Love and Other Drugs: 'Smart, Sexy, Raunchy and Hilarious'

A couple of nights ago an advanced screening of Love and Other Drugs took place in Olathe, near Kansas City, and, judging by a review of it posted yesterday, it was a corker! The review is spoilery to some degree and so you might not want to read it just yet, but it gives nothing away to quote the summing up:

'This film was by far the best romantic comedy I have seen. It’s smart, sexy, raunchy, and hilarious. The chemistry between Gyllenhaal and Hathaway worked very well, and their relationship was very believable. Josh Gad’s character added the raunchy ‘Hangover-esque’ guy type of comedy needed to keep the male half of a couple interested. Writer/Director Ed Zwick’s interpretation of Jamie Reidy’s novel Hard Sell: The Evolution of a Viagara Salesman translated extremely well to the big screen and made me want to read the book. I know, the movie is never as good. Overall, the film worked, the cast including Platt and Azaria were perfectly picked, and I would totally recommend it.'

'Hopefully ‘Love and Other Drugs’ does well at the Box Office and causes a trend toward ‘rom-com’s’ that work for both members of the sexes. I give ‘Love and Other Dugs’ 4 1/2 Stars.'

The pairing of Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway for a RomCom has to be inspired casting. Fine actors, sexy and gorgeous, likeable, funny and good friends in real life - how could it not succeed in drawing both men and women into the theatres? Obviously one shouldn't be put off by the fact (as revealed on IMDb today by someone else who's seen the film) that Jake's bum does indeed get an airing in the film.

Love and Other Drugs may be getting a screening in Kanas City but it doesn't look like Venice will be as lucky. Today, the lineup for the September festival was announced and I'm afraid to report it's Jake Gyllenhaal-free. So that leaves London...

Jake inspires

A feature with Josh Hutcherson (Journey to the Centre of the Earth) shows that the teenage actor continues to holdup Jake Gyllenhaal as his idol and inspiration. This follows on from other interviews over the years. When Josh was 14: 'I want to act with Jake Gyllenhaal. He’s a great actor and he’s made so many great choices with the movies he’s done in his career. I want to model my career after his.'

And also in 2007: 'I really look up to Jake Gyllenhaal as an actor. Because the roles he chooses aren’t based on the biggest blockbuster movies. They’re based on being diverse roles, and that’s how I like to do it. He has a very similar career route as I’m hoping to take. And he seems like he’s a very grounded nice person too!'

After hearing Jake talk about some of the actors who have influenced him - such as Harrison Ford and Paul Newman - it's great to know that, in turn, there are younger actors driven on in their career by emulating the example set by Jake. Here's hoping that Josh does achieve his goal of acting alongside Jake.

This post is illustrated with great new old pictures courtesy of IHJ, including pictures from the Day After Tomorrow photocall in Berlin and photos of Jake and Kirsten in London in 2003, with Paul Bettany, on the set of Wimbledon.

Me too, Linda :D The old pics are great - love the chemistry between Jake and Emmy in TDAT roo.

Hi there Winterbird! Yep, and it's been a while :D Paul's very tall - Jake's very good at getting photographed next to very tall people.

Great news about LAOD!

Kiki and Jake were adorable together. :)

I recently watched Phantom of the Opera and Emmy Rossum was lovely in it.

Can't wait for SC and LaOD! :)

Hi Anon! I've not seen Phantom of the Opera but I have Emmy's album - love it! As for Kirsetn, Marie Antoinette is one of my favourite films - I play that soundtrack over and over. Cannot wait for LAOD and SC!

Smart, sexy, raunchy, hilarious. Never mind describing the film, that's Jake to a fine T! Yay, I love that shapely butt and it being perfectly framed on the big screen will make my day. Yes, I'm objectifying him but he shouldn't be so darn all round perfectly scrumptious in every way :DD

This waiting for LaOD info feels like the waiting game for PoP, only worse because at least we got little teasers, we're getting nothing here, not even one picture >:( However, I won't complain too much as at least we have two films to look forward to and hope he gets to do another project soon.

Hey Karen, will be in touch soon for PoP meet up. We'll probably have to combine our coffee meet up with this :DD

Kirsten is not one of my favourites but I adore seeing those pictures of Jake with her. It's something real and beautiful we're seeing between them. I hope very soon he has that again with someone.

