Charming, sexy and funny: Ed Zwick on Jake Gyllenhaal

Ed Zwick has been talking about Love and Other Drugs and he has this to say about leading man Jake Gyllenhaal: 'He's charming, he's sexy and funny. Annie is funny too. I think as well as that people think they know these actors - they're going to see them as if for the first time.' That could be quite a tall order for us but I'm prepared to give it a go!

It's 'a more grown up story - it's funny but it also has a very serious underpinning to it... I wanted to talk about the difference between casual sex and love and how people fall into bed and how it's a lot easier to fall into bed than to fall into love.' It's about 'meeting that one person who changes your life forever, even when you're not prepared for it to happen'... They both need to learn it, that's the funny part. They resist it. They'll do anything not to fall in love but they can't help it.'

Judy Greer has a part in the movie and she is clearly very pleased with it: 'And that one’s going to be good because I saw the trailer for that too and I was like, “That looks so good!” and then I was like, “That’s my movie!” [laughs] I got so excited. Totally a movie I would watch, cry alone while I watched.' I love the sound of that - a movie to cry and laugh with. And ogle at.

In last night's post I included LoveFilm's top 10 Jake movies. Clearly some of us disagreed. And so, after Mermon took the brave steps of listing her own top ten in the previous comments, how about having a go yourself. Clearly, Love and Other Drugs and Source Code may have to find a home in the list in the future, but for the time being, focus on the released movies. I'll start off and remember there is no right and wrong but (almost in the words of Highlander) there can be only ten.

10. Bubble Boy
9. Rendition
8. October Sky
7. Jarhead
6. The Day After Tomorrow
5. Moonlight Mile
4. Prince of Persia
3. Donnie Darko
2. Brokebaack Mountain
1. Zodiac

Congratulations to David Fincher on the release of Social Network in the US.

Includes pictures from IHJ.

I wonder what mental image Ed has of Gyllenhaalics. *big grin*

Oh boy, a Top 10... That's nearly impossible! Well, I'll give it a try. Bear with me, I haven't yet experienced Zodiac and Donnie Darko 'cause I easily get scared by movies. I want to see them but haven't yet found the courage to face rabbit & co.
So...

10) Rendition
9) The Good Girl
8) Proof
7) October Sky
6) The Day After Tomorrow
5) Bubble Boy
4) Jarhead
3) Brothers
1) BBM & PoP - BBM 'cause it's just brilliant, and PoP because it introduced me to Jake and Gyllendom. I really can't choose between the two, sorry.

Hi Lady Ekster! Ooh thanks for the top 10 - very interesting to see! And now looking at yours I want to change mine - BBoy deserves a place up there! But I know what you mean about PoP and BBM :)

I had that mental image too!

Proving how hard it is... I cheated :D But I'm sticking now!

Hahaha! Good job. It feels almost wrong to name a top ten... Most of his films have become dear to my heart in the last couple of months. And I'm sure LAOD and Source Code will earn their places as well. ;)

I'm looking forward to seeing The Social Network, too! Maybe that will give me the push I need to watch Zodiac. *shivers*

It is very hard! Do see Zodiac, Lady Ekster, it's fabulous. And it's not scary as such, just extremely atmospheric. Watch it with the Jake and RDJ commentary :)

he looks SO adorable, the expression on his face as he looks at Annie. OH that I'll see that beautiful birth mark above his lips again, oh that I'll see the handsome cheeks and his smooth skin. Oh WHY did that beard have to take up residency on his face. I want it out NOW, I'm giving it an eviction notice. It has 24 hours to get off his face or ELSE!

My list of movies

10-Bubble Boy
9- Rendition
8-the good girl
7-moonlight mile
6-brothers
5-proof
4-Jarhead
3-The Day After Tomorrow
2-pop

That was a great interview with Ed...thanks for sharing WDW! And Thirty Something...Wow...I watched every single episode of that show! Loved it - (yes, I'm showing my age now - ha ha)!

I honestly don't think I can do a top 10...it's just too difficult. I give everyone here who can do it a lot of credit!

Ever since seeing LAOD for myself I've been noticing something being said a lot (on line, etc.) about it that I said as well (can't remember my exact words but it's in your post, WDW). Something along the lines of it being a rare movie that contains laugh out loud scenes, scenes that bring tears to your eyes and hot sex scenes. It seems people are picking up on this and I think that shows what a great filmmaker Ed Zwick is - I can imagine it's not too easy to get these 3 elements into a movie and stay with "a theme" and keep it believable. And he did it. They all did it...it's such a wonderful movie. (I'm betting it will make people's Top 10 lists once you've all seen it...for those brave enough to do a top 10 list that is)!

