In this second post of the day there's a lot to get through so I advise you to settle down in a comfy spot while I guide you through the updates from the day that will be recorded in the GyllenAnnals as The Day that Jake Gyllenhaal was Nominated for a Golden Globe for Love and Other Drugs. More details of that in the preceding post. We've had the nominations (of Jake and Anne Hathaway) and now we get the reactions. Here's what Variety has to say about Jake's response to his Nom (or is that Nomm?):
Jake 'read the news on his iPhone after several phone calls woke him up. "It was almost delivered by messenger," he said, but he would have appreciated a more theatrical method. "I would have loved to have had it delivered by some person in Shakespeare garb." As the subject of clothing, or lack thereof, came up, the thesp talked about all the attention paid to the pic's nude scenes. "There's been so much made about the nude scene, but the most important part of the film to me was the intimacy between the two characters," he said. He's glad for the attention paid to the film. "In the entertainment industry we feel so insular. It's so nice on a day like today, to see how far-reaching something like this is."'
No mention of any Nomination Pancakes this time around (a lesson learned from the Oscars).
This post features two new UK posters for Love and Other Drugs, courtesy of HeyUGuys, In which Anne in particular seem to have come under attack by someone with airbrush issues. Nevertheless, I'm looking forward to seeing them in a cinema here as so far I've not seen one.
Talking of awards, Prince of Persia is among the final 15 contenders listed for the Academy Award for Special Effects. You can read about its chances at Slashfilm.
And as the year comes to a close, Cosmopolitan has chosen Jake as one of its twenty hottest guys of the year - understandably.
We have some new interviews from Jake and Anne, including this audio recording from Robin Bailey in Sydney, which captures a magical sound - the sound of Jake popping his shoulder ala City Slickers in order to compete with Anne's hand farting superhero ability. Jake mentions again his Arctic Circle swimming ambitions.
Thanks to BBMISwear for the above scan from Parade!
Two video interviews have been posted by the Facebook page for Love and Other Drugs - videos one and two - and they are goodies.
Another of Jake's co-stars from the past, Selma Blair (Highway), has revealed to Elle the very touching and personal story that she carries Salinger's Nine Stories around with her every day: "Jake Gyllenhaal gave it to me many years ago because it's one his favourites, and in exchange I gave him a copy of 'Till We Have Faces'. I got this book maybe nine years ago, but I still carry it in whatever bag I have. It reminds me of the friendship I once had with Jake and these amazing stories by this author that I love."
Incidentally, 'Till We Have Faces' is CS Lewis' retelling of the Greek myth of Cupid and Psyche. It may also, perhaps, still be found on Jake's bookshelf. You can read about an interview Jake conducted with Selma back in 2002 here.
Jake Gyllenhaal himself was photographed driving around LA yesterday (13 December) and, I hate to say it, but do we see the first signs of something Sasquatchy? Thanks to IHJ for the picture.

So much in this gorgeous post!! But I'd like to start with Selma's memoires. Lovely!! I read that old interview here and had tons of fun. Even back then she was complaining they didn't get to see each other that often. :-)
I really think Jake is probably the closest to a magical creature we can ever expect to know (or know about, at least).
And sometimes I wonder... If you could have a true moment of friendship with Jake... wouldn't you miss him forever too?? Crushing thought. But beautiful to dream of.
I am nostalgic these days. Missing someone tremendously. But I have a lot to reminisce. ;-)
Thank you, WDW. xo
Thanks so much Alejandra! And that's a great place to start - I love the idea that Jake's friendship is precious enough that quite a few years later Selma still carries the book around with her - a constant reminder of Jake. Books are wonderful gifts for friends. My pleasure xx
What a nice story from Selma Blair. I wonder if they kept in touch over the years, why she talks about their friendship in the past tense? Wasn't Nine Stories the name of Jake's production company?
I saw that blurb in the Q&A of parade (I read it every week) He never did answer the question about the rings, but aren't there 3 of them and one says carpe diem. I figured he wouldn't mind sharing their story. I think it would be inspirational.
I hope the sasquatch is not returning, that it's just Jake taking a break from shaving during LAOD promos.
Any word if there is an official premiere for LAOD?
the posters look great. Airbrushing? well I thought this was pretty standard with pretty much any mag cover or movie poster. It shouldn't come as some shock.
Thanks WDW