Emmy is so gorgeous, I hope her career takes off in the way that it promised all those years ago.

Very true, Sheba :) I think Jake can take a little objectification :D Just like I could quite happily put up with a picture or trailer or two for LAOD!

Have a great time with Karen and Dastan :D

That mini spoilery review of LAOD put a huge smile on my face this evening after a really bad day:) I agree WDW we could do with a picture or a trailer soon for this one.

Thanks for putting some lovely old pics in the post tonight. I'm a fan of Kirsten aswell and I loved Wimbledon:)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Sorry to hear about your bad day, Carol - Glad the review helped - and the lovely pics :D

PS I loved Wimbledon too

LAOD is a film to really look forward to.

Interesting to see Jake and Kirsten together when Wimbledon was being filmed. It's a watchable movie.

Cheers

I'm so ready for LAOD to be released. I'm a huge fan of Anne Hathaway's. I think her and Jake have great chemistry. I'm really looking forward to this film.

Thanks for this, WDW! I have been dying to see anything at all about LaOD as well as Nailed & Source Code. Gee, this year is going to crawl by while we wait for LaOD to hit the theaters. We need a trailer ASAP!!!

I have to agree with Sheba, Jake has the most yummy body ever & I personally can NOT wait to see him in a love romp with Anne onscreen! Whoo-hoo!

By the way, if you have never seen Phantom of the Opera with Emmy, you must. It is one of my favorite movies of all time. She & Gerard Butler are magnificent together & she can sing like a true angel.

& YEAH, I had no idea that Paul Bettany was THAT tall! He must be 6'4" at least, if Jake is 6'. I love him in everything I have seen him in. The old pics of Jake with Kirsten & Paul were great! >;-)

Exciting news! So looking forward to more Jake, I do hope they market it well. I love the 'Wimbledon' pics too, never seen those. That film has really grown on me too. Once you get over the embarrassing concept of a British winner of Wimbledon, its a really sweet film.

Morning all - a hot Friday!

Morning Tui :D

Hi there Leslie! Agreed - it'll be amazing to see Jake and Anne together again, on the big screen and in publicity :)

Hi Vanessa! I think Gerard Butler was the reason I didn't see Phantom - he's a big stumbling block of mine! Even a phobia! Maybe I should grit my teeth :D

Morning TD! You're very right - that is a humumgous concept to get past with Wimbledon. Mind you, he can hardly believe it himself :D

have a lovely Friday everyone!

Hi everybody!
.
I enjoyed Wimbledon movie. I watched it on TV not long ago and I paid close attention cause I had recently known that Kirsten had been Jake's girlfriend. And now I see the pictures... They made a lovely couple.
.
On my batch of DVD's, I have watched so far Moonlight Mile and Jarhead. Funny how Zodiac and Moonlight Mile share a song (I Want To Take You Higher). I enjoyed more Jarhead but I think is because I was more in the mood for more Jake in action after PoP. (Liked also Peter Sarsgaard's work).
.
I still have to watch Donnie Darko, DAT, Rendition, and rewatch Proof and BBM.
.
I'm learning new words in english thanks to all your comments: bum, raunchy, yummy body, scrumptious, romp... Had to look them up ;-D
.
WDW, I'm going to miss reading your daily posts. I'm going on holidays with no internet connection. I will try to catch up on my return.

This is just plain cruel. First you give us the news that LAOD won't be at TIFF, then you post these very exciting remarks about the movie. :-P

Well, fingers crossed then for London. When is that festival, by the way? I hope to be in London somewhere around the end of October, it would be too good to believe if the two things would coincide.

Enjoy your holidays, Eureka! :)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Have a lovely holiday, Eureka :) Listening to you here discovering these movies, it makes me want to work through them again too - ths oundstracks are so good. Glad you enjoyed Jarhead so much. I loved TDAT, and DD - actually all of them, so keep going :D

OMG those are some great words - we'll have to come up with some more. Just like I've been learning expressions from Jake - Super Dope still being my favourite. Still don't know what 'to yukk' means!

See you when you're back!

Hi Lady Ekster! I know, it does seem hard, sigh... The London Festivals is in mid October I think, so maybe you and Jake will both be here! Ever since Heath was here for I'm Not There I've had my hopes that Jake will turn up for one :)

LadyEkster said...

