Jake 'the lone poor cat' Gyllenhaal: 'It's just the beginning'

We're very lucky to have more accounts today of Jake Gyllenhaal's glorious return to the public stage in NYC on Saturday night. I particularly enjoyed this opening to an account of the evening by Nathaniel Rogers: 'He’d be unrecognizable but for those enormous blue eyes. In fact, when Jake Gyllenhaal walked out on stage at the SVA Theater in Chelsea on Saturday night, a full bushy beard covering what seemed like all of his face, film critic David Denby didn’t even introduce him by name. “I don’t know who this guy is,” Denby joked. “He looked a little lost, so we invited him in.”' With thanks to Nathaniel for the heads up (with the promise of more to come tomorrow), you can read his full account here.

A couple of extracts: '"[Maggie] would always boss me around,” Jake said, recalling their childhood. Maggie was always the star, Jake an extra. “I did everything wrong according to her. I was always banished in the corner. She’d put on Cats and I’d be the lone poor cat, sipping milk in the corner. Les Mis—when she put that on, I was just like a poor person in a corner. It’s never changed. It's still like that,” He added laughing.'

'Jake often admitted that he was still learning as an actor. “The character is built through a lot of mistakes for me. I like to go in and be really bad and somehow I find myself. It's found through overacting and bad acting, really. I have to act it first. I have to make all the mistakes first.”'

Jake explained his connection with Anne Hathaway: '“I had already had movie sex with her.” Jake explained, citing his marriage to Hathaway in Brokeback Mountain. Zwick clearly felt he had captured lightning in a bottle by reteaming them. “Each of them at this very moment is coming into the heights of their craft and power. That can't be described.” He believes that their musicality also helped their partnership. “Rhythm and music is so important to comedy—and sex!—And they both have that.” “And they both have enormous eyes.” Denby interjected. “That’s important for sex too!” Jake joked.' Read more at Tribeca Film.

Some sites have placed emphasis on other movie confessions of Jake's, while People focused on the age thing - the approach of the Big 3-0. '"Look guys, I'm not 30 yet!" Gyllenhaal cracked at Saturday's New Yorker Festival in Manhattan. "Can you cut it with the 30 comments?"... [But] I feel more like myself. I feel like now, it's just the beginning," he says. "I guess you get to a point at 30 or somewhere and you say, 'What I am, is what I am and that's what I'm going to be and that's all good. I don't need to be anything else.' And that's kind of how I feel."'

And that is indeed the realisation that many people come to at that age and it is the reason why being 30 is such a fabulous thing to be. Obviously, I don't know yet and I'll let you know when I reach that milestone... ahem.

People also picked up some words of Jake's on his relationship with Maggie: '"I love her a lot,"... but "we don't go around looking for something to work on together. I would rather spend time with my niece and spend time as brother and sister." Not that the door is completely closed. "It would take something that I love so much … that I would need her to be a part of, and vice versa," he says.'

Pumped Up PoP

Simon Waterson, Jake's trainer for PoP has become a bit of a legend around here, with more than a few dedicated posts. To mark the DVD release, Men's Health has released Jake's full training regime and it's as horrendously horrible as one would expect. 'We had to build a functional, strong and agile physique capable of dealing with a huge workload and stresses'.

As an example, here's a Dastan exercise you can do while washing the dishes: 'Deep squats with power jump: Holding a plate above your head, do a wide squat (with your feet a few inches wider than shoulder width, toes pointing slightly outwards) getting your rear as close to the floor as possible. Then jump at least 10 inches off the floor. As soon as your feet return to the ground go straight into the next squat.' I feel better already.

such a nice read - thank you WDW

oy I will NOT be doing that exercise, I'm glad Jake was able to get through it. I have to wonder what he missed the most (besides snicker bars) and what kind of meal he had when he was done with POP.

It would be nice to see Jake and Maggie together in a movie, it might happen at some point. I wonder if he feels old now that his 30th is coming up. It's not old at all and he should just kick back and enjoy it (oh yeah and how about we hold a shaving party for him :D)

Poor Jake was bossed around by Maggie. Well I guess that is an older sister's perogative.

