Big catch up: Jake Gyllenhaal in Toronto! Videos and interviews. Plus more...

How about this! Thirty minutes of watching and listening to Jake Gyllenhaal give a radio interview with CBC's Jian Ghomeshi. Definitely one to savour.

And there's more...

Jake has continued to be busy promoting Nightcrawler which opens in the US an UK this 31 October. Playlist have published a wonderful interview that they conducted with Jake during a 'seven-minute car ride' that took place during the Toronto Film Festival.

Here Jake talks about the research he conducted for Nightcrawler in LA: '“It’s like a Batmobile,” continues Gyllenhaal, regarding the police scanner setup the nightcrawlers he shadowed had in their car. “It’s pretty cool how they use the sensors that they use, particularly their hearing, because they have 15 scanners going on at once. The level of noise going on at one time is fascinating. They tune their senses to a very specific thing. They are like animals. It’s got a very animal Wild West quality to it. They’re outside the norm, not only are they up at night, but what they’re doing is so…you know they’re searching for tragedy and they’re racing to it at 120mph, which is not always the safest thing.”'

And there is a little piece about Demolition, which is to begin filming shortly: “It’s a movie about a guy who’s losing his wife and it basically tears apart his life as a result of what happened, but it does it in the most interesting ways, literally and figuratively,”

There is another great interview from Toronto here. I love its conclusion: '“I don’t think I go into a movie saying, ‘I’m just going to knock this one off,’ ” Gyllenhaal says. “I go, ‘I know this is going to change me.’ And I don’t want to do it if it’s not.”'

During the Toronto Festival, Jake attended the gala of Denzel Washington's The Equalizer, producing some great photo opportunities.

On 11 September, Jake Gyllenhaal was one of many celebrities who helped raise funds during this year's Cantor Fitzgerald Annual Charity Day in New York. Jake's mission was to help out a charity close to his heart New Eyes for the Needy. There is a great photo and message from Cantor Fitzgerald here and here there are more details about the significance of this event.

Thanks very much to IHJ for the photos in this post. And finally...

I'm off to Spain tonight for a week so I'll see you later!

Nightcrawler premieres at TIFF! Videos, photos and reviews: 'Jake Gyllenhaal at his best!'

Jake Gyllenhaal and the fans braved the Toronto rain last night for the gala premiere of Nightcrawler, an event that was accompanied by rave reviews - 'Jake Gyllenhaal at his best' is just one. And I've gotta say, Jake looked a treat!

There are also some great photos of Jake with co-star the lovely Rene Russo, as well as some fab pics of Jake doing publicity interviews before, such as this one.

There is a report here along with some video. It all brings back some great memories of my 2007 TIFF trip.

There are lots of videos, including this brilliant Variety video of the cast being interviewed.

A couple of reviews for now: Playlist, The Wrap

There are lots of photos on IHJ so do take a look. I'm away for the weekend but I wanted to get something up before I leave. I'll update the post when I get back. Have a great weekend! What a wonderful start to it.

Nightcrawler to close Fantastic Fest and a new interview with Jake Gyllenhaal

With Nightcrawler's premiere just two days away (it opens at Toronto International Film Festival in a gala on Friday 5 September), there is news that Nightcrawler will also close Fantastic Fest which takes place in Austin, Texas, from 18-25 September. Presumably and hopefully that will mean another red carpet event!

There is also a great new interview with Jake Gyllenhaal in Variety - this is probably the fullest interview we've seen with Jake for quite some time, and it's a goodie! There is more on the mirror hand cutting incident and lots on the Jake Coyoti Diet and Fitness Plan.

'"I would try to eat as few calories as possible,” he says. “I knew if I was hungry that I was in the right spot. Physically, it showed itself, but chemically and mentally, I think it was even a more fascinating journey. It became a struggle for me.” On some nights, he wouldn’t eat at all, or he’d only nibble on small pieces of meat, crackers or kale salad. “When you watch the film and see the angularity of his face, the hollow cheeks, the way that his eyes become prominent,” Gilroy says, “it’s such a haunting look for a night shoot.” Gyllenhaal would run 15 miles from his house to the set in the evenings to stay lanky. The inspiration for the fast-talking character came from the animal world. “There was a general sense that he was a coyote,” Gyllenhaal says. “I just wanted to live that way.”'

It is also fascinating to hear about Jake's preparation to play his Southpaw boxing character - extraordinary dedication. I can't help hoping that sooner or later Jake will get the chance to play a character having a lovely, relaxing holiday.