Oh my word, you gave me goosebumps with that sentence. *giggles like a small girl* Who knows, who knows...
I'm planning to go see a play in the West End with a friend, and it all depends on whether or not I have finished my thesis by October (a fifty-fifty chance, I think). But should Jake come to London I couldn't care less if my supervisor were to get really mad at me for not making the deadline. *big grin*

About that yukking thing, might this be of help: http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/yuk_it_up ?

Cazajuguetes said...

Thanks LadyEkster.
Keep it up with your thesis!
.
Thanks WDW!
I use English for work and with some friends but it is good to know about these other words so appropriate for JAKE.
I vote for:
FANS - JAKE, JAKE - FANS word reference. ;-D
.
I think today it will be DAT. And the rest will have to wait until I'm back.
.
Cheers.

WHY does Kansas get to see it :( what did they ever do except have cyclones that blow people to OZ (and not the down under one either :P)

It sounds like this movie is going to be a winner. We all know Jake can do comedy and now he is going to prove it. I think the pairing of him and Anne was a great choice, they certainly has some on screen chemistry in BBM and it must have been nice to work with someone you are familiar with again.

AND I think it should be a requirement that his 'bum' get an airing every once in a while. I mean the poor thing is trapped in those tight-fitting jeans the SHAME!

so I look forward to seeing this movie and Jake's ASSets too

thanks for those pics of Jake and Kirsten and Paul. I remember him from when he worked with Heath in AKT, he was great at chauncer.

Hi there Sweetpea! Have to stick up for Kansas! It may as well be shown there as anywhere where I'm not :D

I defnitely think it must have been a nice experience for Jake and Anne to have worked together again.

Paul was fab as Chaucer! One of my favourite films :)

Fantastic to read such great reviews of LAOD and to hear Duncan give Jake so much praise!! I would think with all the praise LAOD is getting that they will hopefully give it proper promotion in the fall. Fingers crossed on that one! Just because a movie isn't at TIFF, it could still be in Venice. As for SC, it sounds exciting and I love the cast.

Nice to hear Jake and fam are on MV! I wonder if he or they will be at Chelsea Clinton's wedding tomorrow. They are friends with the Clinton's and Rhinebeck wouldn't be that hard to get to from MV.

Thanks also for the lovely old/new pics of Jake, Paul and Kirsten. :)

Good to see you Get Real! I hope you had a good holiday!

Unfortunately, this was the news that LAOD won't be at Venice either but I can hope for London! Jake's not been seen for a few days since he got back to LA but I wouldn't be surprised if he's heading up there for the bash. I'm still sorting out a hat...

Hey WDW, I wish I knew why you felt like that about GB, is it because you don't like HIM? Or because you did not want to see him or anyone else play the Phantom in the movie? He is a really good actor imho & was wonderful in Dear Frankie with Emily Mortimer if you haven't seen that, I highly suggest it. You may see him differently after that. As far as Phantom goes, if it is a Crawford issue & you just didn't want GB cast, then let me just say, give it a chance, you might have a change of heart. MC was excellent for his time, but ALW cast Gerry himself on purpose as he wanted to change up the story just a bit to make it more rockish & sexier. & imho, he was spot on with his choice. I ADORE the stage production & have since I first saw it back in the day, but I thought the movie version was done very well & again Emmy is superb in it & truly sings like an angel, my eyes well up with tears when she sings in the movie. Check it out if for no other reason than for Emmy. >;-)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Vanessa! I'm afraid it's Gerard! I love 300 but I can't seen him in a non-action role. I heard very bad things about him in that Jen Aniston romcom but I am prepared to give him another go - after all I've been won round to Leo and Russell Crowe lately :D

Vanessa said...

Oh please give him another go, WDW! I admit I am a huge GB fan for the past 6 years, so I am quite biased, but I will admit I didn't care for that last movie with Jen Aniston at all & I love her. They did not have any chemistry together & the movie just was not funny enough to be called a good rom-com. I loved 300, but I actually went nuts over him in Phantom moreso. Not all stage Phantom fans agree with me for sure, but there are a ton of GB fans that fell in love with him because of that movie.

Check it out, I promise, you won't be sorry you did!

>;-)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Vanessa! OK - I'll give him another go and not let him put me off seeing a movie in the future - although I agree with you about the Bounty Hunter - I've heard some terrible things about that one... I want to see Jen in some better movies - she deserves them.

Have a good Saturday!
