Jake: 'I wish those people could spend a day with me'

My copy of Mario Testino's Let Me In arrived in the wee hours of the morning and it is a book full of treats. In addition to the pictures posted here and across the net yesterday, I wanted to show you these. Firstly, there is the full picture of Jake kissing Kirsten (taken in Los Angeles in 2003), then there's Kirsten playing with Atticus (Los Angeles, 2004) and, finally, Heath and Helena Christensen (Los Angeles, 2006). Sadly, that's the only picture of Heath. (Forgive the quality of these pictures - I couldn't scan them without damaging the book.)

As for Mario Testino's photography, Nicole Kidman describes it in these terms: 'Among his many gifts is the ability to capture something about the sitter's essence, an immediacy, a shared moment. What's more he also makes you feel special, which is a lovely way to feel, especially under the scrutiny of a camera lens.'

Jake's take on Donnie

Along with Let Me In, I also received, at long last, a copy of Richard Kelly's The Donnie Darko Book. Many of you will have read Jake's foreward but it was new to me and I wanted to share a little bit of it here because it tells us something about Jake as well as about one of the most demanding and rewarding films ever made.

Jake: 'What is Donnie Darko about? I have no idea, at least not a conscious one. But somehow I've always understood it. The most amazing thing about making this movie, for me, was that no one - including the man from whose mind it emerged - ever had a simple answer to this question. And that, ironically, is the very thing the film is about. There is no single answer to any question. Every person's explanation differs according to how they were brought up, where they were brought up, who brought them up. This seems like a very simple answer to a perplexingly complex movie, but when you think about it, it gets to the very crux of what we all seem to take for granted: our own minds, how they differ, and that we are all entitled to our own interpretation.'

'When we were working, I would beg and plead with Richard to find one through-line and an understandable conclusion. He never would. Some could argue that this was detrimental to the film. And it might be to any other film. And there are those who would say that it was to this one. But I wish those people could spend a day with me sometime. So they could sit at a meal, or walk down the street when a total stranger walks up and starts a philosphical discussion about what eactly Donnie Darko is about. It makes my day every time. Because every time, I answer, 'I have no idea, what does it mean to you?''

At the moment, as we have discussed several times (and at least one of us has seen!), a stage production of Donnie Darko is playing near Boston. Here is a new review.

Another important review of Rendition

Today, the greatly respected journalist Robert Fisk gave his opinion of Rendition in The UK's Independent newspaper for which he is Middle East correspondent (there are spoilers in the review itself - although none here - so be warned before you click the link below). It is an extremely positive review of Rendition, which, although possibly published too late, is another example of acclaim from someone whose opinion is worth listening to.

'At university, we male students used to say that it was impossible to take a beautiful young woman to the cinema and concentrate on the film. But in Canada, I've at last proved this to be untrue. Familiar with the Middle East and its abuses – and with the vicious policies of George Bush – we both sat absorbed by Rendition, Gavin Hood's powerful, appalling testimony of the torture of a "terrorist suspect" in an unidentified Arab capital after he was shipped there by CIA thugs in Washington.'

'So is truth stranger than fiction? Or is Hollywood waking up – after Syriana and Munich – to the gross injustices of the Middle East and the shameless and illegal policies of the US in the region? Go and see Rendition – it will make you angry – and remember Arar. And you can take a beautiful woman along to share your fury.'

There are SPOILERS in the article so know that before you click on this link.

And finally... A small world

Natalie Portman is showing herself to be an actor driven by a compulsion to find the roles and films that matter and, if the films aren't there, she is prepared to produce and now even direct them herself. Incidentally, I think this bodes well for Brothers. Variety this week revealed that Natalie has signed 'a two-year production deal with Participant Prods. for her newly formed Handsomecharlie Films shingle. Banner's first project is "A Tale of Love and Darkness," on which Portman plans to make her feature helming debut.' The story is based on 'on the bestselling memoir of Amos Oz' and follows the formation of the Jewish state of Israel. Showing yet again what a small world this is, Jake's mother Naomi Foner is 'in negotiations to adapt the screenplay. That project, however, is not set up at Participant.'

Hello WDW, gosh what a great array of Jake goodness today!

Thanks for posting further pics from the Mario Testino book, they are gorgeous. I adore the big version of Jake and Kirsten and Kirsten with Atticus (although I was kind of distracted by what she was wearing. Some old-fashioned bodice?), they are really very sweet and lovely.

(Can I mention how much I loved the pic of Heath with Helena Christensen, it looks like that was taken during the BBM award season frenzy, is that right? Shame there aren't more of Heath, me being a huge fan).

