How Gwyneth Paltrow domesticated the 'gorgeous and hilarious' Jake Gyllenhaal... (it involves spandex)

Jake Gyllenhaal's movies are awash with glorious, heated chemistry. For me there is a great exception proving the rule. It will come as no surprise to you that, in my opinion, this is Proof and the (lack of) chemistry with Gwyneth Paltrow. I wrote a post on it almost two years ago to the day. It seems that some ghosts were laid to rest, at least publicly - although privately things may have been settled a long time ago - at the Elle Tribute to Hollywood Women on Monday night.

Jake generously and warmly introduced Gwynnie as follows: '"Bottom line, she is not a mere mortal like the rest of us," the actor, 29, said in his introduction. "She is an Internet-savvy, award-winning, lifestyle guru, making all of us look lazy. She doesn’t just find a nice guy to settle down with -- she marries a rock star and then domesticates him. She doesn’t just cook -- she goes to Spain with Mario Batali and then domesticates him! She is not just a lifestyle guru, but she invents a whole new fitness movement and then convinces me to try it, and I do it, and I am, therefore, domesticated ... sweating my ass off in spandex, which is humbling and embarrassing."

'When Paltrow, 38, took the stage, she said she didn't have a speech because, "I kind of wanted to speak from my heart." And she was more candid than ever. See more pics from ELLE's Women in Hollywood event. "Jake is gorgeous and hilarious and when we worked together in Proof, I was pregnant and I was a f****** nightmare hormonal mess, but we managed to stay friends through it anyways," she said.

'Since Proof, she said, "I had my kids and everything really changed for me, so I feel so honored that you are honoring me because I feel like I have shifted focus so much. "I have this really great guy [Coldplay's Chris Martin], and these two great kids, and I feel like that was all a process of getting me to where I am. I am a woman in Hollywood and I am a mother in Hollywood and I come from a woman in Hollywood, my mother Blythe," she concluded. "I think that she did such a good job teaching me how to be a woman in Hollywood, teaching me god values, and I hope to pass that on to my kids." Source.

There are some videos from the event here and they include little moments of Jake.

There is another video here.

I had a relatively close encounter with Gwyneth a couple of years ago - if you can call sitting in the second row of the Jonathan Ross show during her and Robert Downey Jr's Iron Man special a close encounter. RDJ charmed me far more even though Gwynnie had a go at drinking a pint of stout. She claimed she didn't watch movies just documentaries. You can read the full account of mine and Ruby's serendipitous adventure here.

And finally...

It looks like Jake Gyllenhaal is definitely back for business as a tweeter from MTV movies this evening mentions that he will be interviewing Jake and Ed Zwick tomorrow. You could send along some questions!

And even more finally...

The WDW GyllenForum Pub opened for business last night. This very informal and small forum aims to continue all those conversations that we always seem to cut off every time Jake heads out to another restaurant. So, if you're in the mood for a chat with some like-minded Jakers, pull up a chair.

Many thanks to IHJ for the pics!

Oh he is sooo gorgeous, welcome back Jake. (Orange is not quite Gwynnie's colour me thinks)

Wow WDW I didn't realise that the forum would come together so quickly, I think it may become quite addictive (like anything to do with Jake tends to do...).

Thanks for thinking of us!

Gwyneth Paltrow always had a reputation for being extremely cold , aloof, arrogant, mean, fake, and very b****y. Kathy Griffin, not a fan, but she cracked jokes about Paltrow's phoniness and iciness when she met her on some red carpet. As a filmgoer and a celebrity interview junkie, I was always turned-off by Gwyneth's personality traits. The poor girl had very little chemistry with Jake Gyllenhaal in "Proof" . Jake and Gywneth were like " oil and water". I was happy when Paltrow retired from film to raise her kids. I did not miss her !

How is Gwyneth an Internet savvy? What am I missing?

And Jake, I'll say it again: you are such a gentleman. The best of them all. :-)

I like the new sidebar! :-D

I have to say I adored Gwyneth in Shakespeare In Love, which was the first movie I saw her in. I also enjoyed her recent work as the infamous Pepper Potts in Iron Man. When I first saw Proof and later read that she had been pregnant during filming, I had the impression that her "nightmare hormones" actually helped her portray this confused, introvert student. So once again, we all take different things away from films. Isn't that fun. ;-)

But hey, enough about Gwyneth. It's sooo good to have little video snippets of Jake! Dearie me, looking at all those flashing cameras it's no wonder he has a tired look in some of the red carpet pics we saw this morning. Having lived out of the spotlights for months and then WHAM! back in them again. Kudos, handsome.

Off now to make some tea... with the image of sweating Spandex Jake in my head. Yum.