I don't think Selma's suggesting her friendship is over, Sweetpea, just that a close phase has ended.
Of course airbrushing is typical of posters, but if you look at these they've altered the shape of the bodies, especially Anne's. It's not a shock, it's surprise at how clumsily they've been done.
Nohohooo! Not another Face Pet Era, I can't take it anymore. A Globe nomination does not mean you get to let it grow again, Mr Gylls!
Anne appears to be cross-eyed in those posters. *lol*
No doubt Inception will win that Special Effects Oscar, but if I had a - double - vote it would go to PoP and Narnia!
YESSS!!!! Congratulations Jake for the INCREDIBLY DESERVING Golden Globe Nomination! I am so proud of you! (I think I'm not the only one, right?)
Hi Lady Ekster! I'm hoping it's a temporary blip while Jake picks his GGlobes outfit! Also you don't want to go walrus diving with a walrus moustache...
Hey Georgie! Nope, you are not the only one. Just brilliant news :D
One of the happiest days, with a big smile Congratulations Jake, you deserve it.
Georgie, not the only one.
About the nominees, for me, a lot of surprises, some forgotten... maybe like all years, no know.
Congratulations Jake and Anne! I'm glad that their performances were noticed in LAOD despite the movie's lukewarm reception. I'm confident if LAOD got better reviews Anne and maybe Jake too would have shots at Oscar nods. :)
Congratulations to Jake, Michelle and Anne by the Golden Globe nominations.
I am so proud of them!
Congratulations to Jake, Michelle and Anne by the Golden Globe nominations.
Of course, congrats to Michelle and Ryan Gosling too. They'll also probably get Oscar nods, given the great reviews for Blue Valentine and the Weinstein company's push. Mr. Weistein is working hard to get them the Oscar nods. Usually he gets what he wants. :)
YAY!!!!! Jake and Anne nominated for GG's!!! :D
So excited for him and them!!
So happy for Ryan, Michelle, Natalie, James and Colin. All deserving noms!
I love Jake's response to the nom. :)
And lovely comments from Selma Blair.
Morning everyone! I hope Jake had a good time celebrating last night :D
Hi Karmentxu!
Morning JF! There's been so much good said about Jake and Anne's performances and they really are outstanding. I'm glad they've had this recognition.
Morning Monica :) I'm absolutely thrilled as well for my favourite director David Fincher! I loved Social Network - in my top five for the year.
Hey there Get Real! It's wonderful news for the King's Speech. I wish that would hurry up and open here... but I'm really pleased for them - it's good to see a British film do so well. This is all so exciting - I know awards are just the icing on the cake but it's a very nice treat now and again :D
Lots more stuff to post later! Good days. Have a good day everyone :)
I'm thrilled by the nominations, and even more so by the C. S. Lewis mentions in this blog. Reepacheep, the swashbuckling mouse in "Voyage of the Dawn Treader," is my favorite literary character. I saw that movie yesterday, and I'm still walking on air as if I had been to Heaven for two hours. :-) Then I come here and find that Jake has "Till we have faces" (also by C S Lewis). Last year, in "An Education," Peter Sarsgaard's character mentioned dropping in on lewis at Oxford. C. S. Lewis is being embraced by conservative Christians nowadays, but he should be enjoyed by pretty much anybody, as he was an excellent storyteller. You could enjoy his works on their own terms.
Face pet? Jake skips shaving for three days, and people get paranoid about the beard coming back? Hey, very few of us guys enjoy shaving. We don't do it unless we have to. :-)

Very much agreed, paul! Reep is such a wonderful character and the whole movie is a gem. :)
Have a good evening everybody!
Hi Paul! Growing up in Oxford, I just loved CS Lewis, and then now going to drink in the pubs that he and Yeats and other great poets used to meet in... well, I'm a big fab. Not so much of the movies, but definitely of the books.
Hey there Lady Ekster!