Thanks WDW

I don't know if I would want to see in act opposite his sister in a movie. I would love for him to act opposite his bother-in-law , Peter Sarsgaard again.

Thank you WDW for more news about Saturday evening.
It so many interesting staff in Tribeca Film article. We had few reviews already and everybody remembers something different from the meeting.
I just wish we could have it all in one full article.
It was such a nice evening with Jake, quite funny and he seemed so relaxed and in good mood.

I like this Jake's line about being thirty and feeling himself and that is just the beginning. Yes, Jake! Life is ahead of you!
Being musical and having beautiful eyes is important for sex? Hahaha. I never thought about it that way. It's great, funny and so true! Probably mainly being musical :)

Thanks Sasha :D

Hi Sweetpea! I would love to know what Jake's first mea was post-PoP :D I bet it was delicious and big. Unfortunately, my younger sister never understood this perogative... :)

Hi Jen! I would love to see Jake work with Peter again too - they are great together and Peter has taught Jake so much.

Hey Mermon We're not going to get one article so its great that we can put it all together for us like this. That's what it's been like (and what we can do here) - putting together bits and pieces :)

30 is a wonderful age! So much better than the 20s. I love the sex and music analogy too :) Although the big eyes reminded me of the ostriches!

I'll definitely do that excercise during the dishes - when after 10 jumps on the wooden floor my neighbour will be standing at my door, complaining, I'll blame Jake. :-P

Thanks so much for these delicious little snippets. Can't wait for more! Jake, can I hereby book you for next year's Amsterdam Film Festival? I'll happily host a Q&A here. First row tickets for my Jake friends ;-) and WDW will get her ticket as a present for her ehr... 29th birthday. :-P

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Lady Ekster! That would be a great pressie for my 29th birthday! Thank you :) That's such a good year, I feel like I should celebrate it over and over... Glad to hear you're doing the exercises!

Jake Fan said...

I love Jake to death but those pics in the prior posts of him during the October Sky promos, he was such as geek and he knew it.

But now what a beautiful man he has become. I saw a recent picture of Ramona, she is going to be one great beauty. She seems to have gotten the best of both Peter and Maggie.

Oh speaking of rude comments when doing positive articles, I just saw something from US weekly where Jennifer Aniston was voting most elgible bachlorette in the world, the article started of with "she's been rejected by Brad Pitt, Gerard Butler and a host of other names listed...."

That statement just ticked me off, why do people have to be so darn rude. Jennifer just seems real to me and I think thats why she and Jake had great chemistry, no fakeness. Jake has been lucky though with his leading ladies for the most part they all have been genuine people.

Jake Fan said...

WDW you're only 29? May I suggest you drop the mister and go for Jake since you already have a relationship with him. He needs a younger woman this time around.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Jake Fan - I love geeks :) and Jake is a beautiful one. And I do think Ramona is gorgeous.

That's vile how Jen is being attacked - she has to put up with so much rubbish online. I think because she's a sexy, clever, talented, rich, single woman. She's also the same age as me so, although I may be 29, I may have celebrated that birthday more than once :D That's one of the gifts age brings. Choice.

Jake's leading ladies are, on the whole, lovely ladies. I so agree with that :D

mermon said...

WDW :) You could consider Jake Fan' proposition. Then you could write us many interesting posts from closer perspective!

LadyEkster - "my neighbour will be standing at my door, complaining"
Well, if he's handsome, maybe you should try those squats in the kitchen:)

WDW, no question about it. I enjoy every little piece of story we could find here.

I have to say, the beard in these pics from this event isn't really getting to me as much as the other pics. I guess he trimmed it up a little for the event, because it looks 10x better here then it has in the past.

Intones: "And so it begins."

(I always wanted to say that)

So the Jake-buzz builds. I'm definitely in two minds about sharing him, but if he simply has to partner-up: WDW, you'll do!

;D Lolling!