Until next time... :-)

Thanks for the sighting, Sasha (and BBMISwear!) And thanks for the list! It really isn't easy but I love to see them :)

Thanks for the list Sweetpea:) And I couldn't agree more about the mole above the lip - we need to see that soon!

Hey BBMISwear :-) I do think LAOD will be a brave combination of all kinds of emotions and it's interesting how he talked about his personal style of directing. I only saw some Thirtysomethings and I had no idea he was involved. Can't wait to see it.

Thanks for the list, Monica! Very interesting to compare. And yes for Fincher. I can't wait to see it. Another couple of weeks to go in the UK.

Okay I worked my head around it, kinda ... here is the list in TOP09 order

1. Highway (that is coz Jake and Jared are in it - which is just not beatable - maybe LAOD put them down on 2 - we will see)

2. BBM and Brothers (cant make a difference here)
3. Rendition
4. Day after tomorrow
5. Zodiac
6. Good Girl
7. Bubble Boy
8. Donnie Darko (half)

I hope Jake shaved today so he can have some sexy stubble tomorrow. :)

Here`s my top 10. The first 3 are pretty much set in ciment but ask me to do this again tomorrow and the rest would surely come out in a different order depending on my mood. :)

1.BBM
2.Donnie Darko
3.Moonlight Mile
4.Bubble Boy
5.Jarhead
6.The Day After Tomorrow
7.POP
8.Highway
9.Zodiac
10.October Sky

Brothers would be included somewhere in there if I could exclude all the scenes in Afghanistan.

What is POP? ;-)?

mermon said...

Good Morning everybody!
POP - Prince of Persia of course :)
I can't put my TOP 10 list today, cause I did it yesterday. It's so funny to see how different taste we have.
Olympia - we both like the most the same movies at first places! BBM and DD. Nice:)
LadyEkster - don't be afraid of Donnie Darko - it is such a great movie and Jake is just amazing in it. His mystery smile. Some people can't watch it till the end. This movie doesn't exist without the end. On my Polish forum I convinced some people to finish watching and they change opinion about the movie. And some people feel strong need to watch it again to understand it better.(Me)And music is amazing. I prefer first, shorter version. Music is better.
And Zodiac, though is not my favourite movie, is not scary at all, and for sure is worth to watch.
Highway is also important to me because of Jake and Jared. They are great together.
I just can't wait to see LAOD in the theatre. So far I saw only two Jake's movie on big screen. POP and Brothers. I'm looking forward to the next time. I wish they make J.G.'s Movies Festival in my city Cracow with all his movies on silver screen!

Hello WDW and everyone

Edward Zwick seems so nice. I can see him coaxing good performances out of his actors.

Top ten movies:
1. Brokeback Mountain
2. POP
3. Donnie Darko
4. The Good Girl
5. Proof
6. Zodiac
7. Brothers
8. Jarhead
9. October Sky
10. The Day After Tomorrow

I don't like scary movies much. Hence the ranking of the excellent Zodiac and very good Jarhead, and the lack of Rendition on my list. I also liked Moonlight Mile, Bubble Boy, and liked some parts of Highway.

I saw The Good Girl before I had my 'thing' for Jake, and thought it was an original and well done movie with strong performances. Then watched it again after I had my fangirl thing and appreciated it anew! :)

Chuckles...

Cheers

Tui

Good morning everyone! What a beautiful day :) And it's 2 October!

Hi Sasha! I love that you have Highway as no 1 :D

Morning Olympia! I absolutely agree - so much depends on mood. PoP and TDAT defy any mood of mine - the others swap and change. But I can never totally decide between BBM and Zodiac - I love them both so much. I agree about Brothers. I just can't watch those scenes and that does spoil the film for me. Yep! COuld be Sexy Stubble day!!

Thanks Leslie, that's the one Sasha listed above - thanks for the link :)

Hi GN - er... POP is Prince of Persia!

Morning Mermon! Your list set me off so thanks for that! I do love the music in DDarko - music is such a special part of Jake's movies, from DDarko and MMile through BBM and Jarhead to Zodiac and PoP. I also really enjoyed the soundtrack to Rendition. Zodiac's soundtrack is fantastic. The soundtrack to BBM is a little too painful to listen to for me, it brings back some difficult memories. I do hope you get to see more of Jake's movies on the big screens of Cracow :)

Hi Tui! Thanks so much for the list. I like that about The Good Girl. DDarko is my version of that. I dn't know if I could cope if Jake ever made an out and out horror film! Like a gangster movie - I'd have trouble with that too :D

Claire said...