I forgot, Jake looks delicious !

Oh Jake, how perfectly divine you are. It really isn't fair that someone like Gwyneth got her claws into you (even if it was just acting). Point is, her dress is orange. That's all there really is to say.
Spandex Jake lol... THAT'll give me sweet dreams tonight ;)

Hi!
What a day! Registration at our forum, reading all your posts, reading two WDW posts, finding out that Jake participated at event, and all this after my job, dinner etc. The day is too short!
Thank you so much for this new post. It's so much here. I went through all the links you placed here. I like the pics of Jake and blond Robert Downey Junior - they are cute together. I discovered a lot of interesting things about my favourite movie - "Proof" :)
Interesting how much director wanted Jake to play Hal. I didn't know that.
And speaking of Gwyneth. I like her as an actress, I don't know much about her private life - what I know - seems ok to me. Like I wrote before - I read few articles about her friendship with Jake. Maybe not deep one, but they eat together, exercise in the same place. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/06/07/jake-gyllenhaal-stays-fit_n_603589.html
I like what she said last night, and I like the way Jake described her in his speech.
Now we know who stands behind his spandex :)If she convinced him, they had to be rather close.
I thought it was his idea. I'm glad he found it humbling and embarrassing, because he looked so funny in it.(and sexy in the same time)I wonder when he found it humbling, when he saw his pictures?

Hello everyone!

Hi Claire! He really is and oh that dress... My pleasure, I hope you like it!

I agree, Jen. I like the odd movie of her's, such as Shakespeare in Love but I can't warm to her.

Hi Alejandra! I missed that too :D Maybe she's always on twitter everytime Jake sees her :D He really is!

Glad you like it, Lady Ekster! I do agree about Shakespeare in Love and to some extent with Pepper Potts. You may well be write abut how it all helped her role in Proof, just doesn't make me want to watch it :)

Those cameras are quite intense! Love how Jake deals with it :)

Hi Aoife! Yep, orange. I find it hard to get past that too. Jake makes up for it :)

It was so many great women on this event! And Harrison Ford ( "Women run Hollywood" - he said) with very funny hairdo.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Mermon! Posting at the same time :) Yep, quite a day. I'm so glad you like the links to the earlier posts! I remember when those pics of Jake and RDJ came out (Tropic Thunder time), they were great.

Jake has been seen at events with Gwyneth a few times over the years and so they clearly are friends and I do like that. I just think he may find Jen more fun :D But that class looks hard!

Thanks very much Sweetpea :)

Tweets suggest Jake may be back on a plane tonight - but to where?!

Darling Bluebell said...

As long as it's not a trip to the Cave of Beard Growth I'm fine with him travelling. ;-) But there's this LAOD screening tonight in New York, right? *checks back WDW posts* The CMJ Music and Film Festival is screening it tonight. He better hurry up then if that is the occasion. It's past midnight here so it's the beginning of the evening in NY... (ugh, all those bloody time zones ;-))

I've been slowly catching up on the last few posts and enjoyed them all! Thanks WDW! So much great stuff here (as usual). It's so great to see Jake showing up in so many places and the beard is finally tamed and looks great - Yes!!

Congrats to you and all here working on the forum - what a great idea. I don't know how much I can pop over there but I will eventually and it sounds like a fun place to be!

I wish I had more time for this and a lot of other things but lately it's been one thing after another pulling me in many directions. I need a vacation!

Well thanks again for keeping us all up to date...I look forward to more as the LAOD push gets going full force. Side note to LadyEkster I *think* LAOD screens at CMJ fest on October 21st which is Thursday night - I'm not sure if I'm remembering that correctly or not but I think that is what I saw on the schedule.

Until next time... :-)

On a plane? Again?!? But he just got here! I mean, there. *is confused*

Eventually, Jake, you will have to land in Buenos Aires. Just saying.

Really need to start learning some relaxation techniques. What if I do get to meet him one day? You never know... ;-)

I'm looking forward to seeing Gwynneth's upcoming movie, "Country Strong." It looks like a good vehicle for her.

I don't think Jake and Gwynneth were supposed to have good chemistry in "Proof." If there was a problem, it was with the way the characters were written. Jake and Gwynneth played their parts with great skill. If any of us had walked out of the theater thinking that Gwynneth was charming and adorable, then Gwynneth wouldn't have done a good job of acting.

Anyway, the pictures of Jake at that presentation are great!

mermon said...

Good Morning!
Nice to hear good words about Proof :) Always. That's good point. She behaved as a woman in her situation would have. I suppose. I think she was appealing to Hal just the way she was. Intriguing, not intimidating, in need for help, with great brain and purely beautiful without makeup. Just to love if she would let anyone to love her.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Morning all! I'm just going out for training (there could be firemen... :P)so I'll catch you all later. Yeay for the Gwynnie love (still a horrible dress though, mutter mutter).

