my heart, I'd run to hug him without plans of ever letting go. In my mind, I'd like to walk up to him and shake his hand in a civilized manner and say something... articulate. But in reality, I know I'd be too shy to do much at all. Gotta work on that. Gotta psyche myself up for an occasion like that because... you never know what might happen. ;-)

BR said...

LadyEkster: Well, I'm kinda working on the premise if I shout loud enough then the universe will listen and conspire with Jake not to shave. LOL. It works in my head at any rate.

Bigfoot and the Hendersons (the remake) coming to a cinema near you in 2011. You mark my words...

mermon said...

Hahaha, Alejandra! Good point. We have to be well prepared, just in case. You never know.
Maybe one day Jake will come to Poland. People here are not so crazy about him, probably they don't know him too well. He could be safe here, walk outside, not being disturbed, I hope. My country is beautiful. If Jake reads this blog secretly - keep it in mind, Jake, next vacations in Poland. We have mountains, lakes, sea.
Many other things. You are very welcome.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

OMG these comments are fantastic! I've been booted off the Internet now as so late so I'll answer in the morning but had to say thanks for these and the fab MB comments too! I'll answer those in the morning too - good days!

lemniscate said...

OMG! I am in tears... from laughter. My cheeks hurt. You'all crack me up! Love ya!

Fantastic news about LAOD opening AFI festival! That's definitely going to set some wheels in motion...
And those great PoP media sales are a nice rebound from the disappointing US box office figures.

Public transport in Sydney is pretty sweet. Especially our ferry services. Such a relaxing way to get to/from work. The Manly service can get pretty scary though; whenever there are big swells or at sunset when all the tourists on board scramble to the bow to take a snapshot of the Opera House and Harbour Bridge. ;-)

Hmm... If I'd ever spot Jake in a non-work related situation, I'd totally ignore him. Seriously. It's a Belgian thing (Jake who?). ;-)

And finally, "La barba di Guru Jake". I am mentally preparing myself for the inevitable, devastating news that Scruffy has been abandoned for the clean shave. I just hope he nestles it's remains gently on a soft bed of cotton wool; in a nice, old shoe box, and buries it with dueful respect in his back yard.

G'day WDW and y'all,

Have a great weekend everyone!
Another hot 'n sweaty weekend of bushwalkin', beach, beer 'n barbies ahead. See you on the other side!

I wonder how the Beardgate poll is going to evolve? (@BR You Rock! Sorry I'm being such a wuss, jumping ship early and all. Calling it - shavers win.)

Good morning everyone! So great to catch up on these fab comments -I'm trying not to spill my coffee laughing too much :D

Love the logic, BR!

Hi JF!

Morning TD - I know, so funny :D Very glad blogger let you through in the end!

Hi Lady Ekster :D I have a feeling there's going to be all sorts of merkin spotting going on - invaluable of course for our detailed scientific study of merkins which will ensue.

I agree, Monica :D

Hi Alejandra! I think seeing Jake in the street is a world away from a red carpet and I do agree - my heart would be saying something very different from my head!

Morning Mermon! Poland just sounds so beautiful - I hope Jake makes it over there. Or maybe he has been travelling around and we just don't know it yet cos he was in disguise :D

G'day Lemniscate! I want to be the one making the boat lean while I grab a pic of the opera house and bridge! *one day* Beard burial - it will be solemn - there will be tears (not). Have a lovely weekend - sounds like a great one. I have a long weekend but it's a pretty safe bet I won't be doing any bushwalking. I may have some beers though... :D

Hi Lucia! I'm afraid I'm even more elusive than Jake when I'm dressed up in my white coat, with laser pointer and flip chart. I'll keep a look out for paps :D

Have a lovely Friday everyone!!

Please.... no.... no Big Foot remake, please Jake!

I hope we have subway too here at Indonesia..
Thanks for the post WDW...

Oeh I'd love that! A PhD in GyllenScience, what a nice job would that be and way more spicy than my current thesis. *lol*

I think BR's technique is working... http://twitter.com/marcsparx Still no pics though, MEH! C'mon Jake, before you shave we need to see what we're so passionately fighting/defending.

My word is 'fungbo'. With all this merkin and beard talk it gives me quite weard associations. lol*

Hey! Are you pro-beards voting more than once? That's cheating! I can't believe 11 different people want Jake to keep looking like "a crazy mountain man". Not just ANY mountain man, people, a CRAZY one!! :o :DDD Is it possible that we have beard loving lurkers? I admire the 3 people who haven't noticed Jake's beard, when it comes to Jake I'm just the shallowest person ever. Death to the beard!! :D

Hello WDW and everybody!
I found something today. An old interview with 21 old Jake - adorable. Moonlight Mile promotion - http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/mon-october-7-2002/jake-gyllenhaal
Probably you know it, but it nice to watch it. He was so cute at this age. And I like the hairdo.

Cazajuguetes said...

Thanks mermon!
I hadn't watched this one. Really young. And he was already like he is. Joking around with people which interview him. I like that.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi there Serene Hill! Lots of good news :D

Ooh, what a great idea Lady Ekster! And we'd all pass. Jake could be the examiner :D And thanks for the link to more beardy sightings :)

Hey Olympia! I know, gotta be dodgy multiple voting going on. And all hail to the three who focus on what really matters and haven't even noticed the beard! Kudos :D

Great to see you, Get Real! Keep your eyes peeled and have the camera ready!

Hi Mermon! That is a lovely video - definitely one of my favourites. Seems a long time ago now :) That's on the blog somewhere, along with another video I think...

Hi Eureka! Good to see you :)

Just finishing off the post - it's a special one!!!

I think you only can vote once? Haven't tried to vote again. There really is THAT much love for the beard (and you know, I basically bribed people to vote. My mother, the milkman, the newspaper boy...).

I didn't go check out this milk place...but does it basically just sell milk? I'm picturing this wholesome cow bar where you can order big glasses of milk to slurp through cool bendy straws, whilst wearing shades and sitting on 50s diner bar stools. Am I barking up the wrong tree?

I keep imagining Sasquatch with a hairy milk lip.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey BR! I think you can only vote once but that doesn't rule out getting everyone to vote for you! That milk bar sounds odd! We have some milk shake places round here but I can never imagine anyone older than 10 going to one!
