Jake Gyllenhaal's superhero adventure continues

Edited to add: There is a corker of a Jake Gyllenhaal April Fool springing and creeping around the net today. Enjoy!

One of the things that I find a lot of fun about following an actor is the speculation about forthcoming projects. This is especially true when you follow Jake Gyllenhaal, because he has reached that point in his career when really he could do just about anything and could go off in any kind of direction, mixing it up to varying degrees, constantly surprising, possibly making us scratch our heads when we hear of some roles, but delivering performances he believes in, in projects he believes in.

The rumours that pop up now and again about Jake's future roles are fascinating - sometimes they even turn out to be true even if the rumour tag hangs on to the last minute (Nailed, of course). Others, such as The Unnamed Moon Project, are announced early on and then kind of fade away, disappointingly to a scifi fan such as myself, at least for the time being. The Joe Namath project was another surprise and, at this stage, seems a long way off (just as well, maybe, with Jake's poor ankle as it is).

Other rumours have fallen by the wayside - mostly and strangely coincidentally involving superheroes - Superman, Spider-Man, the Green Hornet, one half of the Wonder Twins (with Maggie) in the Justice League of America, even Two-Face in The Dark Knight. And now the latest one to pop up - The Lone Ranger! It certainly does seem that studios and maybe audiences and maybe Jake himself have a desire to see Jake kitted out in spandex and mask, saving us from evil beyond our imagination while rippling some muscles honed to perfection.

This particular instalment of the Superhero Jake adventure has the producers of the Pirates of Caribbean franchise 'focus on the hero's origin story, where a group of Texas Rangers are ambushed and slain by outlaws. An American Indian named Tonto finds a lone survivor, and together, they make a pact to bring the gang to justice. No cast or crew have been named as yet, but the likes of Brad Pitt, Jake Gyllenhaal and Casey Affleck are rumoured as contenders for the title role.'

If nothing else, this shows that Jake is in that privileged and small circle of Hollywood actors, who are top choices for the most successful of directors and producers intent on making a blockbuster. Alternatively, these actors can prefer to make a film to make us think. Or they can do both - ideally, at the same time.

Another film that Jake has been associated with in the past - to the extent that he was seen with what looked like the name of the film etched down his forearm - is Torso. This serial killer movie is a future project for David Fincher. opinion is divided on whether Jake should work with Fincher again or not after the experiences of Zodiac. However, as someone who believes that Zodiac contains some of Jake's finest work, I would welcome this reunion. However, maybe Jake thinks differently, because Matt Damon's is the last name associated with the role of Eliot Ness. More recently [and I can't locate the link at the moment], it looks like no names are attached even though the movie has the go ahead.

Back in 2006, Jake was also associated with The Sparrow. This project, which tells the story of a 'Jesuit priest [who] accompanies a space crew to a distant planet after Earth receives its first contact from aliens' has Brad Pitt for a producer and Brad himself is now rumoured to be the lead in this film - now put back to 2010. Interestingly, Matt Damon had also been associated with this project, alongside Jake's. It all makes it very interesting.

And finally

A shameless plug for the new album - Red - by the Guillemots, a band favoured by Jake and one I have mentioned here before. Jake has been spotted watching the Guillemots' amazing and unusual gigs (it has been said said that you see a Guillemots' show and at the end you want to hug the person next to you) and at Glastonbury 2007, the band were asked about their famous fan: 'F.D. Jake Gyllenhaal was nice. Very shy. Didn't seem like a movie star in his hoodie… G.S.: …But he did have a girl with him. F.D.: And he was very cool. He told us he sang along to our songs in his car… Strange.' Not strange at all. What was slightly stranger was hearing that much of this album was recorded in a London synagogue. - this is an album with a loud heart and brave acoustics that makes you want to listen to it over and over again.

Thanks to Monica for the link. Includes pictures from IHJ.

Thank the Lord it's back to work soon for Jake so he can escape this media madness. You've used some pictures I've never seen before, they're fab.

Interesting that Jake's name would be associated with Mary Doria Russell's The Sparrow. The main character is hispanic. It's been a while since I've read it. Jake has the right coloring along with some contacts to change those baby blues of his.

