[Updated] Jake Gyllenhaal really is off to swim with walruses and how he ate his way around Pittsburgh: 'I like to eat'

[Update] It seems like Jake must have heard about our less than redhot feelings at his association with the movie New Year's Eve. Today Jake's name is gone from IMDb, as is Taylor Swift's, and both have been replaced by Zac Efron, Reese Witherspoon and Halle Berry!

On with the Arctic post...

We've heard Jake Gyllenhaal talk about turning 30, we've heard Jake talk about walruses, but now we get to have the two put together because Jake has revealed to the NY Daily News his plans for the big 3-0 celebrations: 'To commemorate the date, he's taking the family on a trip to the Arctic Circle to scuba-dive with walruses. "The only reason I'm doing it is I wanted to do something that absolutely terrified me — killer whales and walruses and freezing cold water? That seems absolutely terrifying."'

[The picture above is from LATimes - the interview featured in the River Nile post]

Clearly Jake is enough past his horror of ostriches to be able to take to the icy depths with walruses and orca during the dark Arctic Circle winter. As someone who's been fortunate enough to have travelled big chunks of the world for some incredible wildlife adventures [I have an outstanding ambition to see whales off Norway], I am thrilled by Jake's choice of birthday challenge. I have, however, been doing some research - here is the scale of what's in store for Jake.

This interview is a goodie. It includes another accout of 16-year-old Jake's streak through the Beverley Center in speedoes for a bet and further hints to his rapacious eating habits: 'Gyllenhaal still loves returning to New York, if only for his regular black-and-white cookie fix. "I'm a connoisseur," he laughs. "And I love the one at Nussbaum & Wu — that's one of my favorite black-and-white cookies in the city."' Read more here.

There is another fine interview with Jake in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. This was of course the place where Love and Other Drugs was filmed and it's clear that Jake has some fond memories of the city although, not surprisingly, most of this has to do with food. As Jake says here: '"Oh, gosh. Let's see, I went to so many places. I like to eat. I ate my way around. I ate everywhere. I wish I could remember the names of everything." Without any prompting, he recalls, "I loved Dish -- the restaurant Dish. I did love the pancakes at Pamela's, I'd have to say, which is probably the go-to. 21st Street Coffee. There was a Greek place that was right where I lived [in Squirrel Hill], I don't remember the name."'

'Mr. Gyllenhaal, who shot the Ed Zwick film from mid-September to late November 2009, says, "I was surprised at how much I loved all the food and actually how much I loved Pittsburgh. ... I loved the change of seasons there, and I loved the people there and I had a great time. I would love to make another movie in Pittsburgh."'

Jake talks about what he learned from Jamie Randall (the 'real' viagra rep) and what the role taught him about the pharmaceutical industry. He also recalls his jitters before the first day on set: 'I hardly ever sleep the first night before shooting. It's like, I never believe I'm making a movie. I think I'm going to forget all the things I've rehearsed and prepared.'

And on his relationship with Anne after Brokeback: 'We weren't friends like we are now. ... We shared a great bond from that movie; everybody involved in it did.' [Anne's opening skit from SNL below shows some alternative EW covers...]

Jake also talks about how he is able to get on with his private life, getting coffee like everyone else, even if he's spotted. 'I think we live in a world where people who are in the public eye have to know that what they do is going to be documented. There is definitely an ability for privacy, but most of the time, you just have to accept that that's what it is. And I think you have to be who you are and do what you love, and I think most of the time, people are pretty respectful and when they're not, they're not.'

'He says he loves his fans and making movies and the attention that comes with it. When it's suggested that 99 percent of the population can run out for coffee or stop for gas without checking in the mirror, he says, "So can I. It just depends on what you believe. If you want everybody to see you looking a certain way, then if that makes your life happy, then that's great. That would make me miserable. If you're aware of it all the time, I think you're not living. People are going to make mistakes, they're going to have amazing times, hard times, just like everybody, and people might document that and say whatever they're going to say, but ultimately it's just life. You can take a picture of it or not, but you gotta live it."'

'He says he loves his fans and making movies and the attention that comes with it"

many comments in the previous post, my opinion ... I totally agree with Alejandra, mermorn ... it's your choice
Drama, mystery, comedy, action, romance, so much variety that we all your fans happy and enjoy it on the screen. To me, that's a good actor, making movies very different, characters so versatiles
other time, thanks for much information WDW

Hi there Karmentxu - it was an interesting discussion. I totally agree - versatility is something I Treasure in Jake's choices. It's a pleasure, thanks for commenting!