'“As an actor, you’re constantly true to your feelings and the feelings of a character,” he says. “The most interesting moments are always the most unexpected. I’m not saying it’s a positive thing to get hurt and have to get stitches in your hand. But to me, the scar is about a certain type of commitment.”'

Read the full interview here. Thanks to IHJ for the Nightcrawler publicity shots!

Updated with new trailer! Another peep at Nightcrawler plus confirmation that Jake Gyllenhaal is expected at TIFF for its premiere

Updated to add official trailer number 2 for Nightcrawler!

Buon giorno! Despite all the efforts of various airlines to prevent it, I am back from Rome! Unfortunately, I seem to have left summer behind. Never mind, time to warm up with the latest peek at Nightcrawler, Jake Gyllenhaal's next movie, thanks to IHJ. You can watch it here.

You'll notice from this that the US release date has been put back from 17 October to the appropriately spooky date of 31 October. Fortunately, this is nothing like the length of delays we've been used to in the past - remember those long delays for Brothers and Prince of Persia? Painful...

The good news is that there is confirmation from TIFF that Jake will be attending the festival premiere of Nightcrawler on 5 September.

Finally, Naomi Foner has been talking about Jake and Maggie during the publicity for Very Good Girls. She told ABC News: '"Jake was in the editing room frequently. He was the one who pointed out that Boyd's character was like Clarence in 'It's a Wonderful Life,' who comes in and tells them something they need to know," she said. "He gave me some great advice during the making of this... I can’t say that there’s anything that gives me more pleasure than to get to the point where my children are my friends. I adore my kids. They are spectacular," she said. "Nothing is more important than family."'

Nightcrawler! Trailers and news of the film's special presentation at this year's TIFF

Nightcrawler approaches! Jake Gyllenhaal's next movie Nightcrawler arrives in US cinemas on 17 October but, as now seems traditional with Jake's movies, it will also be showing at the Toronto International Festival - its special presentation will take place at the Elgin Theatre on 5 September at 9.30pm.

It's fitting then that we now have not only a promotional clip 'Hardworker seeking a job' but also the first official trailer.

The blurb with the trailer tells us: 'NIGHTCRAWLER is a pulse-pounding thriller set in the nocturnal underbelly of contemporary Los Angeles. Jake Gyllenhaal stars as Lou Bloom, a driven young man desperate for work who discovers the high-speed world of L.A. crime journalism. Finding a group of freelance camera crews who film crashes, fires, murder and other mayhem, Lou muscles into the cut-throat, dangerous realm of nightcrawling -- where each police siren wail equals a possible windfall and victims are converted into dollars and cents. Aided by Rene Russo as Nina, a veteran of the blood-sport that is local TV news, Lou thrives. In the breakneck, ceaseless search for footage, he becomes the star of his own story.'

There is also a poster to go with the trailer, as seen on Awards Circuit

So, whaddya think?!

Jake Gyllenhaal to be part of Canada's Top 10 Film Festival and an award nomination

Jake Gyllenhaal is heading back to Toronto. On January 5 Jake and Denis Villeneuve (director of Prisoners and Enemy) will be appearing in conversation with Cameron Bailey (TIFF Artistic Director) as part of Canada's Top 10 Film Festival. You can read the details here and, if you're lucky, buy tickets to watch Jake in conversation for 90 minutes! I've had the privilege of watching something similar and I can guarantee that it would be unforgettable. And funny.

This does, of course, mean that the Toronto International Film Festival is rather chuffed by Jake's work with Denis and it is a huge honour for Enemy that it has been listed in its top ten for the year.

The other good news this week is that Jake has been nominated for an award by the International Press Academy! The award nomination is for Best Actor in a Supporting Role and is for Prisoners. While we know only to well how unreliable and tipsy the awards season can be, this can only bode well. It also continues the acclaim that Jake has received for Prisoners and Enemy this year.

Thanks to Sonja for a link to this great interview with Jake in Movie.com. It would seem that blockbusters aren't on Jake's mind right now. Jake also admits to being rather intense when he's at work: 'But I am focused when I work on something, and I think my tendency of late has been to move towards darker material.' It's good to see a mention of Bubble Boy but it looks like a comedy could be a way off still.

Thanks to IHJ for this photo of the cast and crew of Nightcrawler on set in LA. Love this. There are some great new photos up from Elle Man China (one is above) so do take a look.

I'm off to Florence and Tuscany in the wee hours of Saturday so I will see you soon!

Updated update! Jake's Enemy Q&A and more videos! Jake Gyllenhaal at TIFF - Enemy premieres and a first review

Updated update!

This is the video of Jake's Q&A at the Enemy premiere at Toronto and at the 3 minute mark you can hear Lisa ask Jake her question!