I'm still charmed by the idea of Jake playing Namath. With sharp writing that could be another career-defining role for him.

Hi Sheba! I love Jake to be hard at work making new movies for us. At this rate, with all the rumoured movies, he'd never be doing anything else! I'm glad you liked the pics, I had some fun choosing them :D

Hey JoeAnn - good to see you again :D That's very interesting about The Sparrow - I remember it being mentioned some time ago but I had forgotten. On a shallow note, I would hate to see Jake's beautiful eyes disguised. I can be won over by the Namath project just as I have been by Nailed. Thanks for commenting :)

Thanks for the post. i am always up for some new Jake casting news :)

but I have to confess, i am not thrilled about the Lone Ranger, I hate the all those Jerry Bruckheimer stuff, except for CSI... and i don't like any of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, in fact, I was so bored, i fell asleep during the 2nd one! lol... but I can understand if Jake wants to be in a big budget film, like he did TDAT, he admitted he enjoyed the experience.

Unfortunately i think Fincher has once denied that Jake link to "Torso"... personally i think Jake looks better in Armani suit to play Elliot Ness than Matt Damon.

I guess we all notice how many films Jake are linked to also have Matt Damon attached to it as well (remember the whole Lance Armstrong biopic? Matt Damon was on the title role before)... this is quite interesting. Matt Damon was famous of being the no.1 "cost effective" actor in hollywood last year. He doesn't charge much but he has a few big blockbusters.

i can't imagine Jake being the "cost effective" actor, to be honest... Iol..

Hi ho Silver, away
Step into tomorrow, today
Now who was that masked man you say?
He was the Lone ... Ranger [ranger] [ranger]

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi there Winterbird - interesting. I have enjoyed the Pirate movies at the cinema but just beause they look so fabulous on the big screen and they make me laugh. I've had no desire to see any of them since but these guys obviously know how to make a blockbuster and maybe Jake does want to have another go in this area.

I'm so fascinated by the whole Torso thing - as a Fincher fan if for no onther reason. And the fact stars keep coming and going.

That is a very interesting comparison of Jake and Matt - the cost-effective stars. Of course, Matt's a little older but it does make one wonder how the two of them may be competing for similar roles. What issues help the producers decide? Is it cost? risk? Hmmm.

Hey Singalonganouska :D You're in good voice tonight. Gonna have to admit - I flippin hated the Lone Ranger but I do love that song :D

Anonymous said...

I apologise for knowing that song, WDW :( I'll read the rest of the post now.

Anonymous said...

OK I feel less guilty for singing it now :)

Jake is the only believable Jesuit priest out of a choice of Jake, Matt and Brad.

twistedlogic said...

You forget how many rumours crop up all the time until you see them all together like that! I have to say none of these potential roles excite me that much, so I'm not bothered if none of them come to fruition, but I suppose if I had to choose I'd go for Torso.Whatever the rights and wrongs of Fincher's approach to directing, he certainly got a brilliant performance out of Jake(it helps that Jake's talented of course, but still...) and Jake will know what to expect this time so he should cope with it better. Plus shallow me thinks he would be extremely sexy as a cop;D

The Moon Project sounds like it could be fun, and again for purely shallow reasons, I would choose that over The Sparrow. The premise of both sounds similar, but I'm guessing there'd be less call for a Jesuit priest to get his kit off. And I'm sorry to disagree with you on your first post here, Joeann (welcome, btw!) but I do not want to see Jake wearing colour changing contacts, those baby blues are too beautiful to hide away.

I'll jump rope if Anouska sings:

Heigh ho silverware
Tonto's lost his underwear
Tonto says, me dont care
Long Ranger buy me 'nother pair

Anonymous said...

oh... btw, I love what Guillmots' said about Jake :)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Sort of penitent Anouska but not really and Pia :D Sing away! Why is this all making me think of Indian Jones wit his leather hat, jacket and his trusty whip. I can see Jake doing that...

Hi there TL! I know, it's strange when you put all the prospective roles together - although I haven't included them all here. I was surprised to see how many superhero roles there were here.

