Prince of Persia on display

The 19th Annual Art of Motion Picture Costume Design is taking place at the FIDM Museum and Gallery in LA, running from 8 February to 30 April. While it may present costumes from Inception, The King's Speech, The Kids Are All Right and many more but obviously what makes the exhibition are the costumes of Jake Gyllenhaal and Gemma Arterton from The Prince of Persia. Here's a taster of what people will be able to see, from an earlier exhibition at the ArcLight.

Clearly, some costumes are more scene stealing than others while, much, much rarer, there are the very few occasions when a movie's clothes become iconic. Not just for representing a type of character but, in the rarest of occasions, individual characters. This is the finest example I can think of.

Jake's worn a fair few costumes over the past, cowboy, soldier, miner, and he's covered the full gamut of recent decades. I did a full run down of his filmatic disguises back in 2008, although now, of course we can add the prisoner of Brothers, the Persian medieval prince, the 1990s' drugs rep and airforce pilot..

Of course, the pressing point now, is what will Jake be wearing next?

When I looked at the Dastan costume on mannequin - hm, it's not the same. The body makes the difference.

I went to a costumes exhibition here in Buenos Aires not long ago. And I behaved. Not sure I would if I had Dastan's wardrobe in front of me. Just saying. :-); 20 February 2011 at 21:36

I've been to see costume exhibitions at the wonderful Victoria and Albert museum in London over the years. I really enjoy them. In Oxford we have Lawrence of Arabia's robes. I quite often go and take a peek. Ithink the PoP costumes are beautiful.

paulh said...: To me, the most poignant item of costuming for Jake was Ennis's shirt in "Brokeback Mountain." That was such an incredibly important piece of clothing in that movie.

Jake's character wore some nice suits in "Love and Other Drugs," but he also wore *no* clothing at all in a number of scenes. ;-); 21 February 2011 at 16:46

I went to the Autry with my L.A. Partner-in-crime when I was there in November and it's hard to put into words the feeling we got when we stood in front of those shirts. We stayed for a while - just taking it all in - it was very moving. Our eyes did not stay dry. I highly recommend it to any fan of BBM if they find themselves in L.A. *sigh*