Meanwhile Enemy has been the subject of a bit of a distribution battle - good news.

Here is another quite substantial video interview for Prisoners:

Update!

If you've not had a look at the comments to this post yet, do please check them out because you'll hear a first hand report from Lisa (BBMISwear) about the screening of Enemy, which was accompanied by a Q&A with Jake and others in the cast and crew. Thanks so much to Lisa for that and for the photos, you'll find below:

There are more videos from both the Enemy and Prisoners premieres:

Jake also appears on the cover of the new VMan and very nice it is too... (thanks to IHJ)

There are more TV appearance updates:

12 September - Jimmy Kimmel Live
18 September - Live with Kelly and Michael
19 September - Inside the Actor's Studio

Tomorrow, of course, Jake will be recording the Queen Latifah Show for broadcast next week. Good luck to Dani who will be among the audience!

On with the post

Not content with having one film gala at Toronto, Jake Gyllenhaal premiered another film last night - Enemy (I think it's safe to drop the 'An' now). This film has more mystery surrounding it than Prisoners with very little being revealed about it. It does have an obvious advantage, though. It features multiple Jakes. Lisa (BBMISwear) was at the premiere and so hopefully we'll have an opinion on the film from her not to mention some thoughts on what must have been an incredible Toronto night.

The reviews are trickling in although most press saw the film just this morning. Here is the Playlist review. Their conclusion: 'Part existentialist thriller, part psychosexual drama, “Enemy,” like Villeneuve’s earlier festival film, is exceptionally dark, harrowing, and especially engrossing. Those that have seen “Prisoners” can attest to the methodical, hyper-attuned clinician Villeneuve has become in his approach to genre, and “Enemy” has the same quivering pitch of masterful meticulousness. Not only is “Enemy” once again first-rate filmmaking, it’s profoundly unnerving. A challenging, sometimes abstract piece of work, “Enemy” doesn’t reveal itself easily, but its coiling ouroboros quality is fascinating and spellbindingly disturbing. A riveting examination of intimacy (and the lack thereof), identity, duality and the nether regions of our unconscious desires, “Enemy” is a transfixing grand slam that certifies Villeneuve as the real deal and one of the most exciting new voices in cinema today.' Excellent.

Although this post is dedicated to Enemy, there is another interesting interview with Jake here to do with Prisoners. There are also some portraits which you can see at IHJ. My favourite is below.

No doubt this post will be updated, so do check back! Thanks to IHJ for the lovely photos.

Huge updates! Press conference, premiere and interviews - Prisoners - Jake Gyllenhaal at Toronto International Film Festival 2013

Update! Press conference and premiere

Watch the Prisoners Press conference:

There's a bit of a run through of some things from the conference here. And some photos from the conference - in which Jake admitted to the appeal of Maple syrup.

Hugh Jackman has posted some wonderful photos of himself and Jake at the premiere last night. Hugh described Jake as 'not only a great actor but a great mate'. Here are a couple:

From Warner Brothers:

TIFF always produces some great stories and here is a priceless one - being in a lift with Jake. IT could be awkward.... Not that Jake is phased at all.

These videos from the premiere bring back some big memories for me!

There are more interviews too, including the latest by old favourite Jake Hamilton.

Jake has confirmed to Variety that his next films are Nightcrawler and Everest.

That'll do for now so...

On with the original post

Tonight, Jake Gyllenhaal will walk the red carpet at the Elgin Theatre in Toronto for the festival premiere of Prisoners. It's been a while but at last a new Gyllenmovie is about to be unleashed on audiences amidst the glitz, exuberance and sheer fun of TIFF.

Incidentally, Brokeback Mountain was presented at the Elgin Theatre. It's a wonderful place (I saw Brad Pitt's hand there during my 2007 TIFF adventure) and the perfect setting for a film that is getting the most fantastic of reviews. We're used to good reviews from critics for Jake's work but this looks to be one of those films where the reviews could translate into bums on seats.

Of course, later in the festival, Jake will be presenting (An) Enemy but this post will focus on Prisoners and it will be updated.

The Prisoners press conference takes place on 7 September at 4pm (UK time). It will live stream on YouTube here. Thanks very much to BBMISwear for finding this!

Jake and Hugh Jackman have been doing a lot of publicity for Prisoners in Toronto already - on paper and on video (testified to by some excited journalist tweets), all coming on top of Jake's appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman earlier this week. I'll add interesting links and videos as I come across them over the next day or two but here are a few to keep us going. The new poster for Prisoners above is the UK quad poster - I like it (here via Total Film). Here is a selection of video interviews - some videos may take a while to load:

If the below video doesn't work for you, you can see it here at City News.