Torso sounds good to me - I don't think I want to see Jake as a Jesuit priest even though I'm sure he'd excel! I need the Moon Project!

Winterbird - I love the Guillemots so much - when I saw the new album I couldn't get home quick enough to listen to it. I need to spend some time with my MP4. And they appreciate Jake!

Hey all,

Lots to catch up on! New pics of Jake looking all fantastically tan. Don't like that he is still on crutches. :(

So more superhero speculation? Lone Ranger...hmm. And I hadn't heard about The Sparrow. Thanks WDW again for dong all the great Gyllen-research.

OT but I thought you and those that watch Top Gear would be interested. I heard on the radio today that they want to do an American version with Jay Leno. Although he doesn't think it would be as good as the original.

Monica said...

Good afternoon!
I hope that he does not accept to Lone Ranger!
I would like to see Jake acting on Torso. It seems to be an interesting project.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Good to see you, Get Real :D I do like speculating about superhero Jake I must say, even if I don't actually fancy it really happenening!

OMG Jay Leno doing Top Gear?? Noooo - that is not a possibility. It has to be the Hamster, Jeremy and James or noone at all :( But good to see tis fab show getting some attention across the pond, but the hosts are what makes it what it is... I should stop ranting.

Hi Monica - thanks for the pic link :) I'd like to see Jake in Torso too - I want to see Jake in a lot of Fincher - I'll have to talk Jake round :D

Anonymous said...

Noooooooooo. They're going to ruin Top Gear which has a perfectly good format. Why can't the boys go over to the states to do a short season of specials.

Definately Yes please to another David Fincher film. I'm now such a huge fan of sexy Fincher I'd watch anything he does.

I love the picture of Jake in black - *swoon* - just look at him - wow!... and the funny one with Orlando.

Anonymous said...

Yay - I love hearing about all of Jake's projects. The Sparrow sounds really interesting, The Lone Ranger, and Torso too. I love Jerry Bruckheimer, am a big fan of CSI (Las Vegas) and Cold Case. I'm curious about his take on The Lone Ranger. Haven't seen any of the Pirates movies, tho. I bet Jake and David Fincher would work well together the second time around. I haven't seen these pics of Jack Twist ahorseback before, they are beautiful. *sigh* Still thinking of tall, tan and lovely Jake in Cabo. Thanks, whoever linked him to that song in the previous thread, I will forever think of that now! ;)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Sheba - oh the Top Gear show when they were driving across Alabama... :D

Yeay another fan of sexy Fincher - I love this guy, so much so Anouska has accused me of being unfaithful to Jake. Never, I protest! I love to see the picture of Jake with Pirates Orlando.

Hey Bertie! I do like CSI, I just never get the chance to watch it. I didn't know they did CSI and the Pirates movies - interesting mix. And Lone Ranging Jake definitely reminded me of Jack on his horse. I like to fill Jake's calendars up with a whole flood of different movies :)

Anonymous said...

Love Leno, but not for Top Gear, it just would work. The guys could do something like that again, but drive all around the states and have the celebs from the different states take part. What about Top Gear and Nascar! Travesty :DD. I digress.

Would have loved to see Jake and Maggie do the Wonder Twins even as an independant movie.

Imagine the two of them working together now that they are older, more mature in their approach to their careers now that they are more established. Additionally, I feel they would bring a sense of reality to a fantasy storyline if it has the right emotional journey in the script.

Donnie Darko is the only sci-fi type movie he's done so another one is due now please Mr Gyllenhaal thank you very much in advance!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Oh yes, Sheba. I loved the idea of Jake playing someone who could transform into ice weapons and weather elements as a Wonder Twin! I really would have enjoyed seeing Maggie and Jake in that - it could never hae been serious but it would have been extremely funny :D

Another scifi film is definitely overdue! Roll on Unnamed Movie Project - cannot wait for this one...

Anonymous said...

And they have that sharp sarcastic and almost caustic wit to pull of such a role.

I'd forgotten about the Moon project - it's gotta be done.

Anonymous said...

The reason they probably picked Jay Leno is because is a car enthusiast and has a ton of cars and bikes. But he is so bland imo. I wish we got the UK version here. Have never seen it.