Great Sunday reading. :)

Anne was cute on SNL but I hoped Jake was going to show up.

Watched that behind the scnes Jimmy Fallon clip and that was really great and funny.

So Jake wants to be in the arctic on his birthday?!?!? Um okay, lol. ;p

Also a heads up that Jake will be on the CBS Early Show this Wednesday the 24th.

Actually Jake and Anne will be on the local NYC ABC early news show before GMA on Monday. I will dvr it but I don't know how to upload that to YouTube? Hopefully it will be on their website.

Thanks Get Real! It does seem rather an odd place to go at this time of year. Truly a beautiful place but during the winter night? Maybe they'll go in the spring.

Thanks about the Monday morning appearance! I updated the front of WDW with the CBS thing this morning so I'll add this other one now :D I have to get things from the PVR/DVR onto a disc. It's quite a business...

I think Jake is showing his maturity and expressing what he has discovered along the way about life and being in the public eye. That you just have to live your life the way you want, if you pay too much attention to who is following you around taking pics or what they're saying in the tabloids you're not living your life.

Ultimately, no matter what the rags say OR even what we fans say, it is Jake's life. What he does is his decision.

I am glad he likes diversity and wants to try different things. I have to admit I am glad his name is no longer associated with NYE, I keep thinking about the Joe Namath movie and wonder if he will do that or not. I also wonder where the moon project movie is right now. what stage? And is he going to star in it AND produce it?

Thanks, WDW, for illustrating what it will look like for Jake swimming with the walruses, those animals are HUGE. I didn't even know you could scuba dive with them.

Now Orcas (killer whales) I would love to see them up close. I've always wanted to go whale watching.

Just keep safe Jake. And I happen to LOVE black and white cookies too (well that and choc chip. I LOVE cookies)

Now I know where to go in Manhattan for them. I had an uncle who was a baker, when I was little he would bring home big cookies for me including B&W ones. Yummy!

Hi Sweetpea :) I'm a bit relieved to about NYE - now we just need to hear what is next! I'd settle for UMP. Those biscuits sound amazing!

Thanks for the walrus + Dastan picture, gave me a good laugh. :-D
So he is actually going to dive with them and in the Arctic Circle, wow. Aren't the pole animals migrating south this time of year? Not that I'm an expert but I am a big fan of Animal Planet. :) Maybe the family will go in the spring. Oh, and I would like to recommend watching Top Gear's drive to the North Pole for research, dearest Jake. ;)

Jake & Anne on the Jet cover was hysterical. :-D Very nice promo for LAOD, Anne, very nice.

Thanks for this news, wet dark. Jake reading your blog? Or someone close to him? No matter, because it is good to know that he is not involved in this film.

I hope his next job is something promising.

Then he goes to the Arctic? Good choice. I hope it's a wonderful day for him. He deserves it. He deserves everything good for being a wonderful person.

Yesterday my friend was commenting that she does not know what to do on her birthday. She is a big fan of Jake Gyllenhaal and she was born on December 19. That's wonderful.

Here a few months I will be completing 30 years. Still not scary to me.

I'm loving all these interviews. I love to learn more about Jake. He is an inspiration.

Hi lady Ekster! The whales like the rich cold waters but it's got to be the wrong time of year to dive with them. Very exciting though. Great idea about Top Gear. OMG I love that episode! And I loved the Jet cover too :D

Hey Monica :) Thecoincidence did make me laugh. 30 is a wonderful age to be. Such a liberating and freeing age. Of course I'm only imagining. A long way to go yet ;)

I hope everyone's having a good Sunday evening!

Hi!
Hahaha - to the updates. It's a lesson for us to be more patient with our opinion. But anyhow, it was interesting to discuss that :)
And we still know nothing about him and TS and about his future project.

Jake loves his fans! That means he loves me! What a nice feeling. I love you too Jake:)
I'm glad that he likes also the attention coming with movie making and from his fans. Isn't that fantastic that he said so?

This swimming in the cold, winter water, with walruses it's something I don't understand. Sorry Jake. How did he convinced his family? Brrr! Just come back healthy.

The "holding hands" picture with Anne is very sweet. I like the look in his eyes. And look at his other hand ;)

The interviews are fine - Intellectual orgy with Anne and their choices for the soundtrack, which they didn't find in the movie at all.