WDW, every night you tell us something new,how do you do? no many videos about Saturday night, but several webs have article the event, I loved in Tribeca film "Who Needs A big introduction When They've Been headlining movies big and small for a full decade that ?"... great.
In the interview I emphasized his humility, the union with your family! the desire to keep learning as an actor and his estrangement from Hollywood.

But, selfishly, something has made me sad ... "He might not always act, he admitted. “There will be other things for me besides just acting, but I'll keep them to myself" Time that we won't see as actor

Hi WDW and y'all,

Loving the ongoing trickle of Saturday's New Yorker Festival... Thank you!!!

"He looked a little lost..." - Haha, indeed! It's a secret weapon: look sweet, innocent, harmless and helpless. Beguilingly blink those long lashed, enormous, beautiful, imperfect baby blues... Get's you everywhere!
"I got rhythm, I got music, I got doe eyes
Who could ask for anything more?"

Other movie confessions: Hmm... I wonder if he abstains in order to explore tantric practices. My mind works in strange ways, sorry ;-)

On turning 30: I had mixed feelings - you pause, reflect, regret,... rejoice - "it's just the beginning" is a excellent way to approach it cos 30's are fantastic! Less fussy, more fun.

Childhood traumas and alternate realities: The Cats thing always pops up? It really must have left a mark... I recall Maggie, when asked in an interview about this, couldn't even remember having done that to Jake. How peculiar? I keep coming across these themes in my work. There are no "shared experiences". Same time, same place, same event; yet the "shared experience" is totally unique for each person. We each live in our own little world. So what's your reality like? Sorry, off on a tangent again... It's all Jake's fault! OT, but I just love these kinds of discussions... ;-)

lemniscate said...

Hi WDW,

Totally agree on how vile comments are towards Jen and other celebrities.
She's such a wonderful person... It's so hurtful.
That New York Post thing has very nasty comments about our dearest Jake btw. Why?! Say something nice or say nothing at all...

"That's one of the gifts age brings. Choice." - Totally!
So, you're 29 again... back to start eh! Gotta love it. Ditto. ;-)

lemniscate said...

Aloha,

Am I the only one who wouldn't mind if Jake chose to take a side-step from acting?
I think I commented somewhere else: move to NY, open restaurant, create charitable condiments,... and last but not least, find perfect partner to love and support all your efforts and dreams.
WDW, you're up girl! You are so worthy, words fail me...
Just promise to keep us posted. ;-)

mermon said...

Aloha
Lemniscate - I wouldn't mind. Anything to see him happy and fulfilled. Just some selfish part of me wouldn't want to loose a chance to see him. I doubt I could have buy in Poland any salad dressing made by J.G. company :) I didn't see any of Paul Newman. And business is demanding, takes time, once you start to do something else and it's not easy to go back. Look at Jared Leto. Stopped to act.
I like to see Jake playing different characters, ageing so beautifully. Movie give us the only chance to see him so often.
Unless he would become American President:) The most handsome in the history.
Let's stop this nonsense, time for bed :) Good night!

lemniscate said...

Hey mermom,

"Anything to see him happy and fulfilled." I couldn't agree more!
We're so selfless. ;-)
Lose the chance to see him? Of course not. The internet is riddled with images, videos and quotes of his professional persona. It's the only image we have of him, really. And we somehow voluntary or involuntary attach ourselves to this "celebrity phenomenon".
I know a lady who is a huge fan of James Dean. Now there's commitment! ;-)
Sure, starting a new business takes time and it's a big risk. But with aging people also tend to shift their priorities. It's probably time for his "Steve Convey's Big Rocks" moment...
How about some day in the future, we hook up, book us a table, enjoy his food and write an honest review. That is, if he hasn't settled for the White House. ;-)

Anonymous said...

He himself doesn't say (that I'm aware of) that someday he won't act and just do other things. He can direct or produce or all kinds of movie things or outside movies and then find a role he wants to do.

lemniscate said...

Hi Anon,

Sure. I didn't hear him say he would quit the movie business. Just that he might pursue other interest... And I'm kind of selfishly rooting for the resto idea. ;-)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Morning everyone - not pretty out there today...