I too love that pic of Jake, Orlando and photographer Marion Testino.

OMG I would love to see Jake and Maggie work together again. And Jake and Fincher too. Although I think Jake will have his hands full with David O Russell on Nailed.

Anonymous said...

I need to find out more about this David O Russell.. I've only ever heard what he did to Lily Tomlin, althogh he made Wag the Dog which I love. He'd better treat Jake right otherwise he'll have the whole Kingdom of Gyllenhaalics on his @ss.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

It certainly has, Sheba :D

Get Real, I didn't realise that was Marion Testino in the Orlando picture. Thanks for that! And I didn't realise Jay was such a car and bike man - he's gone right up in my estimation now :D

I do have some worries about how Jake will work with Russell... :\

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Sheba, I just can't watch the Russell-Lily Tomlin YouTube vid - it would make me worry far too much :\

Anonymous said...

Jake can handle Russell, remember he's Wet, Dark and Wild :DD

Anonymous said...

Yup, Jay is a big car and bike fan has a ton of custom and old cars/bikes.

Yes that is the famed photog Mario sqeezed together with Jake and Orlando. :)

I have seen the Russell/Lily Tomlin video and all I can say is...oy! But as Sheba said, Jake is Wet Dark and Wild and I bet he can handle him!

Anonymous said...

He'd better treat Jake right otherwise he'll have the whole Kingdom of Gyllenhaalics on his @ss.

Oh yeah, you got that right, Sheba. He has no idea how bad it could get. ;) We're giving him fair warning! I heard that George Clooney had trouble with David O. Russell too.

Anonymous said...

Jake and Maggie as Wonder Twins would be my idea of heaven! Ive been posting on a friend's blog as both Jayna haha and Gleek, the space monkey, hahaha - but they are all guys and Ive given up on them.

listening to Leonard Cohen tonight. in that kind of a mood - I think I'll join a monastery.

Anonymous said...

Berti Knox says: He has no idea how bad it could get

Hehehe... I feel more sorry for David O Russell now. I heard about Clooney, and that he tore Russell off a strip. Was it 3 Kings with Mark Walberg. I have that movie I think, I'll go watch it - see what this fella's about.

Jayna and Gleek, need to read up on those guys too but Lord help the Monastery (sorry, just a bit of fun ;D )

Anonymous said...

D.O.R. sounds like a trip. See video with Lily Tomlin during Huckabee filming. So there's a real cast of characters getting together in S.C. Hmmm and as we know Jake can be a bit of a drama queen, haha, Nadine, of course I mean - passionate! :) :) :)

Anonymous said...

come to tnink of it, as Donnie would say, who says they're NOT the Wonder Twins.

Mr J. wishes you the best on this holiday...he's reformed after all.

Perhaps the object of your affection would be interested in working with me? I've got so many great ideas. :)

Morning everyone :D I thoroughly enjoyed catching up on your conversation last night about Wonder Twins and the famously scary Russell. I must see Three Kings. ia, I hope you don't join a monastery but I can see how Cohen could drive you to it ;D

Much honoured by the visit, Mr J. I believe you may be more than a match for David Russell :D

See you all later, running late ...:)

When I think about Jake as a superhero, Donnie Darko is the only one that comes in mind...;)

Never heard about Guillemots before but I checked on their site and...I like them, I wanna try and listen more of them. As he did with Rufus, Jake widens my musical horizons...:)

Not a tag that would normally get hung round my neck but I have to admit to having just been utterly suckered by that Jakey April Fool,WDW - so funny, even though I feel a bloody idiot for being taken in ;-D

Some of these rumoured /potential film projects Jake has been linked to are really interesting! I'm still hoping Jake will star in the "Moon Project" and the Joe Namath movie.

I'm not normally a fan of superhero movies (TDK will be an exception this Summer). Good to see you here Mr.J! Gone 10 weeks today - Rest easy,Heath :-/

However,I'm strangely drawn to the plot-line for The Lone Ranger that you precis here,WDW. If Jake were to be the Lone Ranger who would be a fitting Tonto?! Dunno why,but I'd like to see a complete or virtual unknown cast in that role, rather than a glossy A-lister,maybe with Jake having a hand in choosing said new-comer to act opposite him. Crikey,I'm really going off on a flight of fancy there!