Oh and those pics of Jake and Natalie Portman are so good too. They looked great together, not that I know if they ever were, but they certainly look very happy to be together.

I love Donnie Darko too and I remember how blown away I was when I saw it for the first time. The DD book is great, and the interview with Richard Kelly really interesting. I adore Jake's introduction...does he have any idea the affect such an invitation as "I wish those people could spend a day with me" has on people? Obviously not.

Thanks for all the great Jake treats you give us daily. I really love coming here.

Hi Christie - hope you're having a good Saturday. It souns like a gunpowder factry round ehre tonight there are so many fireworks going off...

I'm so glad you liked the post and didn't mind more pictrues from the book. I just love the Kirsten pics - and yes, that's some outfit! In another picture, Kirsten is shown sitting at a table (at another do) and there's the top of a head just visible next to her and I'm sure that's Jake (I recognise the hair cut)! I'd have posted it but I thought that was too tenuous a link... :D

I don't know where the Heath picture was taken but I'm sure you're right. I wish there had been more of him.

Natalie and Jake always look good together and I'm glad that he'll be making Brothers with such a good friend.

The Richard Kelly interveiw is very interesting - I can't get over how young he was when he wrote it. And Jake's intro is fabulous - Britney is hot, Spielberg rocks - great stuff. I love how Jake can be intense but he can also appreciate that he shouldn't take it all too seriously. And what an invitation! It's good to hear that it makes his day (at least back then) to be asked about DDarko. but he's referred to that since - that his smart fans still ask him about it - and I think he's proud to have been a part of this great film.

Great stuff. Sounds like the DD play is good, but Jake will always be DD to me.

Saw the Mario Testino book at Barnes & Noble. Will be ordering it from Amazon as it is cheaper. Anyway, great pics that you posted WDW. I also liked the pic of Jake and Richard Gere. Overall a great book.

And yes it is a small world with Nataile and Naomi. I can't wait to see Jake and Natalie in Brothers.

I'm hearing fireworks everywhere tonight too! Imagine what it will be like on Monday - it's not like it was when I was a kid, I used to be happy with some sparklers!!

Oh yeah, Jake is great at being intense and conveying his unserious side too. (is unserious a word?). His commentary on the DD dvd is great too...I could listen to him read the telephone book and I'd be happy.

I think he'll always be proud of DD, and so he should be, its an extremely original and clever film. I liked too how he defended Bubble Boy to Jon Stewart in that interview he gave for Moonlight Mile. Good for him.

Hi Get Real - I got the book from Amazon and it took just a day - couldn't believe it (he postman ringing the doorbell disurbed me from a very pleasant Jake dream :D). It's very cheap for such a stunning book. I really do like the Angelina photos too. I just hope we don't have too wait too long for Brothers.

Christie - I keep jumping out of my skin with the fireworks :( I love Jake's commentary on DDarko (can't wait for the Zodiac commentary) - Jake is a master at entertaining and informing at the same time - just a great communicator. I'm glad Jake defended Bubble Boy too - there's nothing wrong with that film and, again, the commentary is such a joy to listen to.

so weary tonight and out of wine but will post thanks for a wonderful "column" with some of my favorites - Robert Fisk, for instance, and Richard Kelly - I am so pleased the stage version apparently came off - it's a great story.

and I guess we can mention Heath, there's a very nice piece in NYT today about HL.

I will admit - as much as I ADORE Jake and he is The Sex and The Precious etcetcetc I would teach him how to kiss in a diffrent way -he SMOOCHES - it would be my pleasure to be his teacher in this matter.

Good news about Natalie Portman. She's a smart cookie and I think = oh dear, I think Id better hit the sack, Im sleeping on my feet like a horse. . . .

Hey Sleepy Pia - thanks for commenting despite being so tired *)

I saw the piece about Heath and was going to post it tonight but there ws too much going on so I'll put it up tomorrow. It's funny you should say that about Jake and his kisses, I was thinking something very similar when I saw Rendition today. The scene is so hot but I think a different kind of kiss was required. Get off to bed Pia and I hope to speak to you tomorrow :)

Honestly I always thought JG would wind up with either NP or Scarlet Johansson myself. Guess I was wrong, but who's to know in the end.

I think that's what intrigues me about Jake, he's so unpredictable, just when I anticipate something about him he throws me off course. Exactly like his discription about DD, I think people expect answers to everything when alot of times there doesn't have to be an answer at all. Some things are better left alone.