Glad to see you back BBMISwear :-) Yep the screening is on 21 - I got the date wrong - oops.

Waves to Lady Ekster, Alejandra, Paul and Mermon!

Out into the cold...

Alejandra said...

Mermon, I looove Proof. But it seems like we're never going to convert Kate. We're in a vicious circle, where everytime she says she hates it, we'll say we love it, and/or viceversa. ;-)

Good morning, everyone. Wonder what this Gyllenday will bring. :o

Jake Gyllenhaal looks like a beggar, not a monkey!

Hi WDW, I've just been catching up with a weeks worth of posts as I've been away and very busy and: Yippee!!!! the beard is gone. Phew.

Very interesting few days, loads of info. What's this about a forum? A Gyllenpub (love it)! Will head over asap.

Gosh he is such a gorgeous looking man hhmmmmm

Well I'd love to domesticate our Jake a little, only enough to make him mine for the rest of his life :P

Wet Dark and Wild said...

hello everyone!

You are right, Alejandra :D But just think what a purpose I serve - I give all the Proofites a chance to defend their movie! And then I can get at it again...

It's very kind of you, regular anonymous poster, to accept finally that Jake is not a monkey.

Hey TD! Hope things are good with you! Been a busy Jake week and I sense another one to come - I must stock up on vitamin tablets. Gorgeous!

Hi Sasha! A domesticated Jake would be very handy :D My car still needs washing.

Anonymous said...

Jake likes her - Gwyneth likes him - so it seems that's the main thing.

Sasha said...

A domesticated Jake would be very handy :D ...
You have no idea how hard I laughed bout that ... there are many words I think about a domesticated Jake - but "handy" isn't one of them ... *kindateenycrush+objectificationalarm*

Loving the new Jake pics, he looks so elegant. I keep saying it but his hair is magnificient! :)

Training with firemen? My trainings are always with accountants, sooo exciting (NOT!) You're a very lucky girl, WDW. :D

Enjoy the firemen! :D

You are such a gentlewoman WDW:)

Domesticated Jake, mhm, that's very seductive idea.
So today it's suppose be an interview with Jake and Ed? I can't wait.

Hey WDW, thanks for the post, I get my morning post(for my time zone:p).. I wish I could wake up every single day with new Jake news/posts.;D
That orange dress didn't really fit her.. I like Gwyneth in View from the Top and Iron Man.
Jake looks gorgeous(have been using this word over and over these days:p), as always, but he doesn't look as energetic and high spirited as he usually is, and somehow his smiles don't reach his eyes, his eyes look tired, maybe he's been so busy and lacking a proper rest? And another flight?
There will be interview with Jake and Ed Zwick at MTV, should be a good treat, cause I feel it's been a long time since we get a good video interview, IF there will be video of it, cross your fingers!! Have you submit your question WDW? my twitter is still erroring:(
Would make sure to stop by at the forum
Thanks again for the post WDW!!!

Hi again WDW, I visit the forum, but got some problem on the registration process, the confirmation code didn't show up anywhere, there wasn't any column there?

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi 13:44! That is indeed important but not as important as orange being a horrible colour for a dress..

Hey Sasha! I do like to mix practicalities with my gushing - ad I'm useless around the house.

Unfortunately, Olympia, the firemen didn't turn up. I got security instead :(

Thanks Mermon :D I hope we get some goodies from today, I really do.

Hi Serene Hill - sorry you're having problems with the forum. It should just ask you to register a username and password. Maybe it was having a bad moment - can you have another go?

Jake does look a little tired - it's been a busy few days. I really hope we can see video of the MTV interview.

I'm worked out - I'm ready to go home and play :)

Peace, everybody. We're here to talk about what we love, and we do that quite well! As Lorenz Hart wrote in a song, "One man's Mede is another man's Persian." Some of us love bearded Jake, and others love clean-shaven Jake. I confess that I like the Jake who has a little bit of stubble, like those pictures from the recent show where he honored Gwynneth in her orange dress (I liked the color a lot, though I never stopped to think about whether it looked good on her. I just don't know. What colors are flattering to a blonde? I know that Michelle Williams blows me away when she's wearing canary yellow, and yet I don't think that would suit Gwynneth...)

paulh said...

Not that it's vitally important, but I think Gwynneth would look good in red, light blue, and some of the darker shades of green. But not orange. I now agree with the "no on orange" people. :-)

(P.S. I'm not really an expert on color coordination, but until one comes along I'm offering my services...)