My top eight (I'm still catching up on the older films) will be different as I must be one of the few people that didn't really take to BBM, so here goes

1. PoP
2. Bubble Boy
3. Zodiac
4. Rendition
5. The Day After Tomorrow
6. Jarhead
7. Brokeback Mountain
8. Donnie Darko

After reading through the list, it depends on how I feel as to which ones I prefer more. Bubble boy is certainly one of my favourites at the moment!!

Roll on LAOD - good to see that Ed Zwick thinks we will enjoy it but I wish they would stop teasing us and bring it out.

Hi Claire! Thanks for the list - and it'd be dull if we all liked the films in the same order :D BBoy is just such a great film - I may get that one out this weekend :) And agreed about LAOD *sighs*

Darling Bluebell said...

Thanks for the encouragement WDW and Mermon. :) I like the idea of a JG festival! Would definitely attend and in the company of fellow Gyllenhaalics Donnie Darko and Zodiac would probably be no problem anymore. ;)

Aaaah it's October 2nd!!! This isn't just a moment of truth, it's a day of truth... *drum roll* The Beard: to have gone or not to have gone?

Wet Dark and Wild said...

That would be so much fun, Lady Ekster, and also it's a good thought thinking that you have two great films ahead of you to see :)

It is! Day of Reckoning :D

Sasha said...

I just had that exact thought: *deepshortbreath* it's Oct 2nd - the day has come ... what about the beard?? has he shaved?

and then: Why the hack do those twitter-peeps actually don't answer??? I wished I knew if he maybe already shaved yesterday so we'd have a sexy stubble day - maybe ... *thud*

Anonymous said...

jake still has the beard as of yesterday was seen on the subway with the beard. im afraid he will still have the beard for the interview tonite.

1. Brokeback Mountain
2. Zodiac
3. Donnie Darko
4. Proof
5. The Day After Tomorrow
6. Prince of Persia
7. City Slickers
8. Jarhead
9. Moonlight Mile
10. Love and Other Drugs [based on the trailer]

There's my list. No waterboarding, no Afghanistan, only a few serial killer scenes [all of them in "Zodiac"]. I could have made "The Man Who Walked
between the Towers" number ten, but it's only ten minutes long.

Sasha said...

*pft* s.o. said on twitter he had seen Jake and there was a picture ... my heart skipped a beat thinking I finally get to see if he shaved yet or not ...

look for yourself:

so not Jake ... how can one take that for Jake???????

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Sasha! As the anon below says, it's not looking good - but there is still time!

Hi Anon :)

Thanks so much for the list, Paul - interesting. And what a good bunch of movies - although obviously I don't include Proof in that :D I actually thought about Man Between the Towers for my list too - absolutely love it.

Hi Sasha! If that's Jake Gyllenhaal, I'm Jennifer Aniston :D

If anyone's interested, I've done a post on MovieBrit about being in the right mood for a movie and The Other Guys

mermon said...

Hi!
About this "not Jake" picture.
I don't think she took the guy for Jake. She's too familiar with him. She couldn't take a picture of her client, so maybe she just gave a pic of herself and her work place to let us know, who she might be.
So that is still a chance, that Jake is nicely shaven and cut.
But if not, I will enjoy his interview anyway, if I have a chance to watch it. I'm so crave for something new with Jake. I hope that I will be able find it on your blog WDW as soon as possible:)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

I'm not so sure, Mermon :) It looks to me like this person thought he was Jake. People who don't know him so well are always mistaking him! I think she thinks it's Jake because of the 'Bubble Boy hair'.

I hope they'll be something to post Mermon - I'll certainly be looking around, although, unfortunately, I doubt they'll record it :( But, if there is anything, it'll be here!

No Piiiilot, WDW? What will Ruby say? ;)

I'm having problems with my list. It seems I have a couple of absolute favourites:

1. Brokeback Mountain
2. Donnie Darko

...and then...

3. The Good Girl, Prince of Persia, Bubble Boy, Moonlight Mile, October Sky, Jarhead, Zodiac, Highway...

That's not really a top ten list, is it? ;)

lemniscate said...

Oh boy... I've been trying to do a top10 all morning (work? huh?!). This is doing my head in... but I'll have a go anyway.

10. Rendition
9. Prince of Persia
8. Zodiac
7. October Sky
6. Brothers
5. Jarhead
4. Moonlight Mile
3. The Good Girl
2. Donnie Darko
1. Brokeback Mountain (soon to be trumped by Love & Other Drugs, no doubt)