Thanks so much to IHJ for their amazing help with videos.

In this interview with the Montreal Gazette Denis Villeneuve discusses the film and his relationship with the actors. On Jake - who, of course, also features in another movie by the director this season - 'We very quickly bonded,” Villeneuve said. “We had a lot of things in common, as artists and men. We became, very quickly, close friends. Our relationship is born out of the will to see the truth and be authentic. We’re super straightforward (with each other), like brothers.'

In USA Today, Jake discusses 2013: "This year, for me personally, has been such an incredible journey," says Gyllenhaal. "What I've learned and taken away is just incredible. I don't think anybody expected anything. I was just so satisfied by this process. But I have to say, I do think it's probably too early to talk about that."

An onset interview and behind the scenes or promo spots

Trailer Addict has a whole host of clips and interviews from Prisoners. You can see those all here - again, thank you so much Stephanie.

Jake and Hugo will also appear together (at least I think it's together) on the Katie Show.

Some reviews:
Huffington Post
Film School Rejects
Maclean's

As for the US premiere, we hear in a tweet: 'Prisoners premieres at the Regency Village Theatre in Westwood on 9/12 at 6:30! Hugh Jackman, Jake Gyllenhaal, cast & filmmakers attending!' I'll post info on any UK and European premieres when I hear it. If you hear anything, do please let us know so that I can post it.

As mentioned, this post will be updated so do keep checking back! If you're fortunate enough to be in Toronto with the stars - have a fabulous time! I had the time of my life there and I can only wish you the same.

**Updated** New photos, including new Prisioners stills and Atticus! An Enemy joins Prisoners at Toronto and a WDW Paris Interlude

**Update!** Thanks to IHJ, we not only have new stills from prisoners we are also reunited with a long missed four legged friend - Atticus! It's been far too long. You would be forgiven for not recognising him though as Jake has put him in disguise.

On with the post...

I'm back! The holiday season has been doing its best to keep me off line, taking me first to North Wales in a tent and then off to Paris for a few days for my very first visit to the City of Lights (Interlude below). Meanwhile, Jake Gyllenhaal has been keeping himself busy flitting between Los Angeles and NYC and Los Angeles. Thanks to IHJ for the photos of him over the last couple of weeks, including a new still from Prisoners.

The good news on the festival front is that (An) Enemy has now been added to the line up, which already included Prisoners, for Toronto  as one of its Special Presentations. More details here. So looks like Jake will be very busy - reminding me of the days when Jake promoted Brokeback Mountain, Jarhead and Proof at the same time - sometimes even in the same sentence.

Thanks very much to BBMISwear for the scan here from Entertainment Weekly as the promotion for Prisoners slowly begins to make a move.

Meanwhile, looking back to Love and Other Drugs, the real life Jamie (Reidy) has been recalling what it was like to be brought to life on screen by Jake Gyllenhaal.

'What was your reaction when you learned Jake Gyllenhaal was going to play your character? My reaction was “No. Way!” Sure, I’d heard his name mentioned, but I tried not to get my hopes up. My best female friend from high school had suggested Danny Devito play me, so, yeah, I was pretty psyched with Jake.

Are there any downsides to being portrayed on the big screen? Not for me! On set, a few of the veteran crew members pulled me aside to make sure I appreciated my good fortune. They’d point at Jake and say, “You just don’t get to have that guy play you, not while you’re still alive, anyway.” Having Jake play me in a movie was the coolest thing that ever happened to anybody I know, or anybody that anybody I know knows.

Did Jake Gyllenhaal hang out with you in order to learn more about his character and your personality? Yep. Jake and I hung out three times, which gave him the chance to ask me all of his questions about pharmaceutical sales and how/why doctors and nurses would interact with drug reps in the first place. (Good question.) It also gave me the chance to see that Jake is a smart, funny guy who takes his job seriously. I liked him a lot.'

WDW Paris Interlude

My trip to Paris was all too brief but a lot was packed in. Top of the highlights was the stunning 12th-century Sainte Chapelle, built to house the relics that St Louis brought back from crusade. Next to it is the Conciergerie, once a royal palace that was converted into a prison that held the victims of the French Revolution, including Marie Antoinette. Then there's the Notre Dame gargoyles, the Roman remains beneath the streets, the Louvre pyramid and a certain tower as well as possibly the most famous cemetery in the world, Pere Lachaise. Here are just a few pictures.

I was very chuffed to discover the location from Midnight in Paris where Gil meets his ride to the past each night at midnight. Just at the back of the Pantheon.