Thanks for all the comments :D And thanks Karmentxu!

Totally agree with everyone saying that Jake should do everything he wants to do so that he lives a happy, fulfilled life. Although obviously that includes doing three movies a year and walking at least two red carpets and visiting Oxford on average four times a year.

Have a good day everyone!

Hello WDW and everyone

So good to see Jake reviewed as being humble and humourous! More of the world getting to know what we have known all along.

I am so enjoying the coverage of the New Yorker event.:)

Thank you WDW for your regular coverage of the all the news, it's very appreciated.

Cheers

Tui

Hi everyone, hope you're having a good day. :)

@Mermon: Unfortunately my neighbour is a woman. Otherwise it would be a good idea. ;)

Has anyone seen the Twitter buzz today? Talking about misinterpreting quotes: 'Jake Gyllenhaal not interested in working with sister again' is all over the place. How annoying. Read, people, READ before you mindlessly tweet and retweet.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Thank you, Tui! I'm so glad you're enjoying the updates - it's so good to hear all about the event and yep Jake charmed again :D

Hey Lady Ekster! I have and it's crazy! That is not what Jake said at all. I wish people would read more closely (or just at all!) too :D

Busy day *sobs*

For me, thirty was a celebration. It really was a new befinning. I started swimming and walking regularly. There were calisthenics too, but I gave those up after a few years. The other activities I still do faithfully. I also bought my first car and my first house when I was 30. I wasn't going to let anything hold me back.

Yesterday I saw "Social Network." There are two major Jake links: Director David Fincher, and actor Justin Timberlake. Timberlake was the rpesenter who gave Jake the MTV award for "Best kiss" for "Brokeback Mountain." Timberlake is developing into quite a fine actor, jusging by "Social network." I would not be surprised to see him pick up some awards. Jesse Eisenberg played Mark Zuckerberg, the main character, and is sure to get an Oscar nomination. I've had my eye on him since "The Squid and the Whale." He has a very bright future as an actor. The movie itself blew me away. Everyone is going to need to see this one. I think it's going to be the short list for "Best picture" at the Oscars, along with "Inception." If we're lucky, "Love and other drugs" will be there, too.

Hi WDW, , Thanks for the posts, hope more will come bout the Q&A, better with videos..
I think what Jake said bout being 30 is true, you'll come to accept what you are when you reach that age, I don't really know though, since I'm not even 20 yet..but I really like the way he feel bout himself.
Just watch October Sky today, I know it's so late..such great movie, really inspire me, it gives me a heartwarming feeling in the end of the movie, and Homer's relationship with his father is really difficult, glad that they work it out in the end..this movie teach me bout dreams, not to give up in reaching it, and family, maybe they don't get along well all the time, but they always love each other... Homer Hickam really reminds me of Jack Twist, it's as if Homer is young/ school boy Jack, he is so cute, with bright blue eyes.. I love the scene when the rocket goes up high for the first time, it gives me somehow proud/glad feelings, I don't know, it's like I was one of the civils that watch it there, the same with the last rocket scene, it's beautiful...
Okay, Thanks again for the post WDW

Probably because Jake came from a family in the business, and i think both he and Maggie have said this, they knows the ups and downs of it. They've seen what it is like and so have a pretty mature look.
Jake reads and he is interested in what is going on in the world and he knows he is always learning in his work and his life.

I agree. I am not even 20 yet either so I can't really relate to what he's saying.....BUT I do feel it is a great outlook on things. :)

Another thing about Jesse Eisenberg is that his birthday was yesterday. He turned 27.

There was a scene in "Social network" where a couple of the characters were using a rowing machine to practice for their crew races. That reminded me of the summer four years ago when Jake was on Martha's Vineyard building up his arms and shoulders for an upcoming movie. He used a rowing machine, too.

Hello! Thanks for the comments :D Sorry I've not ben around this evening. Out watching Gordon Gecko.

I can't wait to see Social Network, Paul! It's not out here for another week but I have advance tickets for the weekend :D

Waves to Serene Hill, KC and Abby!