WDW, I can't wait for your post about Heath, he was my first true love even before Jake I have to admit.

Geez, I wish I had that probelm, fireworks going off outside my window :*

Hi CWG - I think what you say is very true. The fact that Jake can be so enigmatic and be something for everyone is definitely part of the appeal. Sometimes there is no yes or no. Jake is definitely intriguing and I love that :) I also love that his fans are so smart.

You loved Heath before Jake? That's interesting. I'd love to hear what made you switch. It's Guy Fawkes night here in the UK on Monday but all the big parties are tonight and, as it's such a beautiful night tonight, lots and lots of bright lights and loud noises!

Nothing changed really, I just added Jake to the love. I began with Heath after I saw Brothers Grimm, I thought he was truly amazing in that movie, please see it if you haven't.

I became interested in Jake after I saw him in Jarhead. BBM was heaven for me to see them both together. I still love Heath and look forward to seeing all his new stuff, I think he is incredibly talented and handsome. I feel an unspeakable connection with him.

We have yet to see JG and HL greatest work.

chillinwitgyllen said...

WDW, I cheated and looked up the NYT article about Heath online. Sorry, I couldn't wait and afterall it is Heath.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

CWG I haven't seen Brothers Grimm but I definitely will now - I'll make a point of it and very soon. Both Heath and Jake are so young, I find it wonderful thinking about what may be in store for us from both fine actors. Thanks for that comment :)

chillinwitgyllen said...

Also see Cazanova and Candy, two other amazing performances. You too will soon be addicted. It's getting late for me and especially you, good nite.

chillinwitgyllen said...

WDW, one more thing, see you had to get me started didn't ya.

I'm more romantically connected to Heath and personally connected to Jake (although I think he's also totaly hot). I have a twin brother whom I'm very close with and I can appreciate the love Jake has for his sister and family and how grounded he is. I feel like I know him because I'm the female version of him. I don't know him personally but I feel like I do. We are very similar creatures in many different ways.

That's my explanation for all this Jake obsession and being a part of this great place you have here. I felt I needed to explain myself.

Beautiful photos from Let me in. I didn't know that Heath knew Helena from 2006. they say he is dating her now, but I'm not sure

Great column today, WDW!!! Totally excellent! I agree, that picture of Heath looks like it was taken at one of the awards season events...like Oscar, Golden Globes or SAGS? Testino's book looks very interesting. Thanks SO much for the pics!
I adore Donnie Darko! Never have watched a movie quite as captivating. And I watch it often.

Jake and Natalie have been close for years. I've seen pictures of them when they were 15, 16 respectively, or not too much older.I'm almost positive they date for a short while when Jake was 19, 20. Natalie's a year younger.I think she was his first semi-serious girlfriend before Kirsten. But they were definitely kids. She went on to Harvard and then went back to Israel to school for at least six months before she resumed her acting career. She was close to Maggie, growing up. I saw pictures of Nat and Maggie where Nat looked about 12 years old. She is definitely a much loved family friend. (BTW: Reese has also been trying to come up with a project to do with Naomi for about four years.)

What a great post you made today WDW. So many things to read! Thank you!

Due to Rendition viewing..and fireworks...I'm reading this late.

Lucky you having that Mario Testino book already. That was a very sweet picture of Jake and Kirsten, and isn't it strange how we have ALL watched Jake's kissing technique quite closely...I wonder why that is..hehehe

It's certainly going to be good seeing Jake and Natalie Portman together in Brothers. I can't wait for it. I like her, and I think her long term friendship with Jake is so very sweet. It will be a great partnership on the screen I'm sure.

I so love Jake's DD introduction, and should I ever be lucky enough to meet him, I would sure LOVE to get him into a conversation about it!! Not only is he beautiful, but he is also a very interesting guy.

And thank you for the Robert Fisk Rendition review. That was a very interesting piece.

And finally, I just love the bottom picture of Jake and Natalie!

Morning everyone! Running late today due to the new pics.

CWG - thanks so much for sharing that with us - Heath is special to a so many of us too and that's why he'll always have a place on WDW.

Hi Trekfan! I didn't know that about Heath and Helen - I must walk around with my eyes closed.

Bobbyanna - that's very interesting about Natalie. She's another of those people that feels like part of the 'family', along with Heath. I am looking forward so much to seeing them act together.

Hi Rosie - that sounds like a good evening :D Beautiful and interesting - I bet he's one of those people who would always put someone at ease in a conversation. I love pics of Jake with Natalie too :)