And there's something about the thought of Jake as a Jesuit priest that floats my boat too. Remember Heath gave such a glorious je ne sais quoi to a man in a dog collar...

I should also check out the Guillemots, not only because you and Jake obviously rate them,WDW,but because I've been particularly GULLible today....Runs from thread, being pelted with rotten tomatoes...:-D

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Xenia :D Do check out the Guillemots - their albums are fab and the new one has hooked me :)

Hey Naive Nadine - you're not the only one. I will admit to having been suckered as well - as my cries of protest will attest, which reverberated around my hometown when I saw the headline! Fortunately, soon found out otherwise and my blood pressure dropped back to normal. Mr WDW enjoyed the moment though :D

The least you can do is listen to the Guillemots' new album to make up for that dreadful pun!

See you all later :D Beautiful day here.

"i don't like any of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, in fact,
I was so bored, i fell asleep during the 2nd one! " [Winterbird]

That's because the 2nd one was pretty stupid. The first and third
were a bit better. I hope they don't make any more.

"I guess we all notice how many films Jake are linked to also have
Matt Damon attached to it as well"

I was thinking about Matt Damon the other day. His inner child is alive and well. He has a wonderful attitude toward his work.

"I need to find out more about this David O Russell.. I've only
ever heard what he did to Lily Tomlin, althogh he made Wag the
Dog which I love. He'd better treat Jake right otherwise he'll
have the whole Kingdom of Gyllenhaalics on his @ss" [Sheba]

Russell is also rumored to have had a fistfight with George Clooney. It's really sad. People who explode like that end up having fewer and fewer people willing to work with them...

I was pretty relieved (Jake april fool) as I thought it might be the photoshopped version, and was prepared to write to my congressman
or the NYTimes re: the evils of photoshopping, since there is nothing to compare with the RL real thing which admittedly, I kmow only in my dreams, etcetetc. . . still! (be still my heart)

any chance of a reprise of the terrific Joker pix you posted somewhile back, WDW - (or tell me where to find them) H's birthday is Friday - his spirit talent and presence is certainly not lost to us . . .

Anonymous said...

No to Lone Ranger.

Yes to Torso.

Just my opinion.

BirdGirl said...

Hi everyone,

Yeah I just noticed yesterday that Heath's Birthday would have been this Friday. It makes me so sad. Especially with all of the in family fighting going on. I wish that the media wouldn't report on it. It makes me sick.

BTW, the baseball game did get rained out yesterday. I am not too happy about it since they were leading 5-1. Now they have to replay it like it never happened. Hopefully they play just as well today.

Talk to ya’ll later.

Happy April Fools Day!

Anonymous said...

Hey, Cardinal Girl, I mean Bird Girl. Bummer about the game. Booo to the sky, rain here, also.

Sorry to hear about Heath family disputes, sorta classic, seems part of grieving problems. When my mother died, my daughter could not believe that my sisters and myself were fighting about the family silver. Its all about love.

But I keep away from media madness and am SO GRATEFUL to have a place to celebrate the spirit, presence and artistry of those actors we love without getting sick to the stomach.

O gosh I really love Leonard Cohen on a rainy day.

Time for pea soup and peanut butter sandwich. What would I do without peanut butter?

Thank you WDW for this very interesting post, I didn't know about some of the movies he has been linked to :)
There was also an on stage project, wasn't it? (sorry in case you already mentioned it here but I haven't read all comments yet :P )

And i love the pic with the green t-shirt ;) He looks gorgeous!

I'm sure he and the director associated with Farragut North are no longer attached to the project. What about that first picture where the background brings out his baby blues??

Have I missed something? What's the April Fool joke?

Incidently, I hold you all responsible for my being late for work this morning - keeping me up all night, mind buzzing with images of Jake as superhero and in spandex (you know he's only one of a few that can pull that look off).

Tonight, I'm having an early night so enjoy, even the little stopouts :D