"If you want everybody to see you looking a certain way.... That would make me miserable. If you're aware of it all the time, I think you're not living." - Now we understand, that we can't expect that Jake will shave his beard for us, it would make him miserable, and we certainly don't want that.

And I like that - The journalists ask him how he broke the tension before sex scenes. "I feel like sex is all about.... releasing tension, so there is no way to ease tension beforehand," - that was intelligent and funny.

Judging by the fragment - Anne in SNL was very good.

Sorry for such a long comment, it was so much in the post!

I'm dying to go to the Artic Circle! *sigh* I would LOVE to scuba dive with walruses and whales! Jake you're my hero. I hope we get to hear a little more about that experience once it happens, and more importantly, I hope he & his family enjoy the trip.

That SNL clip was great! The Jet cover was so funny. WDW, the walrus and Dastan photo is CLASSIC :D

Has anything ever been mentioned about the Joe Namath movie?

Jake and Anne obviously love each other, but it's difficult to tell if only as friends or more.

If I were into gambling, I'd put my money on "Rock of Ages". ;-)

But I'm open to possibilities.

Lovely interviews and pics. Thank you, WDW!

Hope everyone starts the week with a smile. :-)

I have to say Anne Hathaway was absolutely wonderful on SNL last night- I was hoping Jake would be a surprise guest. Anne's interpretation of Judy Garland , Kate MIddleton, and Katie Holmes were spot on. After seeing this SNL episode, I realized Hathaway is beyond gifted . Plus, she has an incredible singing voice.

P.S. I can't wait for Jake to shine on SNL again.

Hui said...

Yes!!I want to hear Jake singing.Don't waste your talent, Jakey :)
After watching SC trailer, I found Vera Farmiga is such a beautiful and wonderful actress(I also love her in "up in the air"). I hope Jake can work with her again in the future.

Good morning everyone! Back at work - ugh - and very busy - :(.

Hi there Mermon - lovely long comment, thank you! These interviews when Jake's in the mood to chat like this are so rewarding. I liked the 'intellectual orgy' too and that was funny about the songs.

Morning Tiffany! It sounds like an amazing adventure. I really admire Jake for wanting to do it. No doubt, Peter will take the plunge too.

Hi Sweetpea - nothing more since Jake mentioned it during the PoP promo.

Hey Anon :) They're repeated over and over that they're acting and they're actors but they're also friends so it's bound to look good :) Thanks for the link.

Morning Alejandra! Rock of Ages would be good. I did start the day with a smile :)

Hi Jen! I saw some of it - I'd really like Jake to do it again too.

Hey Hui! Vera is a wonderful actres. I loved Up in the Air and I thought she was incredible in it. Definitely someone I was pleased to see Jake work with.

Have a great day everyone!

Thanks, WDW. I guess Jake's been very busy, but he really ought to keep up with the news if he wants to go swiimming in the Arctic!

Will you please tell Jake's people that scientists have discovered an entirely new species of Ostriches? Arctic Ostriches! They can swim and they are very, very agressive, and much stronger than their more tropical counterparts.

TYVM.

Alejandra said...

^ Hey, nice try. Except... Jake plans to go to the Arctic because he wants to do something that absolutely terrifies him. Newly discovered Arctic ostriches will only make him wish his birthday was sooner, I guess. ;-)

With Jake's wicked sense or humor (which he alluded to during one of the LAOD interviews) I have to wonder if this 'swimming with the Walruses in the arctic" is him pulling everyone's leg. I was watching a nature show last night on the National geographic channel and they were showing Walruses and their migration and I couldn't help thinking of Jake.

At this time of year I don't know that they do any kind of diving up there.

I guess we'll find out what he is doing for the BIG 3-0

I'm just watching The Day After Tomorrow on my TV. Jake is fantastic, very good looking! :)

I still see Jake's name attached to the film. Still holding out that this is just a bad rumor. haha

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi 15:00! Swimming ostriches, that is indeed a frightening thought...

I do admire that in him, Alejandra. It was one of the reasons why I went backpacking round Africa all those years ago - because it scared me. It was such a wonderful thing to do. Jake has the opportunity and means to do experience so many wonders.

Hi Sweetpea - I thought that the first time I heard Jake mention this, but now I think it's serious. But it does seem like the wrong time of year :D

Hey there Mermon! That is the film I saw that made me fall for Jake - back then in 2004 - it was something to do with the lips :) I will always adore Wet Sam.

Hi Shelly! Jake's name is indeed back associated with it! Crazy. Impossible to know what's going on. I wonder if anyone knows at all...

New post!
